Marriott's Net-Zero Hotel Breaks Ground, But Green Tax Breaks Are Going Away
With federal clean energy incentives on the chopping block, hotels operating in the U.S. may need to rethink how realistic their net-zero goals really are. Marriott has broken ground on the first fully electric, net-zero emissions hotel under its brand, a 115-room property in Winooski, Vermont. The Sugar House Hotel is scheduled to open in 2026 and will rely entirely on electricity, drawing from rooftop solar panels and local renewable energy sources. 'There are no fossil fuels in the building at all,' said Doug Nedde, of Nedde Real Estate, the owner of the hotel and its main investor. 'This hotel will rely entirely on electric energy and incorporate the most advanced geothermal systems we've ever used.' Marriot has a goal to cut its emissions to nearly zero by 2050. Amenities will include a rooftop bar, event space, and a general store featuring Vermont made products, with rooms themed around traditional sugar houses from the area. Nedde said the focus isn't just about the environment – he also w

Housing and healthcare connection highlighted in Winooski
WINOOSKI, Vt (ABC22/FOX44) – UVM health network and Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity are teaming up to show the connection between housing and healthcare in Vermont communities. A soon-to-be-completed three family home on Hall st. in Winooski will help house Vermont's most vulnerable, and it's all thanks to a partnership between the two groups. 'Housing is a key aspect of our patient wellness,' says Maureen Leahy, volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and director of network department psychiatry at UVM Medical Center. She says patients who have secure housing have a significantly better ability to manage wellness and handle illness. 'Our contribution to housing in our local communities is a direct contribution to our patients wellness,' says Leahy. Once complete, volunteer manager Caitlyn Conibear says the energy efficient units will house three partner families. 'They'll get to come in, see what it takes to build a home, and then live in a new, healthy home,' Conibear explains. The project is slated to wrap up by mid-June. Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity will host more of what they've dubbed 'Wellness Builds' throughout the summer and into the fall – and they're inviting health network employees to join them in getting their hands dirty. 'We've had these homes and we'd love to put Vermont families in them who need a nice, healthy home.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Winooski business owners voice concerns over Main Street construction
WINOOSKI Vt. (ABC22 FOX44) – With road construction set to resume on The Main Street Revitalization Project in a few days, business owners were once again voicing concerns over the construction. A group of roughly twenty at a public forum delved into an at times heated discussion over signs, detours, parking and notifications from the city— small changes they say could make a big difference for their storefronts. 'We're trying to provide very reliable utilities to these businesses, especially ones that are investing in the city, so our goal is to be as least disruptive as possible and try to substantially complete the project this year,' said Jonathan Rauscher, Winooski's Director of Public Works. Rauscher says road construction will likely look similar to last year, but acknowledges the city needs to do more. 'I'm very aware that we need to have new services, and I don't object to that, but the planning and execution has been flawed,' said Glenn Patterson, who owns Junior's Winooski. He says his restaurant, which saw business dip by 25%, struggled to make ends meet. 'While they're making an effort, which is appreciated, the response is pretty much we're just going to do what we did last year and your inconvenience is not our problem,' Patterson said. Joe Sinagra, a Winooski property owner, who led much of the discussion on behalf of business owners, says he is hopeful after leaving the discussion. But last spring Sinagra had tenants leave and a business close in some of his buildings. 'I'm optimistic, but I heard today that businesses are going to be diligent about it… because these frustrations aren't that they're going to have to lay people off, they're frustration is that they're going to close their business if something doesn't change.' Construction is set to begin again at the end of the month. City officials also say they are planning to launch a marketing campaign in April to promote local businesses.
