Schauffele trying to ‘piece way back' ahead of Open defence
PA Media/DPA London Defending Open champion Xander Schauffele admits it was humbling to see the 'perfect storm' which brought him two majors in three months last summer disappear. A year ago the 31-year-old added the Claret Jug to his US PGA title in a stellar season which also brought 13 other top-10 finishes. However, a rib injury in December restricted him to just one appearance in the first three months of this year and any hope he had of continuing his momentum was lost. 'Going from on top of the moon to, you know, knocked off completely, it's a humbling thing for sure,' Schauffele told the PA news agency at an event for sponsors Callaway in Portrush's famous Harbour Bar. 'Winning my first major, getting the monkey off my back, came at a perfect time - if you want to, call it a perfect storm. 'Feeling completely free and playing unbelievable golf, it's a pretty dangerous thing so I felt like I was riding that wave. 'So I'm just trying to piece my way back, gain a little bit of confidence each and every week with each and every shot to be honest.' His confidence received a boost with only his second top-10 finish in 12 events at last week's Scottish Open. Performing well on a links course was ideal preparation for the defence of the Claret Jug he won at Troon, but the American does not really view it in that manner. 'It's a strange thing to defend when the venue changes. When I handed over the Claret Jug on Monday morning it felt like a defence, but when I'm on the property I'm not remembering the shots I hit when I won,' added Schauffele. 'I'm trying to relearn the course, learn how far the ball's going, what the winds are doing, what bunkers you can and can't hit it in. So it's a weird thing.' What does not change, however, is the fact he has two majors under his belt to give him valuable experience. He said: 'I don't think it hurts. I think it's one of those things where, if I can get myself in a position, I've done it twice now. There'll be a pack of guys who have done it more than that and then there'll be a pack of guys who've never done it. 'So it'll give me a slight advantage in that moment, but we're far away from that and I'm trying to focus on some small things to start. 'My advantage will be if I can put myself in a good position come the weekend.'

OPEN champion Xander Schauffele celebrated last year's triumph by drinking tequila out of the Claret Jug and smoking a big Cuban cigar. But the Californian, whose form has nosedived since he won his second Major at Troon 12 months ago, is not your typical brash American. 4 4 4 4 Schauffele, 31, revealed he does not have any of his 12 professional trophies at home, claims he does not know the whereabouts of his Olympic gold medal and hates the fact his wife put a photo of that Tokyo 2021 success on the wall of his gym. As he prepares to defend his jug at Portrush this week, he said: 'I don't have any trophies at my house. They are at my parents' house, probably, or in a bank vault. 'I don't really invite people over, so am I just going to go look at them myself? 'I don't want to walk into a trophy room and say, 'Look how great I am'. I was raised to think that way, and it stuck. 'I actually have no idea where it (the Olympic gold medal) is, to be completely honest. 'What am I going to do with it? 'My wife hung up some pictures in my gym of me winning the Olympic medal, and she put it so high up, I can't reach it. 'I'd have to get a ladder and it bothers me. 'Like anything... put up a photo of me in a Masters Green Jacket (which Schauffele has not won). That would p**s me off. 'Something like that would be more motivating. I don't want to look at that photo. 'I'd rather have a photo of my dogs on the wall or a clock. I'm always late, so maybe a clock would be good.' Two-time Major winner Schauffele admits he did try tequila out of the Claret Jug — but insists he does not drink like the locals here on the Northern Irish coast. He said: 'I'm embarrassed to say I had a little tequila from it on holiday in Portugal — but, no, not with salt and lime because the lid barely opens. 'I've had wine out of it, but not much. I don't drink a whole lot. 'I definitely drank more after a few championships last year. 'But I'm not Irish, I know the celebrations go a bit deeper here than what I'm accustomed to! 'In my fashion, I had a cigar. I had my family. I had a few phone calls. It was a nice celebration. 'Then we were going to the Olympics shortly after. It seems whenever we play in these tournaments, you're on to the next right away. 'It's a bummer to give up the trophy this year. I'm looking forward to trying to get it back.'

Xander Schauffele has no need for trophies — but he'd still like the Claret Jug back
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — Xander Schauffele returned the Claret Jug on Monday, ending his one-year custody of the British Open trophy. He drank tequila from it in Portugal and wine on a few other occasions. He called relinquishing it 'a bummer' and said he would fight to regain possession of the silver trophy again this week. But it turns out he's not a trophy guy. Schauffele said he doesn't display any of the trophies from his nine Tour titles at his home. So, where are the trophies? 'My parents' house, probably in a bank vault. I think that's where some of the — like one of the trophies was when they travel,' he said. As for the Olympic gold medal that he won at the Tokyo Summer Olympics? He said he had no idea. 'What am I going to do with it? I don't really invite people over to my house. Am I just going to go look at it myself?" he said. "That's the way I feel about it. I don't want to walk into a trophy room, look how great I am. I was just raised to think that way, and it's kind of stuck. I really don't sit at home, you know what I mean?' Schauffele isn't the only champion golfer with this mindset. Lee Trevino, who won the British Open in 1971 and 1972, didn't keep his trophies around. They were tucked away in a bedroom upstairs, he said in an interview with the USGA. Neither did Masters champions and 15-time Tour winner Fred Couples, who kept them boxed in a closet. Tiger Woods only showcased his 15 major trophies. At the 2021 Masters, Rory McIlroy recounted how he was struck that the other 67 trophies from his remaining Tour wins were nowhere to be seen and asked him where they were. "He said, 'I don't know.' I go, 'What?' He said, 'Yeah, my mom has some, and a few are in the office and a few are wherever,'" McIlroy recalled in his pre-tournament interview ahead of the 85th Masters. When she moved and sold that house to Yani Tseng, the Korean golfer attempted to fill all the empty slots. But Schauffele won't necessarily miss having the Claret Jug around should he fail to defend his title this week at Royal Portrush Golf Club. And it's safe to say there may be some remodeling done in his home gym soon. 'My wife hung up some pictures of me in my gym of like me winning the Olympic medal, and she put it so high up I can't reach it. I have to get a ladder now, and it bothers me,' he said. 'Like if anything, put up like me in a Masters jacket, like that would piss me off, you know what I mean? Something like that is more motivating than like, all right, that's not great. I don't want to look at that.' When asked what he would prefer on his gym walls, Schauffele replied, 'A photo of my dogs or nothing, a clock maybe. I'm always late, so maybe a clock would be good for me.'
