Which companies have agreed to drop artificial food dyes?

Video above: FDA announces in April 2025 that it will phase out food dyes. (NEXSTAR) — Dozens of companies that make ice cream and frozen dairy desserts announced on Monday that they would remove artificial food dyes from their products by 2028, marking yet another voluntary move away from such food coloring within the food industry. It comes in response to a mission set forth by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to remove the artificial additives. Why are companies ditching artificial dyes? In April, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary said the agency would move to eliminate several synthetic dyes by the end of next year. That includes Green 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, and Blue 2. Red 3 was set to be banned in food by 2027 because it caused cancer in laboratory rats; the FDA called for that deadline to move up. A new Texas law could have wider effect on how food products are made, experts suggest The agency is relying largely on voluntary efforts by food manufacturers but also plans to establish a standard and timeline for the food industry to switch to natural alternatives and revoke authorization for dyes not in production. Additionally, the FDA said it would authorize four new natural color additives. Which companies have said they'll stop using dyes? Many U.S. food companies are already reformulating their foods, according to Sensient Colors, one of the world's largest producers of food dyes and flavorings. In place of synthetic dyes, foodmakers can use natural hues made from beets, algae and crushed insects and pigments from purple sweet potatoes, radishes and red cabbage. Among those that have recently announced plans to ditch synthetic colors are General Mills, Pepsico, ConAgra, Nestle, McCormick, Tyson Foods, Sam's Club, JM Smucker, Hershey, and Kraft Heinz. In-N-Out confirmed to Nexstar's KLTA in May that it was removing artificial coloring from some items. Nonetheless, relying on voluntary action rather than regulatory requirements won't guarantee compliance, said Thomas Galligan, a scientist with the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer advocacy group. 'Talk is cheap,' Galligan said. 'It's easy for companies to make promises to look like they're being compliant and generate goodwill among consumers and the Trump administration, but it remains to be seen if they will actually follow through.' Not every company is joining in. Mars, which makes Skittles and M&M's, has been a hold-out, according to reports. Are artificial dyes bad? Artificial dyes are used widely in U.S. foods. In Canada and in Europe — where synthetic colors are required to carry warning labels — manufacturers mostly use natural substitutes. Several states, including California and West Virginia, have passed laws restricting the use of artificial colors in foods. Health advocates have long called for the removal of artificial dyes from foods, citing mixed studies indicating they can cause neurobehavioral problems, including hyperactivity and attention issues, in some children. The FDA has maintained that the approved dyes are safe and that 'the totality of scientific evidence shows that most children have no adverse effects when consuming foods containing color additives.' Which foods contain Red 3, the dye now banned by the FDA? The FDA currently allows 36 food color additives, including eight synthetic dyes. Removing dyes from the food supply will not address the chief health problems that plague Americans, said Susan Mayne, a Yale University chronic disease expert and former director of the FDA's food center. 'With every one of their announcements, they're focusing in on something that's not going to accomplish what they say it is,' Mayne said of Kennedy's initiatives. 'Most of these food dyes have been in our food supply for 100 years. … So why aren't they driving toward reductions in things that do drive chronic disease rates?'

Gauteng High Court orders Meta to shut down child pornographic accounts on Instagram and WhatsApp

