Quonset Point home to world's only C-130J flight simulator

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Did you know that Rhode Island is home to an exclusive aircraft simulator that attracts pilots from around the world? The Weapons Systems Trainer-Reconfigurable, situated within the Quonset Point Air National Guard Base, provides intensive training for pilots learning to fly C-130Js, which are described as the military's most utilized transport aircrafts. 'We're really thankful to have the only C-130J electric simulator in the Air National Guard right here in Rhode Island,' said Col. Adam Wiggins, commander of the 143rd Airlift Wing. Wiggins told 12 News the flight simulator trains pilots how to navigate various weather and combat conditions. It also provides training for loadmasters on how to communicate effectively with the cockpit. Since it is the only flight simulator for this type of aircraft in the world, Wiggins said it is a popular training tool for pilots learning how to operate these specialized aircrafts. Wiggins couldn't show 12 News the flight simulator because the building it's in requires security clearance. But he said the one-of-a-kind training tool attracts pilots from around the country and the world. 'We recently trained the [Royal] New Zealand Airforce to receive their own C-130Js,' Wiggins said, adding that the Ocean State plays a key role in connecting the United States with its foreign military partners. The Rhode Island Air National Guard owns eight C-130Js, which Wiggins described as the 'pride and joys' of Quonset Point. Wiggins said the C-130J is versatile and utilized for a variety of missions. Those missions, he explained, include delivering 'cargo, passengers, equipment, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.' Staff Sgt. Samuel Miller showed 12 News around one of Quonset Point's C-130Js. Miller, who is a trained loadmaster, said his job is to keep tabs on the aircraft's inventory, which can range from supplies and food to weapons, ammunition and even combat vehicles. 'We are the authority in the back of the aircraft,' Miller explained. 'We must know exactly what is coming on the plane.' Andrew Wiggins' Cryptic Post Has Fans Worried

Andrew Wiggins' Cryptic Post Has Fans Worried originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Andrew Wiggins balled out for the Miami Heat in his 17 appearances for his new team following his mid-season trade from the Golden State Warriors. Advertisement The former All-Star headed to South Beach as part of the Jimmy Butler deal, and while Wiggins' arrival did not exactly make the Heat instant championship contenders, there's no denying that he showed a lot of potential in Erik Spoelstra's system. Wiggins averaged 19.0 points on 45.8% shooting, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.2 steals, 1.0 blocks and 2.1 triples in 32.1 minutes per game. The Heat, however, went 6-11 during this stretch. Wiggins was able to help Miami secure the No. 8 seed in the East, but they ultimately got swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round. Miami Heat small forward Andrew Wiggins. Mandatory Credit: Sam Navarro-Imagn Images Wiggins recently grabbed the attention of fans on social media because of a rather cryptic Instagram post. The Heat forward posted an all-black photo on his Instagram stories, which was accompanied by an excerpt from EBK Jaaybo's song entitled "Felt That In My Soul." Advertisement "Been feeling pain since you left, I felt that in my soul spiritually. Walking this earth without you here just feels so weird to me," the lyrics of the song said. While there is really no way to tell what exactly Wiggins was trying to convey with his post here, more than a few fans could not help but feel worried for the 30-year-old. "Someone needa check up on Wiggins man," the caption of an X post read. "Much love pray all is well @22wiggins ❤️" a comment said. "🙏🏾😫" reacted a user. "He's been a lemon for us but hopefully he's alright mentally," said another. Advertisement "Damn 💔" a supporter wrote. "Watching your father pass on slowly over the course of 2 years has to alter your brain. No other way around it," declared a fan. As that last comment indicated, some users assumed that Wiggins' post was connected to the death of his father, Mitchell Wiggins, in September 2024. His passing followed an extended period of declining health, which forced Andrew Wiggins to take multiple leaves of absence from the Warriors to be with his family. Britain's Bradley Wiggins opens up about cocaine addiction

– Former Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins said he became addicted to cocaine after his cycling career and was 'lucky to be here' after getting sober a year ago. Wiggins, who retired from the sport in 2016, became the first Briton to win the Tour de France in 2012 and collected a then-British-record eight Olympic medals, including gold in the time trial at the 2012 London Games. In an interview with the Observer published on May 13, the 45-year-old spoke about how his drug use had affected his family. 'There were times my son thought I was going to be found dead in the morning. I was a functioning addict. People wouldn't realise. I was high most of the time for many years,' Wiggins said. 'I had a really bad problem. My kids were going to put me in rehab. I was walking a tightrope. I realised I had a huge problem. 'I had to stop. I'm lucky to be here. I was a victim of all my own choices for many years.' Wiggins also revealed that former cycling champion Lance Armstrong, who was involved in a doping scandal that led to him being stripped of his record seven Tour de France titles, had been helping him, adding: 'My son speaks to Lance a lot. 'He'd ask my son, 'How's your dad?' and Ben would say, 'I've not heard from him for a couple of weeks, I know he's living in a hotel'. They wouldn't hear from me for days on end. I can talk about these things candidly now.' In December last year, Wiggins said Armstrong had offered to fund his therapy for mental health issues. Meanwhile, British cycling great Chris Hoy said on May 13 he had entered 'a bit of a stability stage' in his cancer treatment and is appreciating life 'more than ever'. The six-time Olympic champion revealed in February 2024 he was undergoing treatment, including chemotherapy, and said in October his diagnosis was terminal, with doctors telling him he had between two to four years to live. 'I'm doing well,' the 49-year-old Scot told Sky Sports News. 'It feels like I've entered a bit of a stability stage at the moment and I'm feeling good, exercising, riding a bike, busy. 'Most importantly, cancer's not the first thing I think about in the morning when I wake up and it's not the last thing I think about when I go to bed at night.' Hoy, whose wife Sarra has an aggressive form of multiple sclerosis, added: 'I think we've got into a rhythm now where it's part of our lives and we manage that and crack on. 'It feels like it's been one of the busiest periods of my life, the last few months, just doing everything: fun stuff, family stuff, work, travel. 'I feel good. I'm on constant medications, constant treatment, but it's not interfering too much with my life and the most important thing is it's working, so I'm stable at the moment, everything's good. Making hay while the sun shines.' Hoy also won 11 world championship gold medals before he retired from competitive racing in 2013. He was at the vanguard of Britain's era of domination in track cycling, winning gold medals at the Athens, Beijing and London Olympics. Until 2021, Hoy was the most successful British Olympian and the most successful Olympic cyclist of all time before being overtaken by fellow Briton Jason Kenny who claimed his seventh Olympic gold at the Tokyo Games. 'I can't believe the position I'm in now compared to 18 months ago. I never imagined I'd be able to get to this point where I'm actually living life,' said Hoy. 'And not just living life, but actually appreciating it more than ever and able to enjoy the little things. It's not just about doing bucket-list stuff and doing massive things, it's about appreciating the daily, mundane fun of life.'
