Mass cleaning drive to begin at govt offices on June 5

Coimbatore: A mass cleaning drive will begin on June 5 to clear old materials dumped on all govt offices premises in Coimbatore district. This is in connection with the statewide initiative 'Thooimai Mission' for sustainable waste management in Tamil Nadu and the observance of the World Environment Day . The statewide mission was launched in April. On Friday, the first meeting of the mission was conducted in Coimbatore district. District-level and block-level committees have been formed. NGOs and volunteers who are already working on a similar mission have been included as committee members at various levels in panchayats and villages. Ten members of the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) are part of the district-level committee. RAAC secretary R Raveendran said the focus is to have source segregation at the grassroots level, go for recycling and eliminate landfills. In the present scenario, even in a small village, panchayats are gradually creating landfills due to a lack of process, which is the result of mixed waste. There are local recycling industries in the market that are performing well. "We are already working in Perur and Keeranatham villages with progressive results in waste management. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bolsas nos olhos? (Tente isso hoje à noite) Revista Saúde & Beleza Saiba Mais Undo Even if we separate plastic waste, the multi-layered packaging (MLP), i.e., packaging of chips, biscuits and other eateries, must go for different processing, which will later be sent to the cement industry. However, if we combine all kinds of plastics together, they will certainly end up being dumped in vacant spaces or water bodies. Also, scrutinising the best vendor for recycling should be taken care of," said Raveendran. He specified that the old materials like tables, chairs and other items that still hold capital value would be sold, and the rest would be sent for recycling. "Unlike any other activities like desilting, municipal solid waste management is a daily process without compromise. The major problem is the payment for sanitary work, which stands low. Probably if their payments are raised from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000, there would certainly be a viable change in waste management," he added.

Environment Day 2025 special: Easy ways to reduce plastic usage-here's how

Every year on June 5, the United Nations observes World Environment Day as a means of encouraging environmental awareness and call-to-action. Similar to an annual Earth "check-up day," everyone is urged to take some small but meaningful action to protect the environment. Through initiatives ranging from international conferences, climate action, and social media movements to tree planting and plastic-free campaigns, people from more than 150 countries come together under the common theme of World Environment Day to promote a healthier planet. Plastic pollution is suffocating the planet – India alone uses billions of plastic bottles every year. As World Environment Day 2025 approaches, here are five simple ways to cut down on plastic and make travel more sustainable. 5 ways to reduce plastic on this World Environment Day 2025 1. Avoid bottled water More than 14 billion plastic bottles are consumed every year in India alone, and many of them end up choking natural ecosystems or polluting tourist spots. Bringing a reusable water bottle is one of the easiest methods. Every time you decide to refill instead of purchase, it is a small habit change that pays off. Also Read From home, bring a set of reusable linen napkins. They are washable and reusable, and they are both soft and long-lasting. You will not have to sacrifice convenience or hygienic conditions to drastically reduce trash. 3. Reusable cutlery, boxes & straws Include a lightweight tiffin or Tupperware box, a straw, a reusable fork, and a spoon in a small package. It is particularly helpful if you choose to bag leftovers or stop at a dhaba/restaurant on the way for takeaway. 4. Zero-waste toilet kit Simple and efficient sustainable alternatives include using a soap bar, refilling your shampoo or conditioner in reusable bottles and switching to a bamboo toothbrush. 5. Digital tickets Most travellers now use digital copies of their tickets on their phones – whether for hotels, buses, trains, or flights. Choosing e-tickets and storing IDs digitally helps reduce paper and plastic waste, cutting down on unnecessary printing.

State biodiversity board launches anti-plastic drive

Ranchi: In the lead-up to World Environment Day on June 5, the Jharkhand Biodiversity Board has launched a statewide initiative where BMC will identify and clean plastic-prone areas to combat plastic pollution. The initiative aligns with the 2024 World Environment Day theme of "Eliminating Environment Pollution. " The campaign is being implemented in close coordination with Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) at the local level, focusing on both urban and rural regions. In the initial phase of the month-long campaign, BMCs from 50 panchayats were assigned the responsibility of surveying and cleaning up plastic waste in their respective areas. These panchayats are located in five districts: Ranchi, Chatra, Palamu, Giridih, and Hazaribag, where BMCs will work to identify plastic-littered zones, including public areas, forest patches, and biodiversity-sensitive locations. Once collected, the plastic waste will be deposited in designated recycling dustbins. Member secretary and chief executive officer of the JBB, Sanjeev Kumar, stated, "The goal is to reduce plastic waste, promote community awareness, and strengthen the practice of plastic recycling across the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! The campaign encourages the active participation of local volunteers, school students, self-help groups, and panchayat members. Educational sessions, street plays, art and quiz competitions, and public awareness rallies are also being organised in several villages to amplify the message of plastic reduction and proper waste disposal. Kumar added, "As this is a month-long campaign, the awareness activities and plastic collection drives will gradually be extended to other districts across the state beyond the initial five. Additional panchayats will be mobilised in the coming weeks to conduct similar plastic surveys, community engagement programs, and recycling efforts."
