New video shows high-speed DUI pursuit crash near LAX, killing young driver
Newly released dashcam and security footage show the moment a high-speed DUI pursuit crashed near the Los Angeles International Airport, killing the juvenile driver. The Los Angeles Police Department released the full video on Monday, as well as further details from the investigation, revealing that the person killed was the driver and not a passenger, as officials previously reported. It happened early morning on March 28, police said, when the young, unidentified driver suspected of being under the influence was trying to evade officers. Traveling in a burgundy SUV, the driver and two other passengers were being chased by LAPD officers when they began driving at what was only specified as 'a high rate of speed.' Due to the dangerous speeds, officers disengaged from the pursuit, officials said. But, soon after, the SUV was driving westbound on Century Boulevard when the driver made the fatal mistake of running a red light. The SUV slammed into another car, described as a compact sedan, that was caught in the intersection while driving in the right-of-way, southbound on Sepulveda Boulevard. LAPD detailed that the crash caused the SUV to lose control and collide into a pole, 'causing fatal injuries to the juvenile driver.' Paramedics pronounced him dead before removing his body from the car. The two other occupants, identified only as a 19-year-old man from Los Angeles and a 22-year-old man from Hawthorne, ran from the scene but were arrested moments later by airport police officers. They were investigated and hospitalized for minor injuries. Officials said that the driver of the second vehicle also suffered minor injuries and was recovering at a local hospital. The juvenile driver's identity is pending notification of next-of-kin. Detectives are urging anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward with any information regarding this incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact South Traffic Division Detective Gerald Chavarria at 213-924-3621. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
