Oklahoma Sooners linebacker makes Nagurski Award watch list
It's officially watch list season in college football as the 2025 season kicks off in late-August with Week Zero, and then Week One action takes place on Thursday through Monday of Labor Day weekend. The Oklahoma Sooners had another player make a preseason watch list for a postseason award on Tuesday. Linebacker Kip Lewis was one of 60 players named to the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is given annually to the best defensive player in college football. The only Oklahoma Sooners to win the award were Roy Williams in 2001 and Derrick Strait in 2003. Both did so under Brent Venables when he was the defensive coordinator at OU. Strait represents the last defensive back to win an award that's been dominated by linebackers and defensive linemen over the last 23 years. Lewis provided two of OU's best moments during the 2024 season. His pick six against Auburn gave Oklahoma a lead they wouldn't relinquish late in the fourth quarter, while his pick six against Alabama ultimately put the Crimson Tide into an unrecoverable tailspin that night in Norman. Lewis returns in 2025 as one of the veteran leaders of head coach Brent Venables' defense. He's started at linebacker since midway through the 2023 season alongside Danny Stutsman. Now with Stutsman off to the NFL, the Sooners are hoping Lewis can help fill his big shoes at Oklahoma. He's entering his fourth year at Oklahoma, as a member of the 2022 recruiting class, Venables' first at OU. Lewis figures to have a big say in how good the Sooners could be on defense this year. Venables and his staff will be counting on the veteran to provide more big moments this fall. Zach Ertz: I hope Terry McLaurin gets paid, and I know he will be ready for the season
Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin described himself as 'pretty frustrated' with the pace of his negotiations for a new contract, and said he hasn't decided if he will show up to training camp without a new contract. But Commanders tight end Zach Ertz believes McLaurin will be ready to go when the time comes. Ertz told Kay Adams that McLaurin will work hard to get himself ready to play in the Commanders' Week One game against the Giants whether he's doing it on his own or at training camp. 'I don't know the business of what's going on. I'm not privy to the conversations. But what is it? July 16? The first game is September 7. There's a lot of time between now and then to get something done,' Ertz said. 'Everyone knows Terry's working his butt off whether he's in the building or not in the building.' Ertz said he believes players should stay out of their teammates' business when it comes to contracts, but he hopes the Commanders give McLaurin the contract he's asking for. 'As a player that's gone through contract situations, public contract situations, I appreciated that my teammates weren't out there giving their opinions and everything like that,' Ertz said. 'So I'm not going to come out here and say one thing or the other. But what I do know is Terry's going to do everything he can to be at his best when his best is needed. Fortunately, his best is not needed tomorrow or early next week. It's needed toward the end of training camp, Week One. For me, I'm rooting for Terry. I hope he gets paid as much as he wants to get paid. But in terms of the business side of it, I'm going to stay far away from that.'

Reports: Trade interest in T.J. Watt may increase, Steelers intent on extension
The Steelers pulled off their third big trade of the offseason on Monday and some teams are reportedly interested to see if they'd like to make a third. Edge rusher T.J. Watt skipped all of the team's offseason work as he looks for a new contract and Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that multiple teams have had internal discussions about whether they can make a deal for the veteran. Schefter adds that there's a belief that interest from those teams is expected to increase in the wake of Monday's trade that brought cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. There's been no indication from the Steelers that they are looking to trade Watt and Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that they remain focused on signing him to a contract extension. A report this month said they expect to get a deal done before the start of the season. Watt signed his last extension days before Week One and the Steelers have a long-standing policy of not negotiating during the season. There was also word that the contract offer they had on the table for Watt was not what the edge rusher is looking for and teams are likely to be more aggressive about kicking the tires on a trade if that continues to be the case into training camp.
