Could New England see a spectacular fall foliage season? Here's what experts say
People traveling to see New England's fall foliage often have to plan their vacations early. One expert is offering his advice. Photographer and leaf peeping expert Jeff Folger, nicknamed Jeff Foliage, believes this year could have a 'spectacular fall foliage season.' But, he warns, this is 'barring any dramatic weather over the next two months' as his July prediction is earlier than most offer. He said that a drought in New England is still a possibility but it's less likely than in 2024, which is a good thing. Starting around Sept. 20, fall foliage vacationers should head to Stratton, Maine where he expects the earliest fall colors. However, it won't be widespread colors by then. It might be better to wait until Sept. 25. The bright vibrant colors will start to make their way to New Hampshire and Vermont around Oct. 1. But don't go to Vermont expecting color prior to October. Massachusetts typically sees color after the further north states. Folger didn't share any early predictions for the commonwealth. 'The bottom line is there are no guarantees as far as the weather goes, and the day-to-day weather is critical to what happens,' he wrote. Last year, the weekend of Oct. 4 to Oct. 6 was the 'best weekend for the most northern tier of New England leaf peeping,' according to Yankee Magazine. In Massachusetts, peak leaf peeping hit the state in the Berkshires around Oct. 20. The majority of the state hit the peak a week later on Oct. 27. Other 2025 predictions Explore Fall, a website dedicated to fall foliage, predicts northern New England to start seeing rich colors by Oct. 10. Massachusetts is expected to have beautiful leaves starting around Oct. 18 with a full peak being closer to Oct. 28. Leaf peeping season will be over by Nov. 13. Farmer's Almanac predicts much of New England will be at or near peak fall color by Oct. 11. Massachusetts is expected to be at its peak around Oct. 20 but we could start seeing changes in leaves in September. Similar predictions were made in 2024. The Smoky Mountains' map has some of the earliest predictions. Leaf peeping in Massachusetts, according to the map, could start as early as Sept. 23 with peak fall foliage hitting by Oct. 7. And Massachusetts could be past its peak by Oct. 21. But the changing leaves don't have to dictate your fall vacation vibes, Folger advised. 'Autumn is a state of mind more than a time of year,' he wrote. Vermont is a great place to visit. With its beautiful scenic views, the lush forests perfect for hikes and nature walks and rich history, Vermont has everything that makes New England wonderful. And that's why Yankee Magazine included two Vermont locales in their list of the 12 most beautiful places to visit in New England. "More than anything, look through these photos and then find their equal wherever you may travel in New England: villages, cities, woods, waterways, orchards, farms," Yankee Magazine said. If you're looking to walk through a paradise of color and warmth, this Yankee Magazine pick might be perfect for you. What Yankee Magazine said about Shelburne Farms: "In a region of rocky soil and notoriously changeable weather, few things say resilience like gardens whose roots go back decades. Among New England's horticultural gems are the gardens at Shelburne Farms, sited between Lake Champlain and the property's 19th-century mansion turned inn. Created by the former lady of the manor, Lila O. Webb, they've been extensively restored—much to the delight of visitors to these verdant grounds more than a century onward." You can visit Shelburne Farms at 1611 Harbor Rd. Do you want to take your family out to a blast from the past? Then Yankee Magazine's other Vermont pick for a best place to visit in New England might be for you. What Yankee Magazine said about Burt Henry Covered Bridge: "Covered bridges weren't built to star on calendars,' writes New Hampshire author Howard Mansfield in his 2016 book, Sheds. 'They weren't built to be pretty.' Yet the same structures that once were practical solutions to 19th-century problems—including this classic Town lattice truss bridge in North Bennington—are now scenic lures for 21st-century visitors." Most beautiful spot on in NH, Maine? Yankee Magazine picked these 4 destinations
New Hampshire and Maine are great places to visit. With Maine's beautiful coastal views and New Hampshire's breathtaking mountain ranges perfect for hikes and nature walks, both New Hampshire and Maine states are known for being beautiful. And that's why Yankee Magazine included four Seacoast locales in their list of the 12 most beautiful places to visit in New England. "More than anything, look through these photos and then find their equal wherever you may travel in New England: villages, cities, woods, waterways, orchards, farms," Yankee Magazine said. "Be alert for even the smallest moments of beauty." Here are Yankee Magazine's picks for most beautiful places to visit in New Hampshire and Maine. If you're a fan of sweeping displays of nature's majesty, then going to this national park should definitely be on your bucket list. What Yankee Magazine said about Acadia National Park: "As a largely rural state, Maine offers some of the most pristine night skies imaginable. This celestial bounty is celebrated each September at the Acadia Night Sky Festival, one of the East Coast's biggest and best-known night sky events. You don't have to wait till fall, though, to get a front-row seat to Acadia's cavalcade of stars: The curtain goes up every night." More: These isolated forests in Maine are 'dark skies sanctuaries:' See where There's nothing like being on the water with someone you love, and, just like Katherine Hepburn and Henry Fonda in "On Golden Pond," you could rekindle your love for one another at this New Hampshire lake. What Yankee Magazine said about Squam Lake: "In contrast to the busy summer playground that is nearby Lake Winnipesaukee, Squam Lake has an unhurried, almost romantic air—a loch amid the New Hampshire highlands. Take a boat tour to be charmed by its scattering of islands and stretches of undeveloped shoreline, and keep an eye out for the loons, bald eagles, and great blue herons that nest here." If you're interested in boating on Squam Lake, you're going to need to launch from 534 US-3 in Holderness, N.H., Squam Lakes Association website said. Docking your boat at public lands like Moon Island, Bowman Island, Chamberlain Reynolds Memorial Forest, and Five Finger Point is advised as is steering clear of privately owned areas, which make up much of Squam Lake. Orchards are a New England staple, and this one in the Granite State does not disappoint. What Yankee Magazine said about Alyson's Orchard: "A steep, west-facing hillside at this 350-acre property in Walpole gives its trees abundant exposure, which in turn produces exceptional fruit. That same hillside gives Alyson's visitors abundant views—of the Connecticut River Valley and onward to Vermont—which in turn produce exceptional memories." You can visit Alyson's Orchard at 57 Alyson's Ln., Walpole. With all the stressors in the world and in daily life right now, don't you deserve a stay at a reservation-only inn and restaurant inside a gloriously beautiful greenhouse? Yankee Magazine seems to think so. What Yankee Magazine said about Aragosta: "The reservations-only Hillside Greenhouse at Aragosta, chef-owner Devin Finigan's destination restaurant and inn on Deer Isle might be the prettiest dining room you'll ever see. (The nearby Forest Greenhouse, added in 2023, could be a close contender, though.)" You can visit Aragosta at 300 Goose Cove Rd., Deer Isle. Rin Velasco is a trending reporter.
