Russia says it has captured two villages in Ukraine, Ukraine reports heavy fighting
MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia's Defence Ministry said on Saturday its forces had captured two more villages in eastern Ukraine, including one in Dnipropetrovsk region where Moscow says its troops have begun to make advances. Ukrainian forces made no acknowledgement that the villages had changed hands, but reported heavy fighting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in an assessment of the situation along the 1,000-km (620-mile) front line, said the logistics hub of Pokrovsk remained the focal point of battles. He also said Ukrainian forces had recorded "successful actions" in Sumy region on Ukraine's northern border, where Russian forces have established a foothold in recent weeks. Reuters could not independently confirm battlefield accounts from either side. The front-line clashes were reported three days after the two sides held their third direct meeting in Turkey aimed at resolving the nearly 3-1/2-year-old war. Both sides reported progress in swaps of prisoners or the remains of war dead, but no breakthroughs were announced in terms of a ceasefire or a meeting of the two countries' leaders. Russia's military has been reporting nearly daily the capture of new villages in its slow advance westward. The Russian Defence Ministry said its forces had taken control of Zelenyi Hai in Donetsk region and Maliivka, a village just inside Dnipropetrovsk region. The ministry described Zelenyi Hai as "a major stronghold of Ukrainian formations in this section of the front (that) covered approaches to the administrative border of the Dnipropetrovsk region". Dnipropetrovsk is not among the five regions that Moscow claims as its own -- Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and the Crimean peninsula, annexed in 2014. Russia last month said its forces had crossed into Dnipropetrovsk region and now says it holds at least two villages. Ukraine's military has for weeks dismissed any notion that Russian troops hold territory in the region. The Ukrainian military's General Staff, in a late evening report, mentioned Zelenyi Hai as one of several frontline areas that had come under Russian attack 11 times over the past 24 hours. It said Maliivka was one of several villages where 10 Russian attacks had been halted. Zelenskiy, in his nightly video address, said Ukraine's top commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, had identified Pokrovsk as an area requiring "special attention" under constant attack. Superman Saving a Squirrel Was Cut Out of the Movie, but James Gunn Put It Back In
There are plenty of weird and unexpected moments in James Gunn's Superman, but one of the most unexpected has to be when he saves a squirrel in the middle of a giant battle. Not a human, not a group of animals, but a single, solitary squirrel. It speaks to the character's kindness and respect for all life in a fun, quirky way, but apparently not everyone liked it. 'It was probably the second- or third-most hotly debated moment in the movie,' Gunn said in a wide-ranging interview with Rolling Stone. 'Because we showed it to test audiences, and some people did not like the squirrel. They're like, 'Why the fuck is he saving a squirrel? Why is he taking time out, saving a squirrel?' There was a cut where I cut it out and I'm like, 'I really miss the squirrel. He's gotta save the squirrel.'' And so, Gunn put it back in. Especially because, if he lost it, the flow of the editing of the battle got messed up. 'In addition, there were also some geographic problems with where he ended up if I didn't have him fly over with the squirrel,' Gunn said. 'So I put the squirrel back in despite the protestations of some of my people on my crew.' Is Superman saving a squirrel extraneous? Possibly. Does it make sense? Absolutely. We know he loves animals from his attitude and interactions with Krypto. Plus, in a populated city like Metropolis, there aren't going to be many wild animals running around. But one that would certainly be there is a squirrel. And, don't forget, Gunn is the filmmaker who made a three-film Marvel series that centered around the origins of a talking raccoon. Russian forces take control of three Ukrainian villages across multiple regions, defence ministry says
MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russian troops have taken control of three villages in three different parts of the frontline running through Ukraine, the Defence Ministry said on Thursday. Official Ukrainian reports of activity along the 1,000-km (600-mile) front disputed part of the Russian account, particularly concerning a key village in the southeast. Reuters could not independently verify battlefield reports from either side. The Russian Defence Ministry report named the three captured settlements as Kamianske in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, Dehtiarne in northeastern Kharkiv region, and Popiv Yar in Donetsk region, the main theatre of Russian operations. Russian forces are engaged in a slow advance westward, mainly through Donetsk region, and Moscow announces the capture of new villages almost every day. Ukrainian military spokesperson Vladyslav Voloshyn told the media outlet that holding Kamianske, southeast of the region's main town of Zaporizhzhia, was important to keep that city safe from attack. But Kamianske had been all but flattened by long periods of fighting, he said. Ukrainian forces had moved out of it and successfully attacked Russian troops whenever small groups periodically ventured into it. "The Russians cannot go into the village and hold it," Voloshyn was quoted as saying. "There is not a single dwelling left intact, not a single wall left standing, nothing to hold, nothing to enable you to take cover." There was no acknowledgement from Ukraine that Popiv Yar had changed hands - the village lies northeast of Pokrovsk, for months a focal point of Russian attacks in Donetsk region. For at least a week, it has remained in the "grey zone" of uncertain control as reported by DeepState, a Ukrainian military blog based on open source accounts of the fighting. There was no news from Ukrainian officials of the situation at Dehtiarne. On Wednesday, Russia's military announced the capture of the village of Novohatske, southwest of Pokrovsk. Another Ukrainian military spokesperson, Viktor Trehubov, told public broadcaster Suspilne on Thursday that the village was in Russian hands. Moscow controls a little less than 20% of Ukrainian territory and says it has incorporated four regions - Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson into Russia, a move that Kyiv and most Western countries reject as illegal.
