Multiple geese apparently run over, community member calls for action

WICHITA, Kan (KSNW) — Monday morning, Cylie Gillespie was one of a few to discover a 'disgusting' scene. Along McLean Street lay around half a dozen geese and goslings just feet from each other, and clearly, they had been run over. Roadkill on Wichita's streets is not uncommon. It was the way these geese were spaced along the street that caused Gillespie to pause her morning drive to work. 'Being that I've lived by the river for so long, you know I have seen geese hit, whether it's one or a couple. But what caught my eye was that there were so many of them and they were feet apart from each other,' Gillespie said. Stopping for geese is a fact of life for commutes in the city, and by extension, so is roadkill. But killing a goose, especially intentionally, can come with a hefty fine. Canada Geese, like those laying on McLean, are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty of 1918. Family of teen injured after pickup truck crashes into home speaks out 'Those birds are federally protected for a reason,' she said. The treaty's goal is to encourage a sustained population of all migratory bird species. For Gillespie, it also highlights a more local issue of speeding in the area. 'People might think this is a laughing matter, and nature doesn't matter and wildlife doesn't matter and it matters to people who care,' she said. 'Even at Riverside Park, people don't follow the speed limit, and there are children and other animals, and people choose to fly through here.' As for the geese killed along McLean, she hopes this comes as a wake-up call. 'Why can't we slow down? Why can't we find patience in life to do better as people?! Gillespie said. 'They were simply crossing the street, hoping people would stop for them and have some empathy and patience.' Gillespie says she would like stricter enforcement of speed limits and a wildlife crossing sign to go up in the area. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Firefighter mental health support group aims to break stigma

Editor's note: This story talks about suicide and may be triggering for some viewers/readers. WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – First responders can battle a sometimes-secret battle: their mental health. A study from the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology finds that approximately 20% of firefighters and paramedics meet the criteria for PTSD at some point in their careers. A lieutenant with Sedgwick County Fire is leading the charge on how firefighters take care of their mental health. 'Those calls pile up and you're not processing, you're not sleeping, you're not eating, the coping skills that you're using, typically in the first responder world, we're talking about drug use, prescription or illicit,' SCFD1 Lieutenant Jeremiah Christophersen said. That 'pile up' of situations is what Chistophersen wants people to know about. He wants to ensure a firefighter's mental health is as important as their physical health. He says he doesn't want anyone to reach the point he did years ago. 'I sat up in bed, I screamed, there's the grim reaper at the end of my bed multiple occasions,' he said. Christophersen says a divorce, financial strain and years of suppressed trauma from his career nearly cost him his life. 'Not telling anybody that I'm hurting, not telling anybody I'm scared. That wall kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger,' he said. Study reveals decline in mental health among US mothers In 2016, Christophersen says he attempted suicide. His inner voice stopped him. 'It kept burning through my mind the things that I was going to miss out,' he said while holding back tears. Christophersen says that moment changed everything for him. He wanted to channel his experience into making an impact. He now leads a peer support group in the Sedgwick County Fire Department. 'If they choose to, and they are having an issue that they would like to talk about, they can reach out to anyone on that team. If they go on a call, and anybody on that crew feels like, 'hey, this one was bad,' and would like to speak about it. They make that same thing,' he said. Christophersen says mental health resources and support have evolved significantly from when he went through his challenges, saying he is now trying to break the silence and stigma. 'They're starting to get comfortable with having conversations that they aren't normally having. We just need to continue and keep pushing that forward,' he said. Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. Whether it's for a family member, friend, coworker, or for yourself, there is help out there for anyone looking for mental health care. Who passed health checks in Wichita KS? Food trucks, zoo dining, brewery & more

Looking for a place to dine out, grocery shop or stay in the Wichita-area? You might consider visiting businesses that passed recent health inspections. Places that serve and sell food or offer lodging to the public are regularly inspected by the Kansas Department of Agriculture to make sure they're clean and safe. The rules they're expected to follow include things such as keeping bugs and mice out, handling food properly, avoiding old food, ensuring workers wash their hands, and keeping equipment and rooms in good repair so no one gets sick or hurt. Here are 56 businesses in Sedgwick County that passed their food safety or lodging inspections from May 18-24, according to the state. Many had few or no violations. Inspections happen routinely but also when someone files a complaint. Inspectors return to businesses that failed recent checks to make sure they've fixed any problems, so some places that appear on this list may have had trouble previously. The health checks occur at restaurants, stores, gas stations, hotels, motels, schools, concession stands, entertainment venues, bars, food trucks and other businesses and organizations that feed or rent rooms to the public. This list was compiled on May 28 using information available from the state on that date. It covers only Sedgwick County. How many Kansans will a semi of mac & cheese feed? Breaking down gift to food bank

How many people will 38,000 pounds of mac and cheese feed? Hungry Kansans are about to find out. The Kansas Food Bank in Wichita, which supplies 18 million pounds of food a year to agencies that help with hunger in 85 counties statewide, got a donation Thursday from Land O'Lakes for roughly 38,000 pounds of macaroni and cheese. It will start sending the food out Monday and Tuesday to food pantries and other organizations that support hunger. Kansas Food Bank President and CEO Brian Walker said the timing is perfect: School is out and more children are missing meals. There are food programs through schools, but not everyone will be able to make it to the school to get the food. 'It's really great because macaroni and cheese has made a comeback,' Walker said. 'If we go out to eat, I don't think there's a restaurant that doesn't have macaroni and cheese.' Land O'Lakes has made large donations in the past, he said, but an entire semi-trailer full of one item is always a significant donation. The pre-cooked mac and cheese can be boiled in the bag or popped in the microwave. Here is a breakdown of how much mac and cheese that is: 24 pallets full About 52 cases on each pallet (total of 1,260 cases) Each case has six 5-pound bags of macaroni and cheese Total weight: 37,800 pounds of macaroni and cheese That would be 81,067 servings of one cup (about 7.5 ounces each) The macaroni and cheese was provided through Land O'Lakes First Run. In a December 2024 post, the company said it donated 297,675 pounds of Land O'Lakes macaroni and cheese the past year and 7.3 million pounds of food since starting the program 14 years before. 'As a farmer-owned cooperative, Land O'Lakes, Inc is deeply committed to hunger relief. This effort begins locally in the communities that our members and employees call home, many of them rural.' Land O'Lakes Senior Vice President and General Counsel Sheilah Stewart said in the 2024 statement. 'We are honored to help our Feeding America food bank partners get fresh, nutritious food directly to the families who need it most.' About 14% of Kansans fall under the threshold as being food insecure, according to Feeding America. The Kansas Food Bank said it is 20% for children.
