Romelu Lukaku's injury setback could trigger major Man United exit

Romelu Lukaku's injury setback could trigger major Man United exit originally appeared on The Sporting News Manchester United kicked off their new Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday. While the Red Devils delivered a pretty good game despite the defeat, the most shocking part of the game was when Ruben Amorim announced the lineup without a recognized striker with Mason Mount leading the lines on paper. Fans were surprised that both Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee were on the bench questioning the two strikers' fitness and the latter's future at Old Trafford. According to recent reports via Tuttosport, Napoli are preparing to launch a bid for Zirkzee following Romelu Lukaku's injury that will keep him out of action until November this year. The Dutchman reportedly remains the top candidate to replace Lukaku mainly due to his ability to also slot in on the flanks. Apart from Zirkzee, Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta, AS Roma's Artem Dobvyk, and Leece's Nikola Krstovic form the shortlist made by Napoli to replace their main man upfront. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp As per latest reports from Italy, it is believed that Zirkzee has emerged as the top priority for Conte. Will Man United's Zirkzee move to Serie A? Zirkzee has missed the entirety of the preseason courtesy an injury that he picked up in April in Man United's 4-1 defeat against Newcastle. Getty Images The Netherlands international was an unused substitute for Amorim on Sunday as they fell short against Arsenal. With the signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbuemo and Sesko, Zirzkee has fallen down the pecking order and with Rasmus Hojlund told to leave, Zirkzee is seen as a fallback option for Amorim. The 24-year-old appeared in 49 matches last season for United and returned with seven goals and two assists while starting in only 14 out of 32 Premier League games. Therefore, a move to Napoli looks extremely viable for the Dutchman, who is expected to get more chances in Lukaku's absence following a high-grade muscle injury on his left thigh. The Belgian may miss action for at least three months, allowing Zirkzee to be the main man for the reigning Serie A champions. Also, considering Zirkzee had a great experience at Bologna before moving to Manchester United mean that the youngster is well accustomed with the pace of the league and could be an immediate fix for Conte. Man Utd star Joshua Zirkzee reacts to Benjamin Sesko and Ollie Watkins rumours

Joshua Zirkzee says he is 'not worried' and welcomes the prospect of added competition at Manchester United as the club look to bring in a new striker this summer. The Red Devils have bolstered their attack with the addition of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in the transfer market, with the duo arriving at the Theatre of Dreams for a combined fee of around £125million. But United are determined to further strengthen by signing an out-and-out centre-forward capable of scoring the goals Ruben Amorim's side so badly lacked last season, when the club finished with their worst-ever Premier League points tally. Viktor Gyokeres had been identified as United's number one target on the back of another exceptional campaign in Portuguese football with Sporting, in which he scored 54 goals in 52 games. But United were forced to concede defeat as Arsenal struck a deal to sign the prolific Swede and Old Trafford bosses have reportedly whittled down their shortlist to just two names: RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins. It's understood Leipzig could be prepared to do business for Sesko should they receive an offer of around £70m, while Watkins, the far cheaper option, is said to be available for between £40m-£45m. The ongoing search for a striker raises serious questions over the future of both Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, who managed just seven goals between them last term. But Zirkzee insists the addition of more quality up front can only be healthy for United's prospects ahead of the new campaign, with Amorim's men looking to drastically improve on their wretched showing last term. 'I think it's part of being at this club,' the Dutchman said. 'To be honest, I don't read the news but if another striker were to come I guess it's only good competition so I'm not really worried. 'Everything is for the team, there's no selfishness here, that's not my mantra. If it were to help the team then great.' Zirkzee admits there is major room for improvement in his game when it comes to finding the back of the net, but simply winning more games be the priority for United next season. 'I don't think I've shown my best form,' he added. 'I think I was on my way towards it [before his injury], but I think there's improvement every day for all of us. '[Amorim] wants goals so that's what I have to work on. That's what it all comes down to. 'I'm a different profile but in the end if you're up top you're supposed to score goals, I'm not going to take that fact away. But the most important thing is that we win so if Bruno scores 60 goals and we win all the games that's fine. More Trending Zirkzee is currently with Amorim's squad on the club's pre-season tour of the United States, but missed the side's 2-1 defeat of West Ham due to a 'small injury'. The Netherlands forward reassured fans that he was working his way back to full fitness, though, with the hamstring problem not thought to be serious. He explained: 'I've got a small injury, but it shouldn't take too long to recover now,' he said. 'I've got great physios working with me every day. It's a small injury, not a serious problem.' Joshua Zirkzee makes feelings clear on Man Utd role amid new striker search

Manchester United are expected to try and add another No 9 to their squad before the new season but Joshua Zirkzee is ready to fight for a spot in Ruben Amorim's team Joshua Zirkzee has vowed to fight for his place and prove his worth for Manchester United – despite their search for a new striker. ‌ Zirkzee endured a difficult debut season at United, following his £36.5million move from Bologna, scoring just seven goals from 49 appearances. United are pushing to sign a new striker, with Aston Villa 's Ollie Watkins their top target, and have already signed two forwards this summer in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. ‌ But Holland forward Zirkzee said he welcomes the competition from new arrivals and said it can help bring out the best in him and his fellow attackers. ‌ 'I'm very confident, everyone's very confident,' said Zirkzee. 'We've got competition, so whichever position the coach needs me is the position I'll play – if that's as a No.10 or a striker, it's no different. 'The coach knows me well and knows exactly what to do and I've got 100 percent trust in the coach so I'm not worried about that. 'It's part of being at this club [competition]. If another striker were to come, I guess it's only good competition, so I'm not really worried. 'They [Cunha and Mbeumo ] are two great players. We've seen that in training and we've seen that last season as well. We're for the team and that's what we're all about. We just want the team to be good. 'Everything is for the team, there's no selfishness here, that's not my mantra. If it were to help the team, then great. I'm not here to decide what's fair and unfair, I just know that me and Rasmus [Hojlund] can do better and have to do better. ‌ 'The manager wants goals, so that's what I have to work on. That's what it all comes down to. In the end, if you're up top, you're supposed to score goals. I'm not going to take that fact away.' Zirkzee's lowest point last season came when he was booed by his own fans at Old Trafford in January when he was subbed after 33 minutes with United trailing 2-0 to Newcastle. ‌ He headed straight down the tunnel, visibly upset, but returned to the bench, and revealed how the support of his team-mates helped him through the ordeal. 'The guys are always there for me,' said Zirkzee. 'Bruno [Fernandes], of course, is the captain. We've got a great group and we're all there for each other, so every individual wants the best for all of us. In that case, I can lean on a lot of guys in the team.' ‌ Zirkzee missed United's US tour-opening 2-1 win over West Ham because of injury and said: 'It's a small injury, not a serious problem. 'It's pre-season. It's not like last season, when I pushed myself to be there for the Europa League final. Now I just want to be there for the start of the season.'
