Scottish blueberry breakthrough sounds a lot better than Willy Wonka's chewing gum
Did you know with a Digital Subscription to The Scotsman, you can get unlimited access to the website including our premium content, as well as benefiting from fewer ads, loyalty rewards and much more. On being told Wonka has invented chewing gum that tastes like a three-course meal – tomato soup, roast beef with baked potato, then blueberry pie and ice cream – she ignores warnings it's not ready for human consumption and starts chewing anyway. The result is that she turns blue, expands to become a giant blueberry, and is rolled off to have the juice extracted before she explodes. However, we're quite sure the invention of a new kind of blueberry by experts at the James Hutton Institute will come with no such (entirely fictional) risks. Instead, the ten years of research that went into the creation of the Highland Charm – the first capable of flourishing in Scotland's climate – should mean that, in about three years' time, we'll be able to have in-season, local fruit that's tastier and healthier than imports which can take weeks to reach supermarket shelves after being picked.

Bake Off stars tackle most 'demanding' challenge yet as competition airs on TV tonight
Bake Off: The Professionals continues on Channel 4 tonight with chefs putting their careers on the line, while Helen, Jules and JB head to Pembrokeshire in their new Channel 5 show Bake Off: The Professionals continues on our screens tonight - and the chefs are set to take on the most demanding challenge yet. In tonight's (Tuesday 22 July) episode of the Channel 4 show, the semi-final gets under way as they compete in the Bake Off spin-off. Not only is the nation watching as their souffles sink, but if Cherish and Benoit belittle their Bakewell tarts they know their bosses will be taking notes at home too… With their reputations on the line, four teams of pastry pros nervously approach the semi-final. Tonight's challenges are chocolate-themed, and there will be extra scrutiny from guest judge Gabriella Cugno, who worked as the official chocolatier on the blockbuster film Wonka. Gabriella knows exactly how to make delicious choccies look magical, and that's what will be required from the teams tonight. First up, they must craft two different types of chocolate bar from scratch, and with no recipe to follow they are free to unleash their imaginations. Fun as it sounds, it's quite the test for these bakers, who usually deal in cake rather than confectionery. Then it's onto one of the most demanding showpiece challenges in the show's history – 'Floating Cities'. The judges require the teams to create an edible, ornate, sturdy vessel, that will float on water carrying 24 immaculate petit fours. Of course, the wondrous treats will need to taste spectacular too, and each dessert must be identical to its neighbour. It's a tantalising prospect, and the results are sure to be stunning – but not everyone will make it through to next week's final. Imagine spending hours labouring on a sugary boat of dreams, only to be sent home… Bake Off: The Professionals airs tonight at 8pm on Channel 4. Coastal Adventures with Helen, Jules and JB We've heard of whale watching, but tonight Jules Hudson is on the Pembrokeshire coast, trying to photograph porpoises. He's taking part in a major conservation project run by Sea Trust Wales to protect the creatures, who prove quite difficult to spot. Jules has definitely got the plum job this week, while poor Helen is thrown into cold waters, going surfing in Tynemouth. It turns out the North East is becoming quite the hotspot for the sport, and the quay is also home to wonderful fishing traditions, which she enjoys before tucking into a stunning seafood lunch – not such a short straw after all. Later, JB reveals that Norfolk's finest export, Colman's mustard, owes its flavour to the sea air (who knew?), before setting sail from Burnham Overy Staithe. He hopes to emulate Nelson, but even with local skipper Ash giving him the best tuition, JB isn't exactly a natural on the water… Coastal Adventures with Helen, Jules & JB airs tonight at 8pm on Channel 5. Mix Tape It's finally time for Alison and Daniel to meet up in Sydney, as they bite the bullet and meet for dinner. The electricity is still there between them, but when he broaches the subject of why she did a runner all those years ago, Alison clams up and asks for the bill. Daniel is left confused and frustrated. At the same time his marriage is dealt another blow as Kat reacts badly to his revelation that he's in Australia for work. Who does Dan really want to be with – and do either of the loves of his life want to be with him anymore? As Alison deals with seeing Dan again – and her manager begs her to travel to England for publicity – she considers whether it's time to tell him what really happened in Sheffield. Meanwhile, flashbacks give us a glimpse of the turmoil Alison was facing at home in 1989. Mix Tape airs tonight at 9pm on BBC Two. Emmerdale Robert and Kim are all set for a secret meeting to hand over Annie's Field, but Robert senses something isn't quite right. He backs out of the deal, leaving Kim exasperated. Liam insists he can't break patient confidentiality and the pair come to blows. Later, John feels guilty after a conversation with Liam, and messages the helpline again. David Corenswet hails Superman director James Gunn
