Photo: PTI New Delhi: The Wildlife Institute of India, a wildlife research organisation directly under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, said in a circular to its staff on June 23 that their salaries for the month would be withheld unless they provide a satisfactory explanation for why they missed the World Yoga Day event held in the institute on June 21. The said emails, accessed by The Wire, claimed that the overall participation for the yoga session held at the Institute to commemorate World Yoga Day on June 21 was 'poor', despite 'repeated notices' issued by the Institute and communications received from the union environment ministry. The registrar of the Institute, J.A. Johnson, said in the email that this 'poor attendance' was 'observed with concern'. 'Please note that while WII ensures the timely disbursement of monthly salaries/emoluments to over 600 employees (including researchers), about 75 individuals participated in this Important National event,' the Registrar's email read. The email went on to demand that every staff member of the Institute who did not participate in the World Yoga Day event 'without prior intimation' submit a written explanation for the reason for their absence to their respective reporting officers, sectional heads or the Deputy Registrar. 'The Finance Officer is requested to withhold the release of June 2025 month salary until the attendance record, tour details, or valid written explanation is received and verified,' the email said. The Registrar's email claimed that this notice is being issued 'with the approval of the Competent Authority'. The Competent Authority of the WII is the union environment ministry, as the Institute comes directly under the aegis of the ministry. The Wire has written to the Union environment ministry for a response. This report will be updated when they respond. However, later on the same day, the Registrar sent another email saying that the explanation called for the absence of staff for the yoga day event was withdrawn. The Director of WII Virendra Tiwari later told PTI that no action is proposed to be taken against staff who missed the World Yoga Day event. Sree Narayana Guru is guiding light for nation-builders: PM Modi

New Delhi, June 24 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday marked the centenary of the historic conversation between Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi at a special celebration held at an event here. In his address, Modi underscored the historic significance of the 1925 meeting between the two legends, which he described as a pivotal moment that shaped the future of India's freedom movement. He stated, 'This meeting not only showed a new direction for our struggle for independence but also infused the movement with a deeper meaning, reinforcing the dream of an independent India,' and asserted that Sree Narayana Guru's teachings have a timeless relevance, particularly for those who are committed to the service of the nation and society. "India's speciality is that whenever our country gets entangled in the whirlpool of difficulties, some great personality is born in some corner of the country to show a new direction to society," the PM said, while adding that some of them work for the spiritual upliftment of society, while others accelerate social reforms in the social sphere. "The ideals of Sree Narayan Guru are a great treasure for all of humanity. Those who work with the resolve to serve the nation and society, Sree Narayan Guru is like a guiding light for them," he said. The PM also expressed his deep connection to the ideals of Sree Narayana Guru, particularly in relation to his work for the oppressed and marginalized communities. PM Modi noted, "Whenever I make decisions for the betterment of the exploited and poor, I always remember Guru Ji. A hundred years back, under British rule, people used to fear speaking against those deteriorated societal conditions. Sree Narayana Guru did not fear anything because he believed in harmony and equality; he believed in truth, service and cordiality. This very inspiration shows us a way of 'Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas'; this very belief gives us the strength to make an India where the person standing at the last is our first priority," he added. Emphasising India's global leadership, Modi further noted the country's role in promoting initiatives like World Yoga Day and the One Sun, One World, One Grid project, which aims to create a sustainable energy future. "India is leading the way in global movements focused on environmental sustainability, health, and unity. In 2023, during India's leadership of the G-20, we embraced the theme 'One Earth, One Family, One Future,' reflecting our shared global responsibility,' the PM added.
