vivo X Fold5 review
vivo's X Fold series has rapidly earned a reputation for blending cutting-edge hardware with sleek, pocketable design - and the new X Fold5 continues that legacy in bold fashion. Unveiled as the company's sole flagship foldable this year, the X Fold5 builds on the success of the X Fold3 series with meaningful upgrades in design, battery life, and performance. The company has skipped an X Fold4 model altogether, possibly due to the number 4 being considered unlucky in Chinese culture. At just 4.3 mm thin when unfolded and weighing 217 g, it is the lightest and slimmest "book-style" foldable device that vivo has ever made. This is made possible by a reengineered hinge and the use of aerospace-grade materials, continuing vivo's push to deliver elegant yet robust foldables. Battery life sees a capacity increase with the introduction of a 6,000 mAh semi-solid Si/C battery, a first for the segment. It's paired with 80W wired and 40W wireless charging. vivo X Fold5 5G specs at a glance: Body: 159.7x142.3x4.3mm, 217g; Glass front (closed), aluminum alloy frame, glass fiber back; IP58/IP59+ dust protected and water resistant (high pressure water jets; immersible up to 3m for 30 min). 159.7x142.3x4.3mm, 217g; Glass front (closed), aluminum alloy frame, glass fiber back; IP58/IP59+ dust protected and water resistant (high pressure water jets; immersible up to 3m for 30 min). Misc: Fingerprint reader (side-mounted); stereo speakers. Camera-wise, the vivo X Fold5 takes more of a side-step compared to its predecessor than a clear-cut upgrade. The main camera is still a 50MP unit, now with a brighter f/1.6 aperture, though it uses a slightly smaller 1/1.56-inch sensor (down from 1/1.3"). The ultrawide maintains a similar sensor size and 15mm focal length, but it is now coupled with a f/2.1 lens, still offering phase-detection autofocus. The zoom camera swaps the previous 64MP sensor for a 50MP 1/1.95-inch unit, while extending reach with an 85mm f/2.6 periscope lens, up from 70mm. While the setup is still ZEISS co-engineered and quite capable, it's a reshuffle rather than a significant generational leap. Powering the device is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.1 storage, ensuring top-tier performance. It runs Android 15 out of the box with vivo's OriginOS 5 in China or Funtouch OS 15 for global markets, complete with enhanced multitasking features and foldable-optimized UI elements. With a competitive price tag and a spec sheet that ticks all the right boxes - especially in terms of design, battery, and display - the vivo X Fold5 positions itself as a serious challenger in the premium foldable segment. Let's see if the experience lives up to the promise. Unboxing The vivo X Fold5 ships in a lavish two-piece cardboard box. It is very rigid and should protect the phone quite well during shipping. As with all foldables, the unit itself comes fully open inside a plastic cradle. Our X Fold5 review unit came with a 90W FlashCharge charger in the box. It still uses a USB Type-A lead on the charger side, but at least the provided USB Type-A to Type-C cable seems to be standard and non-proprietary (without extra pins). Also in the box is a hard plastic case, or rather, shell for the phone. It mostly covers half of it, but that's about what you can hope for out of a case for a book-style foldable. Page 2

Ivan, 13 July 2025 This is the vivo X Fold5 and it's coming to a few global markets! The phone is the successor to the vivo X Fold3 and X Fold3 Pro. There is not going to be an X Fold4, and it's likely that this X Fold5 will be the vanilla and Pro in one. The vivo X Fold5 ships with a USB-A to USB-C cable, a 90W charger, and a case. Vivo pushed the envelope with the design of the X Fold5. It's thinner than its predecessor - 9.2mm vs 11.2mm when folded, 4.3mm vs 5.2mm when open. That's a big difference. The new phone is also lighter at 224 grams compared to the old phone's 236 grams. The X Fold5 is now dust protected with an IP rating of IP58/IP59+. It's not completely dust-tight, that would mean a rating of IP68, but it's better than its predecessor, which had no official dust protection. The vivo X Fold5 Both the cover screen and the inner one have almost identical specs - 6.53-inch and 8.03-inch, respectively, both LTPO 120Hz 10-bit panels, but the cover screen has a higher theoretical peak brightness at 5,500 nits. Camera-wise, the vivo X Fold5 is a bit of a side-step to its predecessor. The main