Shoaib Malik and Shikhar Dhawan are playing in the World Championship of Legends in England. Photo: AFP/file The much-anticipated fourth match of the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 between arch-rivals India and Pakistan, scheduled for Sunday at Edgbaston, has officially been called off. The announcement was made through a statement shared on the official social media handle of the WCL, confirming the cancellation of the marquee fixture. "We at WCL have always cherished and loved cricket, and our only aim has been to give fans some good, happy moments," the statement read. "After hearing the news that the Pakistan hockey team will be coming to India this year, and seeing recent India vs Pakistan volleyball and other inter-nation fixtures, we thought of continuing with the India vs Pakistan match at WCL — just to create some happy memories for people around the globe." "However, we have decided to call off the India vs Pakistan match," the statement added. "We sincerely apologise for hurting sentiments and hope people will understand that all we ever wanted was to bring a few happy moments to the fans." Before the official announcement, reports emerged that five India cricketers have set a condition ahead of their clash against Pakistan, stating they will not participate if former all-rounder Shahid Afridi is included in the squad or even enters the stadium premises. According to sources, former Indian all-rounders Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, and Suresh Raina, along with veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh and ex-opener Shikhar Dhawan, have raised strong objections to Afridi's presence and have formally conveyed their stance to the tournament organisers. Indian media reports further claim that Harbhajan Singh and Yusuf Pathan have already withdrawn from the match, citing political tensions and public sentiment. Additionally, Shikhar Dhawan had engaged in verbal spats on social media with the former Pakistan captain over his previous anti-India remarks. Dhawan confirmed his withdrawal through a story shared on his Instagram feed. It is pertinent to mention that the Green Shirts, led by Mohammad Hafeez, won the WCL 2025 opener against the England Champions by a narrow margin of five runs. Chasing 161, England were restricted to 155-3 in 20 overs, courtesy of a tight final over by Sohail Khan, who successfully defended 16 runs and conceded only 10 to secure the victory for his side. Pakistan Champions squad for WCL 2025: Mohammad Hafeez (c), Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal, Sharjeel Khan, Fawad Alam, Imad Wasim, Wahab Riaz, Sohail Tanveer, Asif Ali, Sohaib Maqsood, Umar Amin, Rumman Raees, Amir Yamin and Sohail Khan. IND vs PAK: Harbhajan Singh, Pathan brothers pull out from WCL 2025 clash; match on verge of cancellation
The highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025, scheduled for July 20 at Edgbaston in Birmingham, is reportedly on the verge of cancellation. This follows significant backlash and the withdrawal of key Indian players, including Harbhajan Singh, Yusuf Pathan, and Irfan Pathan, due to public outrage over the recent Pahalgam terror attack. Harbhajan Singh, Yusuf Pathan, and Irfan Pathan have pulled out of the India vs Pakistan WCL match, according to a report by RevSportz with sources citing criticism from Indian fans, particularly after the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 civilian lives. The attack, attributed to the Resistance Front, an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba, sparked anger, especially as former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi, part of the Pakistan Champions squad, made controversial anti-India remarks. Fans criticized Indian players like Yuvraj Singh and Shikhar Dhawan for participating in the match. Reports suggest other players, such as Suresh Raina, may also withdraw, though no confirmation has been made. The Pahalgam attack intensified India-Pakistan tensions, with India launching Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan. Pakistan's retaliatory shelling and drone attacks were thwarted by India, but the incident deepened the diplomatic rift. Notably, the WCL, an independent tournament featuring retired cricketers, is not governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), limiting the BCCI's control over player participation. The India Champions squad, led by Yuvraj Singh, includes stars like Raina and Piyush Chawla, while Pakistan's team features Afridi, Mohammad Hafeez, and Shoaib Malik. The match, set for 9:00 PM IST, has drawn attention due to the historic rivalry and recent events. While no official cancellation has been confirmed, the withdrawal of key players and ongoing fan protests suggest the fixture is at risk. The controversy highlights the challenges of sports diplomacy amid political tensions, with fans questioning players' motives.

Harbhajan Singh, Yusuf Pathan Boycott WCL 2025 Match Against Pakistan: Sources
Harbhajan Singh and Yusuf Pathan pulled out of a World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 match against Pakistan on Sunday, according to sources. This match is supposed to be the first clash between any cricket team of the two nations after the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025 that claimed 26 lives. The participation of former India stars, some of whom are members of World Cup winning sides, against a Pakistan team created a furore on social media. While both cricketers have not officially declared that they are not playing, it is being perceived that the Pahalgam attack and what followed in the aftermath had a bearing in their decision. While Harbhajan is a Rajya Sabha member for Aam Aadmi Party, Yusuf is currently a Member of Parliament from the Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency for Trinamool Congress. Reports claimed that Irfan Pathan also opted out of the match, but nothing official has been confirmed. India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series for more than 10 years due to the political tensions between the two teams. Things got worse after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor as the relations between India and Pakistan worsened. In the past, the two teams faced each other in ICC tournaments but as of now, questions remain over whether that will continue to the norm. The WCL 2025 is a tournament featuring retired cricketers and it is being held in England. India Champions Squad: Yuvraj Singh, Shikhar Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu, Piyush Chawla, Stuart Binny, Varun Aaron, Vinay Kumar, Abhimanyu Mithun, Siddarth Kaul, Gurkeerat Singh Maan.

Harbhajan Singh, Pathan Brothers Pull Out Of WCL Game Vs Pakistan: Reports
Harbhajan Singh has withdrawn from the World Championship of Legends game against Pakistan amid to public backlash. Harbhajan Singh, Ifran Pathan and Yusuf Pathan have reportedly withdrawn their names from the upcoming World Championship of Legends (WCL) game against Pakistan, after facing severe public backlash. Multiple reports suggest that he has made the decision considering the sour political relations between the country after the Pahalgam attack. India and Pakistan don't play bilateral cricket against each other. There were calls to end all multi-national tournament meetings between the two, as well, after the Pahalgam attack and the ensuing cross-border escalation that saw several Indian lives lost. 'My heart goes out to family members of all those who lost their lives in the dastardly attack. This can't be forgiven," Harbhajan wrote at the time. The current head coach, Gautam Gambhir, was one of many who asked India to cut all ties, bilateral or not, with the neighbors. Whereas, the India Champions captain in WCL, Yuvraj Singh, Shikhar Dhawan and others engaged in social media wars with the likes of Shahid Afridi over their anti-India commentary. The same cricketers became the centre of public anger after it was revealed that Afridi was part of the Pakistani team. Some reports suggest that other Indian cricketers might pull out from the tournament, too. What is WCL and who owns it? The league is co-owned by rapper and artist Harshit Tomar and Bollywood star Ajay Devgan. The league's website mentions Tomar as the CEO, while both have been seen together in promotional events. India's WCL Squad Shikhar Dhawan, Robin Uthappa (WK), Ambati Rayudu, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh (C), Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Stuart Binny, Vinay Kumar, Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla, Siddarth Kaul, Abhimanyu Mithun and Varun Aaron Who are the other participants? The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) doesn't allow contracted or active Indian men's cricketers to participate in such private leagues (except state-association ones) in the country or outside. Hence, these 'Legends' leagues — there are several of them — contract retired cricketers from all around the globe. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
