Manitoba puts $1.65M into southwestern airport

Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard (left) is joined by officials at the Virden Regional Airport on May 26, 2025. (Manitoba Government/YouTube) The province is putting $1.65 million into an ongoing project to improve the airport in Virden. Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard was in the southwestern town on Monday to make the announcement. 'This is an important investment that will encourage regional development and job creation in Westman,' the minister said in a statement. The provincial dollars will go towards the expansion and rehabilitation of the Virden Regional Airport. The province said the funding will go towards a new automated weather observing system and improved support for medical transfer flights for services like STARS Air Ambulance. 'This is very important for our area,' Virden Mayor Tina Williams said, adding her town is becoming a health-care hub for the southwestern part of the province. Along with the health-care improvements, Williams said the new funding will help bolster tourism and business opportunities tied to the airport. The airport was built in 1940 as a flying school to train pilots during the Second World War. 'Since the RAF decommissioning in 1944, the airport has been kept active through the efforts of many area residents, private aviators, and especially the Virden Flying Club,' said Coun. Bruce Dunning, chair of the Virden Airport Commission. Dunning said the overall project was launched last year as the airport had become outdated over the decades. He said the ongoing project has seen the extension of the runway, installation of the weather observation system, and runway lighting. 'Once again our airport has become the centre for aviation activity in southwestern Manitoba,' he said. Dunning noted along with the provincial funding, the project has seen support from rural municipalities of Wallace-Woodworth and Pipestone, the Town of Virden, and the Virden Area Flying Club.

Gauteng climbing star ready to wow on world stage

Gauteng's rising star in sport climbing, 19-year-old Luke Westman, is set to make his mark on the world stage. A proud alumnus of Crawford International Lonehill, Westman has qualified for two prestigious International Federation of Sport Climbing World Cups in Bern, Switzerland, and Innsbruck, Austria, representing South Africa and IFSC Africa. 'It is a dream come true,' he said. 'It's an opportunity to showcase not only my dedication and training but also the growing talent and passion for sport climbing within our country. Ultimately, my goal is to perform to the best of my abilities, push my limits, and demonstrate the potential of South African sport climbing on the global stage. Knowing that I am representing my country will be a powerful motivator to strive for excellence in Bern and Innsbruck.' Westman will take to the walls in Bern, Switzerland, from June 13 to 15, followed by Innsbruck, Austria, from June 25 to 29, an event widely regarded as a highlight on the international climbing calendar. 'I'm ready to embrace the challenge, push my limits, and grow as an athlete among the best in the world.' In August 2024, Westman earned his Protea Youth Climbing Colours as part of the Youth World Championship Team that competed in China. Now stepping into the senior competitive scene, he's both excited and humbled by the opportunity. 'While there's some pressure, I feel incredibly privileged to represent my country on the world stage.' Westman, who began climbing at the age of nine, trains up to six days a week at CityROCK in Randburg and shares his expertise by coaching younger climbers at the climbing gym and Crawford International Lonehill Preparatory. Balancing training, coaching, and competitions, as a young athlete, Westman said he had to juggle his time. 'I've learned some strategies to keep things in sync. I manage my time by mapping out my training sessions, coaching commitments, competitions, and sufficient time for both mental and physical recovery. 'I also rely on my coaches, family, and friends for support and communicating my schedule and commitments helps them understand my priorities and to provide assistance when needed. 'My message to all the aspiring young climbers in South Africa who might see me as a role model would be to set yourself goals, whether it's sending a specific grade, learning a new technique, or competing at a certain level.' Gauteng climber set to represent SA in Europe