camera is a 50MP unit with a brighter f/1.6 lens, but has a smaller 1/1.56-inch sensor (vs 1/1.3-inch). The ultrawide angle has the same-sized sensor but a different 15mm f/2.1 lens; it still has phase detect autofocus. The zoom camera has a similar sensor to its predecessor (50MP 1/1.95-inch vs 64MP 1/2.0-inch), but a zoomier 85mm f/2.6 lens (vs 70mm f/2.6). Vivo also increased the battery by 5%, it's now a 6,000mAh unit. There's also a new custom button in the top right of the phone, which toggles between Vibration and Ring mode, and can flick on the flash - nice! The custom button is tiny Book-style foldables are getting better and better! Here are possibly the best three around, from left to right - the Honor Magic V5, the vivo X Fold5, and the Galaxy Z Fold7, which has finally caught up to the competition on hardware! Vivo X Fold 5 launching on June 25: Everything to know about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 rival
It's going to be an intense foldable rivalry in the month of July. Not only is the Vivo X Fold 5, the successor to the X Fold 3 from last year, rumoured to release on July 10, but the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is also tipped to launch on the same date. We've already done a bunch of stories around the Galaxy Z Fold 7, so we won't delve into that here. Instead, let's turn our focus to the Vivo X Fold 5. As of now, the phone is expected to launch in India sometime in July, while the official China launch has been confirmed for June 25 at 7 PM local time. Here's everything you need to Vivo hasn't dropped any official teaser for India, the phone has already taken the internet by storm in China. Its product page is live on Vivo's official Chinese website, and pre-orders have begun. Interestingly, last year's X Fold 3 series had two models — standard and Pro — but only the X Fold 3 Pro came to India. This year, it seems like Vivo is starting with just one model — the standard X Fold 5. That said, we'll have to wait for June 25 to see if a Pro variant also makes an coming to what the device offers — a lot of the key details have already been shared by Vivo's product manager, Han Boxiao, on Weibo. He has confirmed that the phone will use 8T LTPO panels on both the inner and outer screens, offering a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to 4,500 nits peak brightness. Both displays are also expected to support TV Rheinland's global eye protection and Zeiss Master colour certification. Vivo claims this will deliver better clarity, comfort, and colour accuracy in all lighting conditions, compared to its The Vivo X Fold 5 also meets IP5X dust protection and an IPX9+ water resistance rating. It can reportedly be folded and unfolded 1,000 times even under a depth of 1m of water, and can keep working at temperatures as low as - key highlight is its weight and thickness. The X Fold 5 is said to be significantly slimmer and lighter than the previous model, weighing around 209g and measuring just 4.3mm when the specs front, the Vivo X Fold 5 is expected to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, paired with up to 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. The camera setup is likely to include a 50-megapixel triple rear camera system, though finer details are still under wraps. The battery could be around 6,000mAh with support for 90W fast charging and 30W wireless charging — again, solid numbers for a the most surprising detail so far is that the Vivo X Fold 5 may offer support for Apple's ecosystem. According to the teasers shared on Weibo, the phone might be able to connect with the Apple Watch, access iCloud files directly, and even work with MacBooks and AirPods. If this turns out to be true, it would mark a rare moment of cross-platform compatibility — something no other Android brand has really said, the focus now remains on Vivo and how it positions the phone in terms of pricing in India. As mentioned above, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to launch around the same time, and also, it's highly unlikely that both phones will end up launching on the same date, considering these are two biggies from the smartphone industry we are talking about. However, if by even 1 per cent chance it does happen, if both the X Fold 5 and Z Fold 7 do launch on the same day, it's going to be an interesting day in smartphone history. July seems to be tuned to India Today Tech for all the latest on the upcoming foldable phones in July.
