HBO Max announces 'It: Welcome to Derry' series, release details

HBO's It: Welcome to Derry, the prequel series to the It films, is set for release in October, as confirmed by the streaming platform. The series, which serves as an origin story for Pennywise the Clown, is set 27 years before the events of the first It movie. The show brings back Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, alongside an ensemble cast including Taylour Paige, Chris Chalk, Jovan Adepo, and James Remar. Skarsgård also serves as an executive producer for the series, which is based on Stephen King's It universe. Produced by HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television, Welcome to Derry consists of nine episodes and is developed by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs. The series draws from the interludes in King's novel, exploring Pennywise's history of reappearing after every catastrophic event. Director Andy Muschietti shared that the show will be "told backward," with each season set in a different time period—season one in 1962, season two in 1935, and season three in 1908. The series will be featured at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, where fans can get an exclusive sneak peek. A new key art poster has been revealed, and event activities include Pennywise-inspired pedicabs and sweets in the Gaslamp Quarter. Additionally, Skarsgård shared insights into his return to the role, stating that he enjoyed revisiting Pennywise and teasing "cool stuff" fans haven't seen before. It: Welcome to Derry promises a darker, more intense version of Pennywise, with Skarsgård assuring fans that the horror is just as hardcore as in the films. The show will also delve into Pennywise's backstory, offering a deeper look into the character's sinister origins.

Ontario locations spotted in new teaser for HBO's ‘IT' prequel, ‘Welcome to Derry'

Pennywise is back and he's terrorizing a town that might look familiar to some in Ontario. HBO just dropped the new teaser for the series based on Stephen King's novel 'IT' novel, published in 1986. 'IT: Welcome to Derry' is a prequel to the 'IT' films, Warner Brothers said in a news release. The trailer shows a family that just moved to a quiet little town who will soon discover the horror that hides behind its peaceful façade. It also shows a group of children investigating the strange things happening in the town 'where it all began' according to a cut scene. The series is reportedly set in the '60s and will give fans a look into the origins of Pennywise. 'IT: Welcome to Derry' is scheduled to premiere on HBO by fall of 2025. IT:WelcometoDerry official teaser Filming for the 'IT' prequel began in 2023 in a number of locations in Canada including some spots in Toronto and Port Hope, according to reports by TV Guide. Some shots were also filmed in a school in Hamilton. Scenes from the new teaser released by HBO this week. Most of the filming was done in Toronto. The city's residential areas served as the stand in for the mysterious town of Derry. Scenes from the new teaser released by HBO this week showing a road in Port Hope. The teaser also shows some of the young characters biking in the middle of the road that viewers might recognize as the Ontario town of Port Hope. Actors in the film production of 'Welcome to Derry' run through some rehearsals on Walton Street in Port Hope. In April 2024, Downtown Port Hope seemed to have been transported back to the 60s when filming crews filled Walton Street with vintage cars. Some interior and exterior scenes were shot at private businesses in the area. Other scenes were also reportedly shot in some parts of Hamilton. Derry High School as shown in the teaser. In early 2024, the show's cast and crew were spotted filming some scenes in the former Delta Secondary School. The latter is the stand in for the local Derry high school in the show. 'Welcome to Derry' returned to Hamilton to film at the former Delta Secondary School after going into hiatus due to the strikes by Hollywood actors and writers last year. 'Fairview' is the show's false flag. The show is a prequel to 'IT,' the Stephen King horror tale.

‘It: Welcome to Derry' Teaser: Bill Skarsgård Is Back as Pennywise in Prequel Series

It's been a beat since Bill Skarsgård played Pennywise in both 'It' films (released in 2017 and 2019, respectively), but the 'Nosferatu' and 'The Crow' actor has wasted no time diving into the demonic terror of the Stephen King villain for prequel series 'It: Welcome to Derry.' The show is set in 1960s Derry, 27 years before Andy Muschietti's 2017 'It: Chapter One' film. Filmmakers Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti developed the drama series 'Welcome to Derry' for television along with Jason Fuchs; Andy Muschietti is directing multiple episodes of the series. More from IndieWire 'FUBAR' Season 2 Trailer: Arnold Schwarzenegger Is Dad of the Year to CIA Agent Daughter Monica Barbaro 'The Bear' Season 4 Trailer: Jeremy Allen White Scrambles More Than Just Eggs to Salvage His Flailing Formal Restaurant The elusive logline reads: 'Set in the world of Stephen King's 'It' universe, 'It: Welcome to Derry' is based on King's 'It' novel and expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films 'It' and 'It: Chapter Two.'' So what is 'Welcome to Derry' really about? It's safe to say that it could just be an origin story for Skarsgård's Pennywise with a new crop of kids to scare. The cast includes Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, and Rudy Mancuso. 'It: Welcome to Derry' is produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television. Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti produce through their Double Dream production company, along with Fuchs, Skarsgård, Brad Caleb Kane, David Coatsworth, Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin who executive produce. Fuchs and Kane serve as co-showrunners on the project; Fuchs wrote the teleplay for the first episode. Skarsgård previously told Collider that it was 'surreal' how big of a success the 'It' films were. 'It became this completely universal thing, outside of the thing. That's not me. I can't even relate myself to it anymore,' Skarsgård said when reprising the role for the sequel film. 'And now that I'm going back and doing it, it's such a bizarre thing. I don't think I'll ever really experience anything like it. It's this dualistic thing of me and the work and the character, and then the thing that it became, but it's fun.' He added that it was easy to slip into the alter ego of the clown, too. 'I was surprised how much of the character was just there already,' he said. 'I instantly could access him again, like it was yesterday that we wrapped the first one. It was just all there. So, the work and preparation and figuring out the character is almost intuitive, which is pretty cool. It's a very strange thing, but I'm trying to enjoy the ride, as much as I can.' 'It: Welcome to Derry' premieres this fall on HBO and HBO Max. Check out the teaser below.