Luke Westman, a Fourways climber, has once again made Gauteng proud by qualifying to take part in two major International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) competitions this June in Europe. Westman was part of the Youth World Championship Team, who travelled to China in August 2024, where he obtained his Protea Youth Climbing Colours. 'After getting to compete at the Youth World Championships last year, I'm both nervous and excited to be able to compete in the Open IFSC World Cups. While there's some pressure, I feel incredibly privileged to represent my country on the world stage. 'Competing in Bern, Switzerland, from June 13 to 15, and Innsbruck, Austria, from June 25 to 29, is a dream come true. I'm ready to embrace the challenge, push my limits, and grow as an athlete among the best in the world.' The IFSC Innsbruck World Cup is arguably the most prestigious and favourite event for athletes to take part in. Westman, who also coaches younger climbers for local club, INSIDEedge Climbing, trains 5–6 days a week at CityROCK in Randburg, under the watchful guidance of head coach Devin Sender. 'I am very proud of Luke, who started his journey with me at the young age of 9, at Crawford Lonehill. His talent and hard work have paid off, making him one of the top climbers in our country. I am privileged to be his coach,' said Sender. These competitions do not come cheap, and athletes have the responsibility of funding their trips 100%, with the help of sponsors. Gauteng Climbing secretary Bridgette Erdey said: 'Luke is one of many Gauteng Climbing athletes who will be travelling overseas, representing the South African Climbing Federation and IFSC Africa this year. 'Families who fund these trips make huge sacrifices to make the dreams of these athletes come true, if it is even at all possible. As a province, we want to stand behind Luke and the rest of our athletes, and call on public and private entities to assist with funds to keep South Africa and Gauteng on the world stage. Get The Beauty Look: Gucci Westman's Naturally Sculpted Glow

Westman Atelier campaign Westman Atelier is the clean makeup and skincare brand founded by editorial makeup artist Gucci Westman, and since launching in 2018, the New York-based label has championed a skin-first approach with a minimalist aesthetic. For Westman, the pillars of modern beauty are luxury, efficacy, and clean, consciously-crafted ingredients, and she applies these principles to her product line that include blush sticks and duos, tinted highlight, suede matte lipsticks, and hyper-potent serums that give an oh-so-soft 'second skin' look. Westman Atelier campaign Loved for its clean ingredients and effortless finish, it's no surprise that the brand has earned a loyal following, from Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston to Anne Hathaway, and Reese Witherspoon, with whom Gucci has worked her magic for their red carpet moments. In this guide, Westman shares her three-step routine for achieving a naturally sculpted glow that's designed to enhance all your natural features. Westman Atelier campaign It's important to begin with prepping the skin as it's the base for everything you are applying on top. I like to start with our Skin Activator, which helps to make lines look softer, skin look lifted and pores appear smaller - it really is the perfect base for make-up to sit on. From here, if I'm looking for a natural look I'll use a dab of our Vital Skincare Concealer, for places where more coverage is needed, like under the eyes, over blemishes or redness. If I am after something more full coverage, like an evening or red carpet event, I like to go in with our Vital Skincare Foundation stick as it blurs and conceals any imperfections and photographs really well, whilst still maintaining a skin-like finish. To finish, a few swipes of Vital Pressed Skincare Powder - only where it's needed - it cuts T-zone shine and sets everything into place. Gucci Westman For sculpting there are two options - either a cream or powder contour. I love powder contour just as much as cream. Once you're feeling comfortable with your cream formula, like you've got it down, it can be fun to try a powder version. I like to place it around the cheekbones, bridge of the nose and eyelids to create depth and dimension to the face - it's all about playing with the natural shadows of your face. The trick is to add a little and build - especially with a cream formula, you almost can't go wrong - it's completely blendable and moveable. Another trick I like to use is setting the cream contour with the powder contour for a snatched and sculpted look that will last for hours. Westman Atelier campaign Adding blush breathes life into skin and really completes your base. Our new Baby Cheeks Powder Blush Duos include two different shades of blush, as I like having options and often use both shades together. Using two tones allows you to see the cheekbone in a new way and can really open up the face. Two colors are always more impactful than one in bringing dimension, and in some cases it can give an authenticity of tone that doesn't feel like makeup. I like to use the deeper shade around the hairline and the tops of the cheekbones, and blend the lighter shade into the apples of the cheeks - I've always found subtle contrast interesting.
