Job scams a key issue under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair in 2025, has pledged to take decisive action against transnational job scam syndicates, placing the issue at the forefront of its regional agenda. Malaysia's Foreign Ministry, Wisma Putra, in a statement on Friday said it takes the issue of job scam syndicates seriously. The ministry expressed its sincere appreciation to the Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) as well as other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and members of the media, for their continued efforts in drawing attention to the plight of Malaysians who have fallen victim to job scam syndicates across the region. 'Malaysia remains fully committed to working closely with ASEAN counterparts and all relevant stakeholders, including civil society, to strengthen preventive measures, enhance regional collaboration, and ensure protection for all victims,' added the statement. The Foreign Ministry said it has taken concrete steps to raise the matter with fellow ASEAN Member States, including at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat in Langkawi in January and the 29th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit earlier this week. At the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat held in Langkawi in January, ministers reaffirmed their joint commitment to addressing transnational crimes, including people smuggling, trafficking in persons, drug trafficking, cybercrime, money laundering, and the rising threat of online scams. During the 29th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting, held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit, Malaysia stressed the urgent need for decisive regional action in tackling cross-border crimes. As a result, ASEAN ministers agreed to review the ASEAN Plan of Action to Combat Transnational Crime (2016-2025) to strengthen regional coordination and ensure that its successor documents address emerging and evolving criminal threats. In the 46th ASEAN Summit, ASEAN leaders also expressed strong determination to intensify cooperation under the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC), with an emphasis on law enforcement collaboration to combat online scams and trafficking in persons.

Anwar attends Shangri-La Dialogue, strengthens regional security talks

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will undertake a working visit to the Republic of Singapore tomorrow (May 31) to attend the 22nd International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue 2025. The annual forum is regarded as a premier platform for global and regional leaders to engage in high-level discussions on pressing security and defence matters. In a statement, Wisma Putra said Anwar's participation — under Malaysia's current role as Asean chair — reflected international recognition of the country's leadership in promoting peace and security across the region. During the visit, Anwar is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Singapore's Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong. The two leaders are expected to review the state of bilateral relations and exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest. Anwar will also pay a courtesy call on Singapore's President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. "Malaysia and Singapore, as close neighbours and key Asean partners, share a robust and multi-faceted relationship across a wide range of sectors. This year also marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries," said Wisma Putra. In 2024, Singapore was Malaysia's second-largest trading partner globally and the largest within ASEAN. Bilateral trade grew by 8.9 per cent to RM396.22 billion (USD86.69 billion), comprising RM230.86 billion (USD50.53 billion) in exports to Singapore and RM143.73 billion (USD31.45 billion) in imports.

ASEAN adopts KL Declaration, reaffirms centrality and long-term goals

By HIDAYATH HISHAM ASEAN member states have adopted the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of the ASEAN Community, renewing their collective commitment to deepen integration and advance the region's shared future. The Foreign Affairs Ministry (Wisma Putra) said the declaration was endorsed during the 46th ASEAN Summit on May 26, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur. 'We pledge to continue working together in the maintenance and promotion of peace, security, and stability, as well as further development and growth in the region, to ensure that the ASEAN Community continues to thrive and remains adaptive and responsive to the impacts and inherent opportunities of existing and future megatrends,' it said in a statement. The declaration outlines nine key commitments, including the strengthening of ASEAN centrality, enhanced cooperation with external partners, deeper economic integration, and improved coordination across sectors and pillars. Wisma Putra also highlighted the need for a forward-looking agenda to respond to rapid change, including challenges related to climate, technology, and evolving power dynamics. 'We reaffirm our commitment to the ASEAN Community's next phase through ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future, which is people-centred, sustainable, dynamic, and resilient, with an inclusive, rules-based, and economically vibrant framework,' it said. Member states agreed to integrate the experiences of ASEAN 2025 into future plans, and to build a more cohesive regional identity with inclusive and equitable development.