James Gunn created a "familial feeling" on the set of the new Superman movie. David Corenswet plays Superman in the superhero film, and the 32-year-old actor has revealed that he relished the experience of watching the movie for the first time with the cast and crew at the premiere in Los Angeles. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, David shared: "Usually I watch a movie early. If I'm nervous, I want to get my self-conscious viewing out of the way early. But when I started seeing the trailers, I kind of got the feeling of what it might be to watch the movie as an audience member, and there was this ... uplifting energy and feeling of inspiration. "It feels like the movies that I grew up watching and loved, so I wanted to preserve the experience. "It was a great audience for it. Big crowd and the cast and some of our crew and loved ones ... so it was just a very positive and supportive audience." David - who stars in the film alongside the likes of Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult and Isabela Merced - then praised the director for creating a supportive attitude on set. The actor explained: "James Gunn does that deliberately. He really makes a familial feeling ... He loves what he does." David actually watched the movie for a second time at a cinema in Philadelphia. He shared: "That was the first viewing and there was some self-consciousness, so I needed to go back. So I snuck into the back of an IMAX screening outside of Philly with a couple of friends. "It was great. It was better the second time." Earlier this year, James claimed that "people are looking for heroes right now". The filmmaker also revealed that he was feeling optimistic about the new Superman film. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at a DC press event, he explained: "I think he's the right Superman because he is a character that stands for something that is solid, stands for basic human morals, basic human integrity, basic belief in protecting others and protecting the weak being good to people and being honest. "People are looking for heroes right now. They are looking for values of goodness, looking for people who are good and decent human beings. And Superman is that." James also revealed that Warner Bros planned to throw its full weight behind the promotional campaign for the film. The director said: "DZ [David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery] loves what we're doing, loves the movie, and has really rallied the entire company behind Superman for this summer. "You've seen what can happen when Warner Bros. Discover gets together behind a Barbie or a Beetlejuice or a Wonka or Kong. And that's how its being treated right now for Superman. Everything that DZ has promised us two years ago when we got the job, it's all been a reality."

The film turns 20! See the Charlie and The Chocolate Factory cast of ticket-winning kids then vs now
Ready to feel old? The Tim Burton movie Charlie and The Chocolate Factory is officially turning twenty years old next week. Though the Roald Dahl novel the movie is based on has been adapted a number of times, first in 1971 starring Gene Wilder as Wonka, and then more recently with Wonka's origin story being told with Timothée Chalamet starring as the titular character, if you grew up in the early 2000s, then the 2005 version is likely to be the one you remember best. Starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Christopher Lee and Freddie Highmore, the movie was the eighth-highest grossing movie in the world in 2005. And in the two decades since the movie debuted, a lot has changed foe the cast of the movie, particularly those playing the ticket-winning child roles. So what are those five golden ticket winners up to now? Here's a look at the cast of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory kids then and now. Freddie Highmore had already starred in nearly 10 projects at age 13, and had just wrapped on the highly acclaimed Finding Neverland, when he began filming as the lead of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Following on from his golden ticket role, Freddie has gone onto star in many more projects including The Spiderwick Chronicles, Astro Boy, The Art of Getting By, Bates Motel and the series he is now most currently known for - The Good Doctor, of which he has been the lead for seven seasons and received a Golden Globe nomination for. Oh, and he's now married too. You can next catch him on screen in Prime Video's The Assassin, which he is starring in alongside Keeley Hawes. AnnaSophia Robb played the bubblegum blowing Violet Beauregarde in 2005. It was her third movie role at age 12 and she went onto star in some of the biggest children's films of the 2000s including Bridge to Terabitha (alongside Josh Hutcherson), Spy School, and Race to Witch Mountain. In her adult career she's played a young Carrie Bradshaw in The Carrie Diaries, been main cast in the series Mercy Street, The Act and most recently you can see her in the series Grosse Point Garden Society. Like her Charlie and The Chocolate Factory co-star Freddie, AnnaSophia has also gotten married, tying the knot in 2022 to partner Trevor Paul. Jordan Fry played Mike Teavee, who as his name suggested did nothing but watch TV. Charlie and The Chocolate Factory was Jordan's first role and since then he's gone onto star in a few films - Meet The Robinsons, Raising Flagg and The Journey. More recently he's been starring in short and indie films. Augustus Gloop is the first child to be eliminated as he falls in the chocolate river. He was played in the 2005 film by Philip Wiegratz, who hails from Germany and has continued his career with a number of German TV shows and movies including Lore, Die Wölfe and Der Schlunz. Veruca Salt was the spoilt brat of the group of kids who attend the Willy Wonka tour, she was played by Swedish actress Julia Winter. Unlike the rest of her cast mates, Julia never acted again and has since stayed out of the public eye.
