Limited-Edition Flavor Available at Participating Locations Starting June 3 YOUNGSTOWN, OH, UNITED STATES, June 2, 2025 / / -- This year marks a sweet milestone for Handel's Ice Cream, as the iconic brand celebrates its 80th anniversary of scooping up joy. To kick off summer in a nostalgic style, Handel's is unveiling its newest limited-time flavor, Frosted Animal Cookie. The flavor is a playful twist on a classic treat that's sure to spark childhood memories, featuring a cake flavored ice cream base with a vanilla frosting ripple and frosted animal cookies mixed in. Guests can scoop up this limited-time flavor starting June 3 at participating locations while supplies last. 'Frosted Animal Cookie takes a beloved childhood treat and transforms it into a scoop that's both playful and nostalgic,' said Hillary Frei, Chief Marketing Officer of Handel's Ice Cream. 'As we celebrate 80 years of Handel's, there's no better time to share a joyful flavor that captures the spirit of summer and brings out the kid in all of us.' The idea for the new flavor came from franchisee Joseph Ogden, who owns and operates the Thousand Oaks and Oxnard locations in California. After seeing his brother, niece and her husband successfully open several Handel's shops in Utah, Ogden was inspired to open his own stores in Northern Los Angeles. During his training in Ohio, he pitched the concept for Frosted Animal Cookie, inspired by his childhood field trips to the zoo and the frosted cookies his grandmother used to share with him. 'I wanted to create something that felt like a bite of childhood,' said Ogden. 'Frosted Animal Cookie is fun, colorful, and packed with nostalgic flavor. It reminds me of the cookies my grandma used to give me after a day at the zoo. I'm proud to see it come to life and be part of Handel's 80th anniversary celebration.' Handel's regularly showcases franchisee-submitted flavors, kicking off 2025 with Sticky Fingers and Raspberry Dream Cream. Frosted Animal Cookie continues that tradition of flavor-forward thinking and community spirit. Guests can enjoy the new flavor and other Handel's favorites in a dish, cone, or shake. For those looking to take some home, Handel's also offers its ice cream in pints at participating locations. 'Our franchisees are deeply passionate about the brand and love creating moments that stick with people,' added Frei. 'It's exciting to see their creativity come to life in flavors that fans can enjoy nationwide.' Youngstown Area Jewish Federation speaks out against Colorado mall ‘terror attack'

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation released a statement Sunday night in response to what the FBI is describing as a 'targeted terror attack' at an outdoor mall in Boulder, Colorado. According to the Associated Press, several people were injured and possibly burned, and a suspect was taken into custody after an attack at a popular pedestrian mall where demonstrators with a volunteer group called Run for Their Lives had gathered to raise awareness for Israeli hostages who remain in Gaza. The Associated Press said video from the scene showed a witness shouting, 'He's right there. He's throwing Molotov cocktails,' as a police officer with his gun advanced toward a bare-chested suspect with containers in each hand. The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation released this statement in response to the attack: The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation is horrified to learn of the brutal firebombing in Colorado during a march for Israeli hostages, especially on the evening of Shavout, a two-day Jewish holiday that commemorates the date when God gave the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai over 3,000 years ago. Our hearts go out to everyone involved and we pray for the quick recovery of those injured. We don't yet have all the details of what happened, though video footage of the suspect has emerged suggesting extreme Jewish hatred as a motive. We will keep our community up-to-date as we learn more. The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation The Associated Press contributed to this report.T Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Local Pentecostal church celebrates bishop's 15th pastoral anniversary and 60th birthday

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — It was a weekend of celebration for members of Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church in Youngstown. The church hosted a 15/60 celebration for Bishop Shawn Tyson on Saturday with a community service to honor his 15th pastoral anniversary and his 60th birthday. It also marks five years since the bishop was diagnosed with retroperitoneal fibrosis, being told he was in kidney failure and was scheduled to be put on dialysis. 'The saints prayed, and the next day, the nurse came in with these words, 'Wow, what a comeback,' and I said, 'What do you mean by that?' She said, 'Last night, [your] creatine level's 16.8. This morning, almost normal — 2.3,'' Tyson said. 'That was five years ago. I went from 100% kidney failure to 100% kidney function. Only God can do that.' He also said he believes God can help anyone with anything they're going through. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 40th anniversary of a massive tornado outbreak in Ohio, Pennsylvania

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — On the evening of May 31, 1985, a series of large and deadly tornadoes swept across northeastern and central Ohio, leaving wide paths of destruction. Victoria Piasecka, a Hilliard resident, was a high school student in Howland Township, Ohio, a little south of Warren, in May 1985. School had let out for the summer on that unseasonably warm, sunny afternoon. She and her friends were playing video games at her aunt's home when they heard an unfamiliar sound. Heading outside, a large tornado resembling a column of fire descended from a relatively bright sky without warning. 'It wasn't dark at the time,' said Piasecka. 'It was huge, and roofs going up, and just seeing stuff going up in the air, and we all ran inside after that.' She added that the scene moments afterwards was 'just devastating.' The tornado first touched down in Newton Falls, about 15 miles west of Niles, where the fire chief saved lives by climbing to the roof of the Municipal Building, where he spotted the funnel and alerted officials by walkie talkie to sound the town's tornado siren. The F3/F4 tornado intensified before plowing through the northern part of Niles, destroying a popular roller rink that would have been occupied with youngsters only a short time later in the evening. Columbus and central Ohio Weather Radar Hundreds of homes were destroyed by winds approaching 300 mph, and eight people died. The monster tornado continued east, weakening slightly as it passed north of Youngstown, killing two persons in Hubbard Township. The violent tornado blasted across Mercer County, Pennsylvania, killing seven more in Wheatland. In all, 18 lives were lost and 310 people were injured. Around the same time, a tornado touched down northwest of Johnstown and passed north of the Croton egg farm, traveling 29 miles before ending in the hills of southwestern Coshocton County. One person died just across the county line and 25 were injured. A number of homes and barns were heavily damaged, and trees were toppled along the path of the storm across northern Licking County. The tornado outbreak that began in the mid-afternoon in southeastern Ontario, Canada, where 12 people died, spread rapidly southeast across northeastern and central Ohio (11 direct deaths) and western and central Pennsylvania (65 deaths). Storm damages at the time were estimated in excess of $600 million. A total of 44 tornadoes were confirmed, including 12 in Ohio and 21 in Pennsylvania (including four that started in Ohio). Three tornadoes touched down in New York, one of which first landed in northwestern Pennsylvania. A recent update counted 14 tornadoes in Ontario. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
