Mayor Wee urges public to show love for Sarawak by participating in 722 Walk

Dato Wee Hong Seng KUCHING (July 20): Sarawakians are invited to show their love for the state by joining the 722 Walk next Tuesday, held in conjunction with this year's Sarawak Day celebration. Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said everyone can take part in the walk in the spriit of unity to show their pride and love for Sarawak. 'The 3km-walk is set to begin at MBKS Complex, passing through Jalan Padungan, the Kuching Waterfront and Darul Hana Bridge, before concluding at Dataran Ibu Pertiwiku,' he said during his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk'. Wee encouraged participants to wear the state colours of red, yellow and black, or dress in traditional or cultural attire to show their love for Sarawak. The 722 Walk is open to everyone, irrespective of their backgrounds and beliefs. The Mayor reminded all that Sarawak Day is not just a celebration, but a time to reflect on the journey that Sarawak has gone through and what Sarawakians should do for their state. The forthcoming event will feature light refreshments, a Zumba warm-up session and a flag-raising ceremony at Dataran Ibu Pertiwiku. Wee believed that the walk will strengthen Sarawakians' unity, celebrate their identity and show the world what it truly means to be a Sarawakian. It will mark the first time MBKS together with Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) jointly undertake the walk, with MBKS taking the lead this time. He said non-Sarawakians are also welcome to join the walk to show their support for what Sarawak is fighting for. 'I have come across some Chinese nationals who said that they choose Sarawak because it is a safe and politically stable place. 'They choose to send their children to the international schools here, allowing the young generation to pick up both English and Bahasa Malaysia as well as local dialects such as Hokkien,' he added. 722 Walk sarawak day Wee Hong Seng

Wee urges public to be an organ donor, save lives

Wee speaks during his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk' yesterday. KUCHING (July 20): Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng is encouraging the public to do their part in saving lives by signing up as organ donors. Noting that some people subscribe to blind faith, he said it is time for them to discard their superstition that when people die, their bodies should be intact. 'As one's life comes to an end, it does not necessarily mean that the organs cannot be better used to save lives. Think about those who are in need of organs and consider registering as an organ donor,' he told his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk' yesterday. Wee emphasised that organ donation is a noble charity that aligns with the spirit of helping others and saving lives. He said he had met personnel from the Sarawak General Hospital's Organ Donation Unit during a blood donation campaign recently, adding that the unit serves as a platform to encourage and appeal to more members of the public to sign up as organ donors. 'It will be beautiful and significant if people can save lives even after they pass away. Organ donation is a charity that should be promoted.' The Mayor said no one could physically take away anything with them when they die. Given this, he said it would mean a lot if they can give their consent to having their organs harvested for those who need them the most. lead organ donor save lives Wee Hong Seng

Mayor: MBKS assessing tree health near Pending school after recent incident

Dato Wee Hong Seng KUCHING (July 20): The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is conducting an assessment on the sustainability of the big trees near Chung Hua Middle School No.1 in Pending here in light of a recent fallen tree case. Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said they need to determine whether those big trees are still healthy or have withered with times, particularly on the root parts that are beneath the soil. 'We have discussed about the matter and requested the relevant authorities to do an assessment on the trees. This is a move to ensure that those big trees are good to stay,' he said during his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk' yesterday. Wee said the relevant authorities are also doing a wind velocity test in a bid to figure out why the tree had fallen. He said this is necessary since no one can predict the wind speed and they have to be sure the wind velocity is at a normal rate. According to him, three men were needed to remove the fallen tree, which had already been chopped into pieces. 'This goes to show how heavy the big tree is, but it was uprooted by the gust. We can only imagine how strong the wind was.' Given the current global climate change, the Mayor said the weather is becoming more unpredictable with strong winds and a high volume of rainfall, causing flash floods and other disasters. Despite this, Wee said this is not the time to give excuses but to focus on the necessary efforts to figure out the root cause of the problem. He also hoped that the community would not speculate on the reasons behind the fallen tree. 'No one wants to see any untoward incidents such as a fallen tree. Cutting down the trees may be our last resort, but for now, we will try our best to maintain them like trimming withered branches,' he said.

Kuching South Mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng, announced this during the handover ceremony of Magnum's RM45,000 sponsorship at the MBKS building here today. 'The contribution is not only financial, but also a gesture of trust, shared value, and commitment to the community that both MBKS and Magnum have held dearly,' said Wee, expressing his appreciation to Magnum for its continuous support spanning more than three decades. 'The long-lasting donation is the friendship that links together and builds up to make sure that as a whole, the community will benefit from this sponsorship,' he added. He further announced that this year's festival will feature 320 food stalls, three beer stalls, and one dedicated drink stall. Among the main highlights is the Chinese Home-Cooked Delicacy Corner, showcasing traditional dishes prepared by Chinese dialect groups in Sarawak – Hainan, Chawan, Teochew, Hokkien, Hing Hwa, Foochow, Kwong Wai Siew, and Hakka. They will each take turns to showcase and sell their traditional dishes over a dedicated three-day period, he noted. 'These are not the commercial recipes; these are dishes that represent the stories, the tradition, and family memories. 'So it is our way of preserving our culture through food and ensuring our younger generation understands and appreciates the richness of the root,' he pointed out. The festival will also feature a 'Gastronomy Pavilion', a special section reflecting Kuching's status as a Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy. Sister cities from Zhenjiang and Quanzhou, China, will also participate, sharing their culinary arts and culture with festival-goers. Additionally, there will be a 'Bumiputera Corner', a space where the Malay, Dayak, and other indigenous communities can proudly present their traditional delicacies. Wee encouraged the public from all over Sarawak to come and experience the delicious food, lively atmosphere, performances, and support local businesses. 'Do come, because your support matters. By visiting the stores, you are supporting all the small businesses, encouraging cultural continuity, and helping to keep this community spirit alive and thriving. 'The success of this festival is not just measured in numbers, but in all the smiles that we are creating in Kuching, the stories that we share and the memories that we create together,' he said. Also present was ENE Sdn Bhd vice president and East Malaysia regional head Liew Kee Chuan. Kuching Food Festival 2025 MBKS Wee Hong Seng
