Nate Wiggins garners respect from one of the NFL's sharpest minds

One of the NFL's brightest offers some high praise for Ravens star Nate Wiggins. Whether you're a fan of the Clemson Tigers or not, it's hard to imagine that there can be a ton of ways to make 25 seconds more exciting. Before every home game, the guys in orange and purple touch Howard's Rock for luck and run down the hill to begin play in Memorial Stadium a.k.a. 'Death Valley'. It's a scene that Baltimore Ravens star Nate Wiggins knows very well. Drafted by Baltimore as the 30th overall selection in Round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft, Wiggins came highly recommended. Three years at Clemson culminated in a First-team All-ACC mention to close the 2023 college football season. No one denies Wiggins' talent, but he has flown under the radar nationally. Fellow rookie cornerbacks stole the spotlight. Beanie Bishop Jr. of the rival Pittsburgh Steelers picked off four passes. Quinyon Mitchell earned PFWA All-Rookie Team honors, as did Mitchell's teammate, Cooper DeJean. The latter also intercepted Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl. Sometimes consistency can be ignored for flashier moments. That isn't to say the other guys mentioned weren't consistent. It's just intended to state that Wiggins was as well, and we don't mention him as often as we should. That can happen on a roster as loaded as Baltimore's. Think about it. He shares the secondary with an All-Pro (Kyle Hamilton) and the most exciting safety of the current rookie class (Malaki Starks). All were first-round draftees. All are worth getting excited about. Wiggins has gotten a lot of burn this offseason. He's been mentioned as a breakout candidate. Marc Ross made this claim three months ago. His colleague at Bucky Brooks, did so as the Ravens open training camp. His 2025 All-Breakout Team features the Ravens star as one of the two cornerbacks. "The feisty cover corner held his own on the island in a blitz-happy scheme that puts immense pressure on defensive backs to win their one-on-one matchups. Wiggins finished his rookie campaign with an interception, 13 passes defensed and a 47.8 percent completion rate allowed, per NGS. Most importantly, the ultra-competitive defender displayed the skill, confidence and grittiness to shadow WR1s with minimal help from deep defenders. As the Ravens look to take the next step as a title contender, they will need Wiggins and free-agent signee Jaire Alexander to flourish as lockdown defenders." Rounding out the rest of Brooks' secondary are fellow cornerbacks Terrion Arnold (Detroit Lions) and Tarheeb Hill (Los Angeles Chargers). Cole Bishop (Buffalo Bills) and Tykee Smith (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) are the safeties. Year two is a big one for Mr. Wiggins. Another season and the experience gained from his rookie campaign should fuel another successful run. He could step into the spotlight as one of the game's best and brightest, a title that we expect him to carry for a while.

Ravens defensive duo earns spotlight thanks to NFL evaluations

Two rising Ravens stars in the secondary earn national praise. Two defensive backs, each with their unique qualities, contribute to the improved Baltimore Ravens defense. Both received First-Team All-ACC honors, although they did so in different seasons. As they head into the 2025-26 NFL season, they are part of a steadily enhancing defense. Kyle Hamilton, a 2020 All-ACC nod, made a name for himself as part of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Nate Wiggins, a former Clemson Tigers standout, landed on the All-ACC team in 2023. Baltimore selected Hamilton 14th overall during the 2022 NFL Draft. Wiggins, the 30th selection in 2024, joined the secondary as an expected shutdown corner. Malaki Starks joins them. He's this year's 27th selection. Pro Bowler Marlon Humphrey is also in the mix. Completing the expected starting lineup is the newly acquired Jaire Alexander. The hype train is building as many see Baltimore's secondary as the best in the NFL. Wiggins is expected to make a big leap in year two after a respectable rookie campaign. That's been said more than once, most recently by Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic. He named Wiggins as the Ravens' breakout candidate for the coming NFL season. Jeremy Fowler also had high praise for Wiggins in his recent rankings "In 2023, he was the only safety with at least 10 tackles for loss and 10 pass deflections. He added three sacks and four interceptions, yet finished second behind Antoine Winfield Jr. in the top 10 ranking. This year, he was down significantly in each of those categories yet received more than 60% of the first-place votes. The reason is simple: His value transcends numbers." Fowler recently polled NFL executives, coaches, and scouts. Based on his findings, he crafted a ranking of the top ten safeties. Kyle Hamilton topped the list. An unnamed NFL executive offered the following: "Great player, scheme specific. In his role, he's very good. He can't man cover and does not have elite range, that's why teams with quicker receivers can have success against him." Hamilton is off to an electric start: A spot on the Pro Football Writers Association's All-Rookie Team, two Pro Bowl nods, First-Team All-Pro honors in 2023, and a Second-Team mention in 2024. Humphrey is already a Pro Bowler. Alexander was a Pro Bowler and Second-Team All-Pro in 2020 and 2022. Starks is solid. Wiggins is ready to take off. This Ravens secondary is going to be fun to watch moving forward.

Woike: Lakers are not interested in trading for Andrew Wiggins

There have been rumors over the last couple of weeks or so that the Los Angeles Lakers have been trying to trade for Miami Heat forward Andrew Wiggins. Wiggins is a two-way veteran wing who averaged 18.0 points a game and shot 37.4% from 3-point range this past season, and he arrived in Miami in February as part of the trade that sent Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors. Wiggins was a big key to the Warriors winning the 2022 NBA championship, and that year, he started in the All-Star game. Plenty see him as potentially the missing piece for a Lakers team that is looking to become a championship contender again. A recent report indicated that Miami's asking price has been too high for L.A. According to one Heat beat writer, Wiggins is expected to be a member of the Heat once the new season starts. Dan Woike, who covers the Lakers for The Athletic, said on "The Zach Lowe Show" that the Lakers simply aren't interested in Wiggins. "They're not interested in Andrew Wiggins," Woike said. "I think I can put that to bed." It could very well be that their interest in Wiggins had disappeared if Miami had been asking for too much in return. It is also possible this is a smokescreen. Los Angeles could possibly have other options as far as trading for a 3-and-D wing. Anthony Irwin wrote that the team called to inquire about the availability of Matisse Thybulle, a 6-foot-5 wing who has a seven-foot wingspan and a career average of 1.6 steals in 20.9 minutes a game.

Lakers target Andrew Wiggins expected to start season with Heat

The Los Angeles Lakers have been rumored to have interest in trading for Miami Heat forward Andrew Wiggins this summer. According to multiple reports, they have talked to the Heat about landing him, but apparently, the asking price has been too high for them. Wiggins could be the type of two-way wing who would elevate the Lakers into championship contention. He averaged 18.0 points a game and shot 37.4% from 3-point range this past season, and he was sent to the Heat by the Golden State Warriors in the February deal that shipped Jimmy Butler to Golden State. Perhaps Wiggins is simply out of reach for L.A. Anthony Chiang, who covers the Heat for the Miami Herald, posted on social media that Wiggins is expected to start the new season as a member of the Heat. Wiggins, 30, played a key role in the Warriors winning the NBA championship in 2022, and he was a starter in the All-Star game that year. He was the No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft out of the University of Kansas. He has two years left on his contract, and the final year of the contract is a player option for the 2026-27 season, which means he could fit into the Lakers' reported plan to load up on cap space in order to land a second superstar alongside Luka Doncic.
