Will Ferrell ‘excited' to bring Eurovision musical to Broadway
Will Ferrell has said he is 'excited' to bring a musical version of the Eurovision Song Contest to Broadway. The American actor, 57, is basing the project on his Netflix movie, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga, which he starred in opposite Canadian actress Rachel McAdams and British actor Dan Stevens. 'The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.' Music will come from Savan Kotecha, who was behind the songs for the Netflix movie, and will be directed by Alex Timbers. 'Our aim always is to bring the joy of the Eurovision Song Contest to more people globally – especially as we approach our 70th edition in 2026.' Last month, the 2025 winner of Eurovision was crowned as 24-year-old opera singer JJ from Austria, who entered with the dramatic Wasted Love. Advertisement The UK came 19th in May after Remember Monday earned 88 points from the national juries for their song What The Hell Just Happened? and no points from the audience. Netflix has previously turned its popular science fiction show Stranger Things into a play in the West End called Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which serves as a prequel to the series.

Will Ferrell confirms musical based on Eurovision movie comedy 'in development'
Will Ferrell has confirmed that his hit Netflix comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga is set to be turned into a musical on Broadway. The actor and comedian, 57, is a long-time fan of the Eurovision Song Contest which saw him writing and starring in the 2020 musical romantic-comedy opposite Rachel McAdams. Set in the small Icelandic town of Húsavík, it follows longtime friends Lars Erickssong (Ferrell) and Sigrit Ericksdóttir (McAdams), who form the band Fire Saga, with Lars dreaming of winning the Eurovision Song Contest. When opportunity finally comes knocking, Sigrit - who has long harboured feelings for Lars - reluctantly agrees, but other distractions at the competition soon threaten to come between them. Ferrell will now help pen the book for an upcoming stage adaptation alongside Harper Steele and Anthony King, with Alex Timbers serving as director. The original flick included memorable songs such as Jaja Ding Dong and Lion of Love and Húsavík (My Hometown) - which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song in 2020. Music writer and producer Savan Kotecha - who worked on the film with the likes of Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, One Direction and Katy Perry - will write the music. Speaking about his latest project, Ferrell said: 'We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway. 'The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.' Timbers added: 'Will Ferrell and Harper Steele are my comedy heroes and when I first saw their joyful movie 'Eurovision' during the pandemic, it buoyed spirits during a very dark time. With this stage adaptation, I can't wait to bring that same mix of heart, spectacle, irreverence, and awe to audiences across the world.' They even have the backing of the actual Eurovision Song Contest - which celebrates its 70th edition next year - with Martin Green CBE, the contest's director, saying: 'This is a stellar team for what I am sure will be an equally stellar adaption of a film the world loved. Our aim always is to bring the joy of the Eurovision Song Contest to more people globally - especially as we approach our 70th edition in 2026.' The film featured a number of previous Eurovision contestants, including two-time Swedish winner Loreen and 2014 Austria winner Conchita Wurst. UK Eurovision commentator Graham Norton also made a cameo appearance. The big question is will Jedward - who have represented Ireland twice and previously told The Standard that they turned down the chance to appear in the film - finally join the party on stage?

The beloved film stars Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as aspiring Icelandic pop stars who finally get their big break through the famed Eurovision Song Contest. Ferrell is writing the book for the show with Harper Steele, co-writer of the film, and Anthony King, the author of the musical production of Beetlejuice. "We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway," Ferrell said in a statement Wednesday. "The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition." Savan Kotecha, an executive music producer on the film, is penning the music for the stage show and Alex Timbers -- whose credits include Moulin Rouge and Just in Time -- is directing the project.

The 56-year-old actor and comedian, best known for his roles in 'Elf' and 'Anchorman', is co-writing the Broadway script for the musical with Harper Steele and Anthony King. Will was quoted in Variety saying: 'We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway. The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.' The original film starred Will and Rachel McAdams as aspiring Icelandic musicians Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdottir, who dream of representing their country at the Eurovision Song Contest. It featured original songs such as 'Ja Ja Ding Dong', 'Lion of Love', and the Oscar-nominated ballad 'Husavik'. The new stage version is being developed with music by Savan Kotecha, and will be directed by 45-year-old Alex Timbers, whose previous Broadway credits include 'Moulin Rouge! The Musical', 'Beetlejuice', 'Here Lies Love' and 'Gutenberg! The Musical!'. Alex said: 'Will Ferrell and Harper Steele are my comedy heroes. No cast or production dates have yet been confirmed by producers. Will previously made his Broadway debut in 2009 with the one-man show 'You're Welcome America: A Final Night With George W. Bush'. He also co-wrote 'Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga' alongside Andrew Steele. The new project has the backing of the real Eurovision Song Contest.
