Japanese footballer in Australia arrested in betting scandal
SYDNEY (Kyodo) -- A Japanese footballer playing on an Australian A-League team has been arrested for alleged involvement in a betting scandal, Australian authorities said. Riku Danzaki, 25, a midfielder for Melbourne-based A-League club Western United, is suspected of deliberately receiving yellow cards during matches to manipulate betting outcomes, local media said. According to Victoria Police and local media, Danzaki has been charged with 10 offences committed across four matches between April and May. He was arrested last Friday alongside another man and has since been released on bail. The pair are due to appear in court on July 31. A native of Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Japan, Danzaki was a high school football star in Japan, winning a national championship with renowned talent factory Aomori Yamada High School. The midfielder made his professional debut in 2019 for Consadole Sapporo, playing in the J-League first division, before stints with clubs including J2 outfit JEF United Chiba and Scottish side Motherwell. Danzaki found his greatest success in Australian football's top division, the A-League, first while on loan to Brisbane Roar, and most recently with Western United, who he joined in 2023.

Premiership flop embroiled in football betting scandal after being hit with bombshell alleged corruption charge
The controversy has rocked the game in Australia and an ex Motherwell player as at the heart of it Former Motherwell player Riku Danzaki is at the centre of a betting scandal. The Japanese star, who is currently at Western United, has been charged as part of a probe into alleged gambling on A-League matches. The attacker has been hit with 10 offences relating to accusations of betting corruption in Australian top-flight games in April and May. It is claimed he received a red or yellow card in games to manipulate the outcome of online betting. He is one of two men who have been charged as a result of an investigation by detectives from the Sporting Integrity Intelligence United, who worked in conjunction with Football Australia. The pair have been bailed and are due to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 31st July. Western United confirmed one of its players has been charged. A club spokesperson said: 'The club is aware that one Western United player has been charged in relation to an alleged breach of sports betting guidelines. 'We take this matter seriously, condemn any actions that compromise the integrity of the game, and are cooperating fully with the investigation. 'Given the ongoing nature of the investigation, we cannot comment any further.' Football Australia confirmed its involvement. 'Football Australia takes the integrity of the game very seriously and has worked closely with Victoria Police and the Australian Professional Leagues throughout this investigation,' the governing body stated. Danzaki had a year at Motherwell but struggled to make an impression in the Premiership and moved to Western United in 2023. He played just four times in Claret and Amber following his move from Japanese side Sapporo.

Man steals Audi, Toyota in wild police chase in Melbourne southeast

A man has been arrested following a chase in which he stole and dumped multiple vehicles while trying to evade police in Melbourne's south east. Officers tracked a 29-year-old man, of no fixed address, as he drove a stolen Audi A1 sedan through the streets of Mount Waverley on Monday around 10am. The vehicle was followed by a police air wing helicopter as it led officers through the suburbs of Chadstone, Mount Waverley, Mulgrave and Malvern. Unable to shake his police tail in the stolen Audi, the man ditched the car before stealing a nearby Toyota RAV4 parked on George Street in Malvern East. The chase continued until the driver crashed into a fence on John St, fleeing on foot before being swiftly arrested on nearby Broadman St. After being interviewed by detectives the man was charged with two counts of motor vehicle theft, drug driving and weapons offences. He is due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Monday evening.
