How will the Dolphins deploy their new-look backfield in 2025?

How will the Dolphins deploy their new-look backfield in 2025? The Miami Dolphins are no strangers to running back committees throughout their history and they're turning the page to a new one in 2025 with De'Von Achane and Jaylen Wright leading the charge. In addition, there are two new runners in South Florida: veteran free agent Alexander Mattison and sixth-round rookie Ollie Gordon II. After three seasons, the Dolphins cut ties with Raheem Mostert earlier this offseason which clears the way for Wright to see a lot more field time, possibly as a bulk-carry runner. Achane, who claimed the top spot in the backfield last season, could be utilized a lot more as a receiver this season to build on last year's past catching success. More of Achane at receiver would open the door for the second-year Wright to be more of a factor in 2024. Achane caught 78 passes in 2024, and that number could have been much higher, if quarterback Tua Tagovailoa didn't miss significant time. In total last year, Achane averaged 4.5 receptions across the 2024 season, but in games Tagovailoa started, that mark was 6.1 catches. Achane will still see plenty of rushing attempts, but his prowess as a pass catcher could give the Dolphins and head coach Mike McDaniel several creative personal options with both he and Wright on the field at the same time. Wright finished his rookie season with 68 rushes for 249 yards, but judgement about the back should be withheld until he is given a substantial increase in work. While he averaged just 3.7 yards per attempt, Wright only had one game with more than 10 carries after Achane was forced to leave a Week 5 game with a concussion. Wright ran 13 times for 86 yards (6.6 yards per carry) in that win against the Patriots, showing signs he can handle a workload. With Achane and Wright as the one-two punch, don't discount Gordon getting in the mix for quality touches. The 2023 Doak Walker Award winner regressed in his final collegiate season at Oklahoma State. But in the pro ranks, he has the potential to be a lead-back of the future, although he'll start his career specializing in spot scenarios. Gordon could potentially help Miami improve on their short-yardage production. Behind the newly added Jonah Savaiinaea and James Daniels, Gordon could be a short-yardage back with the ability to be a pile-pusher while also adding viable receiving threat out of the backfield who recorded 80 receptions in college. Mattison, who spent five seasons in Minnesota and one in Las Vegas, rushed for an average of 31.3 yards in his 89 career games with 15 rushing touchdowns. He has also added 136 receptions for 1,012 yards and seven receiving touchdowns. Mattison will have to prove that he's more worthy of touches than Gordon, though. With fullback Alec Ingold also in the mix, there will likely be five players in the Dolphins' backfield. That versatile group should offer coaches plenty of scheme-diverse options this fall.

UFL 2025: Best mic'd up moments from Week 5

We're officially halfway through the 2025 UFL season, and Week 5 was full of memorable moments. Kicking off the week, the Memphis Showboats sunk the Birmingham Stallions in an overtime thriller on Friday night. Then, on Saturday, the St. Louis Battlehawks got a 32-27 victory over the Michigan Panthers. Rounding out the weekend, the DC Defenders got a four-point victory over the Arlington Renegades and the Houston Roughnecks trounced the San Antonio Brahmas, 27-3, in Sunday's action. [MORE: What is the UFL? Everything to know about the 2025 United Football League] And with that, here are the best mic'd up moments from Week 5. Quarterback Max Duggan gave the Battlehawks a 17-6 halftime lead when he sprinted and dove his way into the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown with 28 seconds remaining in the first half. After the scoring play, guard Steven Gonzalez lifted Duggan up in the air and informed the quarterback that he was a "mother f------ dog." Duggan, who finished with a 135.4 passer rating, rushed for a team-high 70 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Chris Rowland got the call on the run for the Defenders and took off for an 18-yard gain, which saw the Renegades defense struggle to bring him down. Following the chunk run, Rowland screamed "that's weight room." Outside of the 18-yard carry, Rowland totaled seven receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown, that being a 17-yard score with 11:44 remaining in the third quarter. Hakeem Butler had two receptions in the Battlehawks' Week 5 win: a 67-yard touchdown and a 57-yard touchdown, which each came in the fourth quarter. The 67-yard score saw Panthers cornerback D.J. Miller Jr. fall down and Duggan hit an open Butler downfield. After the play, while laughing, Duggan said the Battlehawks got "f------ lucky" because Miller "fell down." Defenders wide receiver Cornell Powell came down with a one-on-one ball against Renegades cornerback Steven Jones Jr. for a 37-yard touchdown, getting DC on the board for the first time with 13:44 remaining in the second quarter. After the big play, Powell said "he too little" in reference to Jones. Powell went on to finish with a game-high 89 receiving yards. Deontay Burnett reeled in a one-handed catch on a deep ball from quarterback Luis Perez and then maneuvered his way into the end zone for a 63-yard touchdown on their first play from scrimmage. During the play, Renegades head coach Bob Stoops couldn't believe what he was watching. Dee Anderson finished off the overtime win for Memphis by reeling in a tight, 5-yard touchdown pass from Dresser Winn — and the receiver proceeded to make a bunch of sounds that were difficult to decipher. Anderson finished the game with four receptions for a game-high 93 yards and one touchdown. Duggan took a shot after getting rid of the ball, and the St. Louis quarterback was shocked that he didn't get a flag thrown. Panthers quarterback Bryce Perkins threw a dime to wide receiver Malik Turner for a 20-yard touchdown with 2:53 remaining in the third quarter. He then repeated to Perkins, "told you I got you." While in a losing performance, Turner registered a game-high eight receptions. It was a good day for the Roughnecks, one perhaps highlighted by cornerback Rayshad Williams corralling a bobbled pass for an interception and running it back 68 yards for a touchdown. As the play unfolded, positive screaming could be heard from a member of Houston's coaching staff, who thought that Williams was taking the pick back to the house from the start. After muffing a punt, Michigan returner Xavier Malone got words of encouragement from head coach Mike Nolan. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Colorado NFL draft history: When was the last time a Buffaloes' player was picked? Show Caption Hide Caption Facts you didn't know about the NFL Draft The NFL Draft is fast approaching, so here are some facts about the big event. unbranded - Sport The 2025 NFL Draft is allowing the Colorado Buffaloes to reintroduce themselves. Just two years after Deion Sanders took over as the team's head coach, Colorado is putting itself back on the NFL draft map. It is an event typically owned by SEC giants like Alabama and Georgia, or the Big Ten elites like Ohio State and Michigan. Conference realignment and NIL deals have managed to completely uproot the sport, which now resembles the wild west. When Colorado goes to the Big 12 and is also coached by Sanders, NFL talent will certainly follow. That wasn't always the case in the friendly confines of Folsom Field, but it is now. Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders are the figureheads that represent Colorado's revival. Hunter figures to be a top-five pick and Sanders could easily land there too. At the very least, there will be some Buffaloes' influence on Sundays in the fall going forward. Here's a look the Colorado Buffaloes NFL draft history. Last Colorado player was drafted in the NFL Will Sherman, an offensive lineman, is the last player to be drafted into the NFL out of Colorado. He was selected by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2021 draft. Sherman has gone on to play just one game in his NFL career. He played six snaps on special teams in a Patriots' Week 5 win over the Houston Texans in 2021. He is currently a member of the Denver Broncos after spending time on the team's practice squad in 2024.
