Number of trees planted across Glasgow since 2021 revealed

The local authority allocated £1.5 million as part of its budget in 2021/22 to the fund and a further £1.5 million during the 2022/23 period. So far, funding themes that area partnerships have supported include tree planting, improving access for walking and wheeling, providing benches and picnic tables, planting of bulbs, children's play and food growing. READ MORE: Date revealed for removal of historic George Square statues A report presented to members of the environment and liveable neighbourhood committee highlighted that 139 projects have been completed with 60 projects outstanding from the 2021/22 allocation. Meanwhile 66 projects have been completed and 76 remain outstanding from the 2022/23 fund. During the meeting, councillor Stephen Docherty said: 'I am concerned about the number of outstanding projects. 'I am interested in the funding items that area partnerships have got to look at for tree planting. Do we have food growing areas or do we have increased areas for food growing so that the capacity increases over time?' A council officer said: 'In terms of our total tree planting, we have figures of 16,000 trees planted across the city and that will be included as part of our tree planting updates that are taken to net zero later this calendar year. 'That is the full range of trees that include Whips planted on creation sites and it also includes semi-mature trees planted within the city centre. 'In relation to food growing plots, again across our different funding streams, we have got additional food growing plots being created over the last 12 months and those will be included in the food growing strategy reported again.'