Meta was ordered by the court to shut down child pornographic accounts. Image: File While the Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg, on Monday evening ordered Meta to shut down several anonymous Instagram accounts and WhatsApp channels, which are distributing explicit child pornography depicting South African school children, this has not yet been done by early Tuesday afternoon. Judge Mudunwazi Makamu also ruled that Meta had to, before noon on Tuesday, furnish The Digital Law Company (DLC) with all information in its possession pertaining to the creator(s) of the WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles listed in the urgent application. Rorke Wilson of The Digital Law Company on Tuesday said as the matter was heard on Monday evening, the deadline for Meta to shut down the accounts and channels was set to be midnight on Monday. 'However, Meta has not complied with any of the demands and all the deadlines have passed,' Wilson said, adding that they are now contemplating next steps. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad Loading The Digital Law Company turned to court on an extremely urgent basis, which was not opposed, when it became aware of the explicit content involving children on Instagram and WhatsApp. Emma Sadleir Berkowitz, social media law expert and the founder of The Digital Law Company , said in an affidavit that DLC was made aware of some social media accounts depicting shocking material relating to children on Friday. Wilson, meanwhile, had already been dealing with complaints from victims depicted on three other platforms the day before, which related to pupils of schools in Pretoria and Centurion. Upon investigation, the shocking nature of these posts became clear, as they involve the mass distribution of unlawful material involving children to large unidentified audiences who are members of so-called WhatsApp 'community channels', as well as Instagram profiles, Sadleir said. 'The content consists of explicit pornographic images and videos depicting children. The images and videos are often accompanied by other information relating to the individual child depicted, including their name, grade, school, as well as lewd or otherwise offensive descriptions relating to the individual's purported behaviour,' she stated in her affidavit. The material is sourced from the community by sharing links to an anonymous uploading service. Sadleir said that the creator and operator of the Instagram profiles and WhatsApp channels appears to be the same person, using many aliases. From time to time, it appears that Meta administrators will delete or block some of the pages and channels. However, not long after, the same page or channel becomes active again, or another channel crops up replicating the previous one, she explained. These disturbing postings include graphic child pornography and allegations of children being HIV positive – all while identifying children and schools. DLC, however, rushed to court late on Monday when a live WhatsApp channel with more than 11,000 followers threatened to publish pornographic material as well as the private information of children at 8pm on Monday (July 14). Sadleir said a letter of demand was sent to Meta and its officials, requiring that they delete the channels and profiles, and provide DLC with information that will assist in identifying the perpetrator. 'Receipt has been acknowledged, but no meaningful action has been taken,' she said. 'At this stage, it is impossible to identify exactly which children will be affected by the anticipated upload at 20h00, but given the tenor of the message shared by the anonymous user – the harmful effects will be widespread and irreparable,' she told the court. She also told the court that DLC has received reports that girls are being placed on suicide watch after being featured on the channels. 'If we are furnished with the information of the user behind these Instagram and WhatsApp accounts, it will enable us to take appropriate legal steps, such as obtaining a protection order or interdict against this individual,' Sadleir said. As the matter was unopposed, Meta did not file any opposing papers.

Weekend rescues in the Western Cape: Hikers saved from dangerous conditions

A WSAR helicopter team hoists an injured hiker from Lion's Head after she slipped and broke her leg on Saturday. Image: WSAR /Facebook A series of dramatic rescues unfolded across the Western Cape this past weekend as Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) teams raced to save hikers stranded by swollen rivers, injured on popular trails, and lost overnight in the mountains. 'Time is a critical factor in any emergency, and calling the correct number ensures a faster, more efficient response that can make a significant difference to the outcome,' said WSAR spokesperson David Nel. On Saturday morning, three hikers were left stranded in the Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area above Porterville when heavy rain turned a river crossing into a dangerous obstacle. Next Stay Close ✕ The group, who had planned to finish their hike on Thursday, became trapped and eventually contacted family to explain the delay. When they still hadn't returned by Saturday, they were reported missing. Before a major ground search was launched, they confirmed they were safe. Later that day, a 52-year-old woman slipped while descending Lion's Head and badly injured her leg. Quick-thinking members of the Bellville Voetslaanklub, who had recently attended a WSAR safety presentation, immediately provided the correct emergency number to her daughter. A helicopter rescue team was swiftly dispatched, and the woman was airlifted to hospital after being stabilised on the mountain. On Sunday morning, a 73-year-old hiker fell and struck her head on the Contour Path above Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. She was found to be stable and was assisted safely down the trail. In the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve, four young hikers aged 19 to 29 lost their way after taking an old, disused trail and were forced to spend a freezing night in the mountains. Early on Sunday, they managed to get cellphone reception and called for help. CapeNature rangers were dispatched and successfully guided the exhausted but unharmed hikers back to safety. Reflecting on the weekend's events, Nel said; 'We're truly grateful to all the rescue team members who respond so willingly. Their ongoing commitment and readiness to assist, often in tough conditions, makes a real difference and is deeply appreciated.' 'Our thoughts are with the two injured hikers, and we wish them both a smooth and full recovery,' he added. Nel urged all hikers to call without hesitation. 'At times people delay calling because they're worried about the cost of being rescued, but there's no charge for wilderness rescue in the Western Cape.' 'It costs nothing to call, but waiting could cost everything, 021 937 0300,' he said. Get your news on the go, click here to join the Cape Argus News WhatsApp channel. Cape Argus

