Opening of Gordie Howe International Bridge could be delayed, report says
Two weeks ago, the Gordie Howe International Bridge reached a major milestone as the tower cranes that helped build the bridge were removed, signaling that construction is almost over. However, a report from the financial and analytics company S&P Global suggests that the opening of the bridge could be delayed as much as six months. The report indicates construction delays at both the Canadian and U.S. ports of entry facilities could postpone the bridge opening. According to the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, work on the bridge is progressing toward its projected completion of fall 2025, with only 2% of construction work remaining. Chief Relations Officer Heather Grondin provided a statement, saying in part, "As with any major construction project, at this stage, it is too early to offer a specific opening date for the Gordie Howe International Bridge." CBS News Detroit reached out to the Canada Border Services Agency and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. CBSA provided the following emailed statement: "Handover of the buildings started in early 2025 with the CBSA receiving access to the facility to start its installation of equipment. CBSA employees have begun to occupy the port of entry buildings. The CBSA will be ready to provide services at the Canadian port of entry by the opening date." U.S. Customs and Border Protection deferred our inquiries to the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority. Meanwhile, similar work is happening at the 11 Canadian port of entry structures. The S&P report also noted there are delays at the Michigan Interchange, which connects the bridge to Interstate 75 in Detroit. Grondin says painting and signage installations are underway, which are part of the final steps to connect I-75 to the U.S. port of entry line.

Decrease in overall tunnel traffic due to ongoing tariff dispute
Politics and tariffs have slowed traffic through the Windsor-Detroit tunnel. According to the tunnel corporation, the Windsor-Detroit crossing has been the least affected in Canada, with a drop of 5 per cent in traffic volume. Over 10,000 daily commuters still cross to clock in at Henry Ford Hospital, DMC, or the Detroit three automakers. There are still a lot of economic and social ties between the two communities as well. 'The weekend travel, certainly the discretionary travel is down considerably. Obviously, there's, you know, an elbow up campaign to try and keep our money here. And we understand that. And that's just something that we're going through right now. And I'm sure the folks in Ottawa and Washington will sort that out soon,' said Tunnel CEO Tal Czudner.

Windsor-Detroit trade needs enhanced security: Pupatello speaks out
Senator Sandra Pupatello is raising alarm bells when it comes to gaps in Canada's security, specifically concerning the protection of waterways in Essex County and the Windsor-Detroit trade corridor. At Wednesday's Senate Finance Committee meeting, Pupatello was able to make remarks directed at both the Ministry of Public Safety and the Ministry of Defense, both of which are seeking increased spending to enhance security and trade protections. Pupatello told AM800's The Shift with Patty Handysides that she believes the money should be invested in the Windsor-Essex region. 'I'm concerned that we have a much better focus on the epicentre, especially considering the tariffs we're facing because our American friends are insisting that they see an enhanced environment for guns, for drugs, protecting our citizenry, this is the time for an investment right here,' said Pupatello. Pupatello says she feels there's a lack of coordination between agencies through the Windsor-Detroit corridor. 'It is the epicentre of trade for North America. We have 25 per cent of Canada's trade with America going right through Windsor-Detroit, and if you were to understand how many agencies are involved, and yet, there is zero coordination amongst them to guarantee that we have 24/7 coverage, some of the details I think are pretty shocking,' she said. Pupatello is calling for at minimum, enhanced electronic surveillance. 'I see a capital spend coming down the road, where is that going to go? I think this should be the epicentre of those kinds of investments. If we get it right in Windsor-Detroit, the most prominent trade corridor in the continent, we're going to get it right everywhere else,' Pupatello said. She added she is committed to closely monitor the plans that the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Public Safety will develop, particularly their request of billions in additional funding. — Duston Coffman/AM800 News
