China pledges support for Pacific island nations to address climate change

China has pledged to continue its support for Pacific island nations to address climate change. Beijing apparently intends to strengthen its influence in the Pacific region by stressing that it takes a different position from the US on global warming. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his counterparts from 11 island nations, including Kiribati, the Solomon Islands, and Nauru, gathered in the city of Xiamen in China's Fujian Province. The countries wrapped up the meetings and issued a joint statement on Thursday. The statement refers to strengthening trade relations, and continued Chinese support for Pacific nations to deal with the challenges posed by climate change. China's support contrasts with the reluctant stance of US President Donald Trump's administration on the issue. The Trump administration has withdrawn the US from the Paris Agreement on climate change. It has also frozen some US aid programs in the Pacific region. The move has triggered widespread concerns.

Pacific ministers wrap up high level Chinese meeting

Pacific nations have backed China's claim over Taiwan during a high-profile meeting, but have shied away from directly endorsing Beijing's push to "reunify" the democratically ruled island with the mainland. China has also taken a shot at the United States over climate policy, promising to work with the region to combat climate shocks despite the Trump administration's decision to abandon the Paris Agreement. China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday sat down with foreign ministers from eight Pacific nations — along with senior officials from three others — in the southern city of Xiamen. It's the third time China has held a meeting with Pacific foreign ministers, but it's the first time the event has been held in person rather than online, and Beijing has trumpeted the gathering as a major milestone. China has long been pushing to expand its influence throughout the region, and analysts say the Trump administration's sweeping global tariffs and aid cuts will open up more opportunities for it. Beijing has also been intent on building global support for its increasingly forceful stance on Taiwan, which it has pledged to bring under its control.

Top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi arrives in Hong Kong ahead of mediation body launch

Top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi arrived in Hong Kong on Thursday, a day before a signing ceremony for the establishment of an intergovernmental mediation body in the city. Wang arrived on board flight CX973 from Xiamen at 1.34pm with Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu due to welcome him at a dinner for Wang in the evening. Wang, the Chinese foreign minister, will attend the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organisation for Mediation at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Wan Chai on Friday. Announced in 2022, the China-led organisation is designed to create an intergovernmental mediation platform for resolving international disputes. Senior representatives from nearly 60 countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe, as well as delegates from about 20 global bodies such as the UN will also join Friday's ceremony. Among them are Pakistan's deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Ishaq Dar, who will sign the convention and hold several bilateral engagements on the sidelines of the meeting. A forum will be held after the ceremony to discuss mediation of disputes among countries and those relating to international investments. Wang is expected to join a dinner hosted by the Department of Justice after the full-day event.
