Azalina: Cabinet posts held under party mandate, not personal capacity
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has emphasised that Cabinet positions are held under the mandate of the party, not in a personal capacity, following Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz's departure from the party. "Although the Unity Council is chaired by the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), each appointed minister represents their respective party in an official capacity," said information chief Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said in a statement. She added that Umno remains committed to serving in the government and will continue to uphold the people's trust. "Accordingly, the Umno Legal Bureau has been tasked with reviewing the implications of the Anti-Party Hopping Act, including the status of a senator, to ensure that all subsequent actions are in line with the legal framework," she added. Azalina also called on members and supporters to remain focused on national development and the party's struggle, despite changes in individual political affiliations. Yesterday (May 31), Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was unethical for any party within the unity government to accept membership applications from former leaders or members of its allies. The deputy prime minister, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, said he was not surprised by Tengku Zafrul's announcement to quit Umno and join PKR, as they had discussed the matter during a parliamentary session three months ago. Meanwhile, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has urged party members and supporters to remain calm, focused, and united following Tengku Zafrul's decision to leave the party for PKR.

Give me space to focus on haj, says Zafrul
SEPANG: Days after resigning from Umno, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz (pic) is requesting 'space' from the public, as he will be performing haj. 'I'm requesting that I be given space to focus on my haj pilgrimage, and I also request prayers for myself, my wife and my family there. 'I would like to apologise to all if I have offended anyone. God willing, I will pray for the prosperity of the nation and the betterment of all Malaysians when I am at the Holy Land,' said Tengku Zafrul when met by reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday. Tengku Zafrul declined to comment on calls for him to resign as Investment, Trade and Industry Minister. 'No comment. I want to focus on haj and my family. I will leave this to the Prime Minister,' he said. Tengku Zafrul also reiterated that he had thought deeply about his decision to resign, and he was not forced by anyone to do so. 'Thank you once again to the Umno president and all Umno members who have supported me during my time in the party,' he added. Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh had said Tengku Zafrul should resign as minister following his departure from Umno. On Friday, Tengku Zafrul said he was resigning as Umno supreme council member, Kota Raja division leader and as a party member. He also said he would apply to join PKR as a member. Tengku Zafrul had quit as Selangor Umno treasurer in April last year, and speculation has been rife since last year that he would leave and join PKR.

PKR yet to discuss Tengku Zafrul's resignation with Umno
KUALA LUMPUR: PKR has not yet held discussions with its unity government partner, Umno, regarding the resignation of Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Its president and Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said the party respects Tengku Zafrul's decision and will discuss with Umno on the next steps. "Tengku Zafrul is a minister who has carried out his duty well. Many of our investments, worth hundreds of billions, have been managed through his efforts via Matrade, the ministry, and the current government. "As for his decision to apply (to join PKR), we have not reached that stage yet. Let him complete his Haj first. Of course, for PKR, we must discuss the matter with our friends in the unity government and consider it carefully," he said when met at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (KLIBF) 2025 today.

Tengku Zafrul thanks Umno comrades, affirms decision to join PKR
Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz SEPANG (June 1): Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz today expressed his appreciation to his comrades in Umno, but affirmed his decision to move to Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). Speaking to Bernama here, he stressed that his decision to leave Umno and resolve to join PKR was made after deep consideration and entirely of his own volition, without coercion or influence from any party. 'This was not an easy decision, but I have thought it through carefully. I appreciate those who respect my right as an individual to choose my political path. 'I would like to thank the Umno president (Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi), as well as friends and Umno members who have helped, supported, and encouraged me throughout my time in the party,' he said when met at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport before departing for the Holy Land to perform the Haj. He also asked to be given space to fully focus on the pilgrimage with his family, while apologising for any shortcomings with various parties. 'God willing, I will pray for the well-being of the country and the prosperity of all Malaysians while I am in the Holy Land,' he added. When asked about calls from certain quarters for him to resign as minister, given the post was allocated under Umno's quota, Tengku Zafrul said: 'I would like to focus on my pilgrimage, and I leave the matter entirely to the wisdom of the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim).' Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as an Umno Supreme Council Member, Umno Kota Raja Division Chief, and an Umno member to join PKR. His decision, however, has drawn various reactions, including from Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, who urged that Umno's quota of seven ministerial posts be reinstated following Tengku Zafrul's resignation from the party. Ahmad Zahid confirmed today that Umno executive secretary Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan had received the official resignation letter from Tengku Zafrul. However, PKR secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh said earlier today that the party had yet to receive any official membership application from Tengku Zafrul. – Bernama Parti Keadilan Rakyat politics Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz Umno

Nothing 'personal' about Zafrul's party switch
COMMENT | I find it amusing that some politicians and commentators take Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz's announced party-switching from Umno to PKR so 'personal', with so much emotion invested. I hope those Malaysians who have felt confused and disillusioned by national politics with the dramas in the past weeks can feel less emotionally disturbed when they can see what these politicians and commentators have left unsaid. The elephant in the room is straightforward: Zafrul wants to...