BJP's Anurag Thakur urges Himachal govt to take serious action on devastation by flash floods, heavy rains

Mandi (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 14 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anurag Thakur on Monday urged the Congress-led Himachal Pradesh government to look into the devastation occurred to flash floods and heavy rainfall in Thunag bazaar area of Mandi district with 'seriousness.' Speaking to ANI, Thakur pointed that a mass destruction has been occurred in the area and it will cost in lakhs for people to rebuild their shops and homes. The BJP MP said, 'When you come here, you will see what a natural disaster looks like... There are many people here whose homes have been destroyed and shops devastated. In Thunag's market, where the mud was up to 12 feet high, the damage runs into lakhs. Now, people have to spend thousands to clear the mud, and setting up their shops again will cost them lakhs more. The compensation, however, is Rs 2500. What will happen in Rs 2500?' 'I urge the state government should look into this matter with great seriousness... I feel that government employees and officials need to step up their efforts... We do not want to play politics on this issue...' he added. Thunag in Mandi district is severely affected by the torrential rains and flash floods on the night of June 30 and July 1. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for six districts of Himachal Pradesh, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days, while also cautioning about continued rain activity across the state till July 20. According to Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, moderate rainfall was recorded in the past 24 hours in districts including Shimla, Sirmaur, Kullu, and Mandi. 'For July 14 and 15, we expect light to moderate rainfall in most mid-hill and low-hill districts. However, Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur districts are under Orange Alert for today due to the likelihood of heavy to heavy rainfall, and this activity will continue tomorrow as well,' Sharma said. He further informed that for July 15, districts including Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur have been put under Orange Alert for very heavy rainfall, while Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and Kullu districts may witness isolated heavy rain for which a Yellow Alert has been issued. 'This spell of active monsoon is expected to continue from July 16 to July 20, during which Una, Kangra, Mandi, Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur districts may receive heavy rainfall at isolated places,' said Sharma. Discussing the seasonal rainfall trends, Sharma noted that there is an increase in monsoon rainfall above the normal. Himachal Pradesh continues to face a grim monsoon season, with the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) confirming a total of 98 fatalities between June 20 and July 13, 2025, across the state. Of these, 57 deaths have been caused by rain-related disasters like landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts, while 41 people have lost their lives in road accidents, as per the latest situation report issued at 10 am on Monday. In addition to the human toll, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reported widespread damage to essential public utilities, 208 roads remain blocked, including one national highway (NH-21 from Mandi to Kullu). And 139 Distribution Transformers (DTRs) have been disrupted and 745 water supply schemes are currently affected due to heavy rains and related damage. As per the Cumulative Loss Report released by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), among the rain-related fatalities, 15 people died due to cloudbursts, 9 by drowning, 8 in flash floods, 4 due to snake bites, 1 each from a landslide and fire, and 19 others due to electrocution, falls, or other reasons. No deaths were reported due to lightning. The worst-affected district is Mandi, which alone accounts for 21 of these rain-related deaths, along with 27 missing persons and extensive damage to property. (ANI)
