Ben Brown stars as the Cubs blank the Reds 2-0 for a 1-hit shutout
CHICAGO (AP) — Drew Pomeranz, Ben Brown, Brad Keller and Daniel Palencia combined on a one-hitter, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 2-0 on Saturday. Chicago used Pomeranz as an opener in front of Brown, and the strategy worked on a cool, blustery afternoon at Wrigley Field. Pomeranz pitched a 1-2-3 first before Brown struck out nine in six dominant innings for the NL Central leaders. The Cubs scored their two runs in the eighth. Seiya Suzuki's flyball to right off Graham Ashcraft (3-4) was misplayed by Will Benson, and it landed in fair territory for an RBI double. Dansby Swanson drove in Kyle Tucker when he beat out a grounder to shortstop Elly De La Cruz for a two-out infield single. Keller (2-0) worked the eighth and Palencia handled the ninth for his fifth save. It was Chicago's sixth shutout of the season. Cincinnati wasted a sharp performance by Nick Lodolo, who pitched six innings of five-hit ball. The 6-foot-6 Brown retired 14 of his first 15 batters before TJ Friedl singled with two out in the sixth for Cincinnati's only hit of the game. Brown had a 9.90 ERA in the first inning over his first 10 starts of the season. He was tagged for eight runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings in his previous start Sunday at Cincinnati. Key stat It was Pomeranz's first start since Aug. 7, 2019, for Milwaukee at Pittsburgh. Left-hander Génesis Cabrera agrees to 1-year deal with the Cubs
The Chicago Cubs agreed to a one-year contract with former New York Mets left-hander Génesis Cabrera on Thursday and designated right-hander Brooks Kriske for assignment. Cabrera, 28, had a 3.52 ERA and threw seven strikeouts across 7 2/3 innings and seven games of relief for the Mets this year. He was designated for assignment on Saturday, refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Syracuse and became a free agent. Cabrera, who is from the Dominican Republic, also had has stints with the St. Louis Cardinals and the Toronto Blue Jays, is 17-14 with a 3.88 ERA in seven major league seasons. Kriske pitched two scoreless innings in his lone appearance this season for the NL Central-leadig Cubs. ___

Crow-Armstrong homers and Boyd pitches Cubs to 2-1 win over Rockies
CHICAGO (AP) — Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his 15th home run, Matthew Boyd tossed six innings of four-hit ball and the Chicago Cubs edged the Colorado Rockies 2-1 on Wednesday night for their fourth straight win. Seiya Suzuki doubled in a run and rookie Matt Shaw had two hits for the NL Central leaders, who have won 10 of 12. Boyd (5-2) allowed just an unearned run while striking out eight and walking none. Three relievers followed, with Daniel Palencia pitching a perfect ninth for his fourth save. Tyler Freeman had a sacrifice fly for the Rockies, who lost their fifth straight and fell to 9-47 — the worst record in the majors. Orlando Arcia, who signed with Colorado earlier in the day, singled in his first two at-bats with his new team. Arcia was released by Atlanta on Sunday after batting .194 in 14 games with the Braves. Tanner Gordon (1-2) permitted two runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings for the Rockies. Boyd retired 13 of his first 14 batters. Arcia singled leading off the third. Chicago jumped ahead 1-0 in the first on Suzuki's double to the left-center wall. Crow-Armstrong made it 2-0 in the fourth when he golfed a low curveball down the right-field line. Key moment Boyd got through a shaky sixth and exited ahead 2-1. Chicago led 2-0 when Mickey Moniak led off with a single. Jordan Beck followed with a drive to left that Ian Happ caught at the wall. Moniak advanced to third on Boyd's wild pickoff attempt and scored on Freeman's sac fly, caught by Crow-Armstrong against the center-field wall. Key stat Shaw is 13 for 34 (.382) since being recalled from Triple-A Iowa on May 20. ___

Ian Happ homers as the Cubs beat the sloppy Giants 9-2
CHICAGO (AP) — Ian Happ homered and drove in three runs, helping Matthew Boyd and the Chicago Cubs beat the sloppy San Francisco Giants 9-2 on Monday night. Carson Kelly also went deep, sparking Chicago's five-run sixth inning with a leadoff drive for his eighth homer. Happ added a sacrifice fly and Seiya Suzuki singled in two more runs in the decisive outburst. Boyd (3-2) pitched six innings of two-run ball as the NL Central leaders won for the fourth time in five games. The left-hander struck out seven and walked none. San Francisco shortstop Willy Adames and five-time Gold Glove third baseman Matt Chapman each committed two errors, contributing to six unearned runs for Chicago in the opener of a three-game set. Luis Matos hit a tying two-run homer for the Giants in the fourth, but the Cubs responded with two runs in the bottom half. Landen Roupp (2-3) struck out the first two batters before Pete Crow-Armstrong reached on an error on Chapman. Nico Hoerner then singled and swiped second ahead of Dansby Swanson's two-run single to left. Swanson had three hits and scored twice. He is batting .462 (12 for 26) during a seven-game hitting streak. Up next Justin Verlander (0-2, 4.38 ERA) starts for San Francisco on Tuesday, and Colin Rea (2-0, 1.46 ERA) pitches for Chicago. ___
