Shamal George will make Scottish football return with St Mirren a family affair
The big keeper has joined the Buddies on a season-long loan from Wycombe Wanderers. Shamal George insists his move to St Mirren will be a family affair once his best Buddies join him north of the border. The 27-year-old keeper made his debut for Saints in Sunday's 2-1 win over Ayr United in the Premier Sports Cup after joining on a season-long loan from Sky Bet League One side Wycombe Wanderers. George is up here on his own just now with fiancee Anna and six-month-old twins Mateo and Alani-Rae still at their home in Oxford. However, that will all change in the coming weeks – and ex-Livingston custodian George admits he wants them by his side as he begins his Paisley adventure. 'They're not up here with me yet,' he said. 'The kids are sleeping well but it's a bit tough leaving them. But they are coming up in two or three weeks. We've got a boy and a girl – twins! They are Mateo and Alani-Rae. 'At first, they weren't sleeping well but now it's a bit better. The thought of leaving the kids made it a difficult decision to come up here. 'We were living in Oxford so that's a seven-hour drive. It was tough to leave them when I did but I've got to get game time for my career so this was one I couldn't sit on. 'They are coming up here to be with me for the 10 months I'm here; I couldn't do without them.' George explained the reasons for last summer's switch from the Lions to Buckinghamshire. He said: 'At Livingston, the first year was really good. I really enjoyed it, it's a good club and really good group of lads. The second year didn't go to plan when we got relegated. 'I wanted to get back to England because my fiancee Anna was pregnant so we needed more help down the road.' George's move to Wycombe turned into a nightmare when he suffered a horror injury during the 2-0 FA Cup win over Portsmouth in January. 'Last season was tough for me but I'm happy to be back playing football,' he said. 'My groin came off my bone and I had a hernia on the same side so, not ideal. I got injured in the first seven minutes. I kicked the ball and heard the pop. It was very painful. 'We had great physios at Wycombe, they made it fly by – and obviously having kids, they came around the time I got injured. I could spend a bit more time when them. It made my time out injured that bit easier.' George has enjoyed a full pre-season so is raring to go and looking forward to working with boss Stephen Robinson and goalkeeping coach Jamie Langfield. He added: 'I had to get game time this season. I believe St Mirren had been after me for a while so I spoke to the gaffer and Langers. 'They called me and what they had to say really interested me. I was happy to come back to the Scottish league and get valuable minutes.' Meanwhile, Saints' Slovak stopper Peter Urminsky has joined Northern Irish Premiership side Glentoran on a season-long loan meaning George and Ryan Mullen will be the first-team keepers at the SMiSA Stadium going forward.

Unfortunately, Arsenal are one of the best teams in the world: Spurs head coach Thomas Frank
Kai Tak: New Tottenham Hotspur head coach Thomas Frank had some jokes for the reporters ahead of his first North London Derby against Arsenal at Kai Tak Sports Park as part of their pre-season tour. The Danish head coach claimed their sworn rivals are unfortunately one of the best teams in the world ahead of the first-ever North London Derby being played outside of the United Kingdom. "I think it's a great challenge besides being our biggest rivals and the first North London Derby outside the UK. It's also right now one of the best teams, I must say unfortunately in the world we also need to be honest. "In that way it's going to be a big test, but it's more than a test as against Arsenal it's not only a friendly. Of course it's a game we will do everything we can to win,' said Frank in the pre-match conference. Frank also confirmed Rodrigo Bentancur is set to return to pre-season action against Arsenal in Hong Kong on Thursday. The midfielder was laid low by illness and ruled out of taking part in the friendlies against Wycombe and Luton Town on Saturday. However, he travelled with the squad on Sunday and is now in line to return at Kai Tak Stadium. Thomas also had positive news on Dominic Solanke and James Maddison. 'Dom is looking much better, progressing, we'll see if it's too early for Arsenal, but we're positive about him,' he told us. 'Madders is looking better and better, could also be too early for Arsenal, again, we'll see. Rodri is back from illness, so that's good,' said Frank to Spurs' media team. Speaking generally about physical preparation for the season, Thomas added: 'We are very aware of how we want to play, how we want to train, and you need to be completely aligned with the style of play with the physical output in terms of how we want to train, so we make sure the platers are robust enough. There are gym sessions, recover, which is just as important, then the ability to be able to compete in all the tournaments.'

Thomas Frank plays down injury concerns over Dominic Solanke and Destiny Udogie
Left-back Udogie and England forward Solanke were set to feature in Spurs' second friendly of the day at Luton, but were pulled out as a precaution hours after Wycombe had earned a 2-2 draw with the Europa League winners. Solanke was absent from the 0-0 draw at Kenilworth Road due to a minor ankle injury and Udogie was withdrawn before kick-off. However, the duo are expected to join the squad on Sunday's flight to Hong Kong for Tottenham's week-long pre-season tour of Asia. It ends goalless in Luton ⏱️ — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) July 26, 2025 'Dom has a minor ankle issue, nothing we're worried about, just a precaution,' Frank said. 'Destiny felt something in the warm up, so, again, just a precaution. We just want to be on top of that.' Frank used two completely different starting line-ups for the friendly fixtures, with captain Son Heung-min involved in the 2-2 draw with Wycombe at the club's training ground, but not with the squad for the stalemate at Luton. Son, who has entered the final 12 months of his contract, has attracted interest from MLS club Los Angeles FC this week, but Tottenham are yet to receive a bid for the South Korean attacker, the PA news agency understands. Two goals from Pape Sarr earned Spurs a draw with Wycombe – after Rodrigo Bentancur was forced to pull out before kick-off due to illness. A post shared by Pape matar sarr (@pape) A different line-up was fielded at Luton where Tottenham's summer recruit Mohammed Kudus had an early shot cleared off the line before the hosts threatened in the second half, but Nahki Wells had a back-post volley saved by Antonin Kinsky and lifted another effort over to ensure it finished goalless in front of 10,071 spectators. Frank added: 'I would say the big takeaway on the positive side is that we got more or less 75 minutes into most of the players – that was the reason why we played two mixed teams and subbed on all the youngsters. 'So, the physical, minute-wise – box ticked. I'm happy with that.'
