Microsoft Xbox consoles' prices jumping at least 20%, starting today

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — That Xbox console you had been eying is getting more expensive, as are some of its bigger titles later this year. Microsoft Corp. announced Thursday that it has raised the MSRP worldwide for its Xbox family of consoles as well as controllers and accessories, effective May 1. On top of that, the technology giant said that some of its first-party games will begin to retail at $79.99 starting this holiday season, from their previous $69.99. 'We understand that these changes are challenging,' writes Microsoft in its announcement, 'and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development.' Under the new pricing, the base Xbox Series X console, which had cost $499.99, now costs $599.99, an increase of 20 percent. The less powerful Xbox Series S with 512GB of storage will now cost $379.99, a 27 percent increase from its previous $299.99. Microsoft's move isn't completely unexpected with the uncertainty created by the Trump tariffs. The price increase also arrives hot on the heels of Nintendo provoking conversation with its upcoming $450 Switch 2 console and $80 'Mario Kart World.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
