Make tourists use only Sabah Pay app. Otherwise government suffers revenue loss: Sabah Association of Tour and Travel Agents

Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: Wu Vui Tek Text Size: 'That way, all tourists spending could be properly recorded, and the government would not miss out on SST and other tax revenues,' said Liaw. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Satta) Chairman Dato' Seri Winston Liaw said he was speaking up to protect the interest of Sabahans to have a fair share of the state's economy when commenting on the Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal operations recently. 'I am defending Sabahans and protecting their rights. Easybook is a platform company based in Penang. Are there no good platform companies in Sabah?'Sabah has platforms such as Sabah Pay, GoNet and others,' said Liaw. He was responding to Suria Capital Holdings Berhad Group Managing Director Datuk Ng Kiat Min, who denied that the operations of the Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal had been transferred to Easybook. Ng had said the terminal is operated by Suria Bumira Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Suria Capital, while Easybook was appointed as a ticketing platform to run the centralised terminal ticketing system at the terminal and handle offline ticket transactions to the islands. KK Sentral now dubbed the ‘KK City of Lights'

Published on: Thursday, July 17, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 17, 2025 By: Wu Vui Tek Text Size: Dr Sabin (second from left) places his palm on a tablet to launch the event while others look on. Kota Kinabalu: KK Sentral, once labelled a white elephant project, has now been dubbed the 'Kota Kinabalu City of Lights' following the launch of its colourful and dazzling lights, which have made the area livelier at night. The terminal façade is now adorned with an intelligent RGBW (red, green, blue, white) LED lighting system controlled via Bluetooth technology — the first of its kind in Malaysia. Advertisement This technology has proven to be an efficient and modern method of lighting management. In addition, the terminal, which serves express bus services from the city to the south of Kota Kinabalu, will also feature the largest LED screen installation project in Sabah and possibly in Malaysia. 'This project is expected to be completed by August 2025. Once again, KK Sentral will become a location filled with vibrant lighting,' said Mayor Datuk Dr Sabin Samitah during the launch of the City of Lights KK Sentral, along with its handicraft stalls and seafood restaurant. The illumination of the terminal façade marks a significant step towards realising the vision of making Kota Kinabalu a more vibrant, smart and illuminated city, he said. 'This initiative is not just about improving the city's visuals and landscape. It reflects our commitment to creating a friendly, safe, culturally rich and technologically progressive city,' Sabin said. He said light not only brightens the environment but also unites the community, enhances tourism, nurtures civic pride and builds a distinct visual identity for the city. 'We believe KK Sentral will continue to stand out as one of the city's lighting façade icons and inspire more such projects in future,' he said. He added that the lighting of the terminal signals a new aspiration to build Kota Kinabalu into a brighter, safer and more vibrant city — not only in physical terms, but also in the hearts and hopes of all its citizens. He attributed the success of the project to DBKK Holdings Sdn Bhd and its strategic partners — PCO Electrical (M) Sdn Bhd, KK Sentral Handicraft Association, the Seafood Noodles Restaurant and the media. Also present were City Hall Director General Datuk Lifred, DBKK Holdings Executive Director Jimon Jahim and PCO Electrical Managing Director Lee Huei Chang. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? English boost for 51 rural schools

Published on: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 15, 2025 By: Wu Vui Tek Text Size: Nancy launching REAL programme at SK Pekan, Papar as Tulip (right) and others RCKK Pearl and LDS Charities members look on. Kota Kinabalu: A total of 51 schools across 14 districts in Sabah are now part of the rural focus English for all (REAL) programme since its inception in 2016. "More than 10,000 students have benefitted from this initiative, which has received about RM1 million in funding for the purchase of teaching materials,' said Tulip Noorazyze, Chair of Project REAL under the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu (RCKK) Pearl. Advertisement She said the programme includes inter-school and inter-district competitions, and teacher training workshops. 'Over the past nine years, we've seen significant improvements in students' English examination results and overall proficiency. This progress is also reflected in the annual poem writing, speech, and storytelling competitions,' she added. The club also organises annual teacher training workshops, conducted by professional English language trainers, to introduce creative and engaging methods for teaching English in rural schools. She said the club will continue its efforts to expand the programme to as many rural schools as possible. This year, the initiative was launched in 12 primary schools across Pitas, Papar, and Beaufort, in collaboration with the Sabah State Education Department. The schools in Pitas are SK Rosob, SK Bangkau-Bangkau, and SK Bawing. In Papar, the schools involved are SK Pekan Papar, SJKC Tung Shan, SK Lingan, and SK Ulu Lumagar. The participating schools in Beaufort are SK Padas Damit, SK Kota Klias, SK Biah Batu 65, SK Linungkuan, and SK Lembah Poring. The launch was officiated by Senior Assistant Director of the Language Unit at the Sabah Education Department, Nancy @ Aminah Idrus. Also present were RCKK Pearl President Chendramata Sinteh, Elder Larry and Sister Hathaway from Latter-day Saints (LDS) Charities, who sponsored the programme in the 12 schools. Project REAL aims to bridge the English proficiency gap between rural and urban students. Each school receives between 400 and 600 English storybooks, bilingual dictionaries for all students, smart TVs or LCD projectors, bookshelves, floor mats, and stools donated by the club. As part of the project's requirements, each headmaster or headmistress and the English language panel must draw up five action plans to enhance English proficiency in their schools. The initiative aligns with the Education Department's high immersive programme. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kota Kinabalu: Kepayan Square, located at the Kepayan low-cost housing area, will undergo a transformation ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026. This involves the construction of a proposed roof measuring 75m x 20m (1,500sq m) at the pedestrian walkway with a completion timeline of five months. The design was presented by Kota Kinabalu City Hall (KKCH) to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, who visited the site as part of the KPKT Sentuhan Kasih tour series. KKCH Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah was also present. However, after listening to the briefing, Nga suggested that KKCH redesign the structure with a higher roof to allow the installation of ceiling fans, ensuring better ventilation and a cooler environment.
