This victory marks Pyramids FC as the fourth Egyptian club to win Africa's premier club competition. Jun 01, 2025 Egypt's Pyramids FC have clinched their first CAF Champions League title, defeating South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns 2–1 in Cairo to secure a 3–2 aggregate victory. The final was held at the 30 June Stadium, with goals from Fiston Mayele and Ahmed Samy sealing the win. This victory marks Pyramids FC as the fourth Egyptian club to win Africa's premier club competition, joining the ranks of Al Ahly, Zamalek and Ismaily. Founded in 2008, Pyramids FC has seen rapid growth following major investments since 2018, including backing from Emirati owner Salem Al Shamsi and earlier Saudi involvement. With a focus on private funding and high-profile signings, the club has positioned itself as one of the most financially ambitious teams in Egyptian football.

Breaking: Sundowns denied their second star by Fiston Mayele

Fiston Mayele scored yet another important goal as Pyramids defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 on aggregate to win the CAF Champions League on Sunday evening. The first leg ended 1-1 after the Egyptians scored a late goal in Pretoria. Coming into Sunday's second leg, Downs needed to win or force a scoring draw. Mayele opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after his shot beat Sundowns keeper Ronwen Williams. The Brazilians came close to equalising before half-time but Tashreeq Matthews missed a golden chance. In the second half, Pyramids made it 2-0 thanks to Ahmed Samy's goal. Sundowns pushed forward and were rewarded in the 75th minute when Iqraam Rayners pulled one back. The Egyptian giants defended with their lives to hold on for the victory and claim their first-ever CAF Champions League title. This was Sundowns' first final in nine years, having won the competition in 2016. After drawing 1-1 at home, some fans felt Masandawana may have lost the final when they conceded a late goal Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye told iDiski TV, that Sundowns were less confident going into the final 'Sundowns were supposed to win here (at home), so going away is not going to be easy. As I said when the Champions League started, Sundowns will never win it. They have quality players and they are a quality team but going to the game, they don't have the confidence to win away,' he said. 'Personally, I don't think they will trouble Pyramids. They will have their moment, but their coach…' The former winger said the match will likely finish 0-0 after extra time or end with Pyramids winning. 'I see the game finishing 0-0 or it will end 2-1. Sundowns will probably score but won't win the game. Mayele is going to score tomorrow (against Sundowns), he will score the winning goal.' The Brazilians produced a better performance in the second stanza following a poor showing in the opening 45 minutes. However, it was too little too late as the Egyptian club held on to win their first continental title. Mayele pounced on a mistake from Grant Kekana to give the home side the lead in the 24th minute. It was his ninth goal of the competition, as his golden touch against South African teams continued. He was the main architect in the 3-2 aggregate win over Orlando Pirates, having scored a brace in the second leg of the semi-final. Sundowns' attack was blunt for most of the first half, but they should have equalised on the stroke of half-time. Tashreeq Matthews was sent through on goal by Lucas Ribeiro, but he was denied by the outstretched leg of Ahmed El-Shenawy. Pyramids extended their lead in 11 minutes after restart via Ahmed Samy who headed home from a free-kick by Mohamed Chibi. Rayners gave Sundowns a glimmer of hope late in the second half when he rattled the back of the net after the home team failed to clear their lines from a diagonal cross played into the box. Miguel Cardoso, who came under scrutiny for his approach in the first leg, made just one change to the line-up, with Jayden Adams coming in for Arthur Sales. There was a surprise inclusion of experienced striker Lebo Mothiba on the bench. He was introduced in the 78th minute, but Downs couldn't find an equaliser in what was a tense finish to the game. Heading into the game, the two teams had only met three times prior to the second leg, with two matches ending in draws and Sundowns edging the other encounter. On that occasion, Teboho Mokoena scored the only goal of the match in 2023. Cardoso will come under heavy criticism following yet another below par performance and questionable selections. Themba Zwane was an unused substitute for a second successive match where his creativity would have come in handy. Pyramids Win First CAF Champions League Title With Win Over Sundowns

Pyramids FC have been crowned champions of Africa for the first time in their history after beating South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final. The Egyptian side sealed the title with a 3-2 aggregate win, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg. Moroccan duo Walid El Karti and Mohamed Chibi both started for Pyramids at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo. El Karti played the full 90 minutes, while Chibi was substituted in the 88th minute after providing an assist. Pyramids opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through Fiston Mayele, taking a 1-0 lead into the break. They doubled their advantage early in the second half when Ahmed Samy converted a pinpoint cross from Chibi in the 56th minute. Sundowns pulled one back in the 75th minute thanks to a goal from Iqraam Rayners, but it wasn't enough to stop Pyramids from claiming their maiden continental title. The Cairo-based club, which only joined the Egyptian Premier League in 2014, have now reached the summit of African football. Tags: CAF Champions LeagueMamelodi SundownsPyramids FCSouth Africa

Soccer Football - CAF Champions League - Final - Second Leg - Pyramids v Mamelodi Sundowns - 30 June Stadium, Cairo, Egypt - June 1, 2025 Pyramids' Fiston Mayele in action REUTERS/Amr Abdallah Dalsh CAIRO (Reuters) -Egypt's Pyramids claimed a deserved 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa for a 3-2 aggregate success and a first African Champions League title following the second leg of this year's final at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on Sunday. After the first leg in Pretoria finished 1-1, Fiston Mayele gave Pyramids the lead on 23 minutes when he profited from a Sundowns defensive error, before Ahmed Samy doubled the advantage on 56 minutes with a header from a free-kick. Sundowns pulled a goal back through Iqraam Rayners with 15 minutes remaining and one more would have given them victory in the tie on the away goals rule, but Pyramids held firm despite heavy pressure from the visitors. Pyramids are the fourth Egyptian side to lift the Champions League trophy after record 12-time winners Al Ahly, Zamalek and Ismaily, while 2016 champions Sundowns head to this month's Club World Cup in the United States on a low note.
