Coast Guard Detroit helicopter rescues stranded boaters from Lake Erie island
Coast Guard Air Station Detroit reports it assisted in the rescue of three boaters early Thursday from Lake Erie's Middle Bass Island. The rescue involved three people who were on a 29-foot sailing vessel that ran aground. Coast Guard Station Marblehead sent one of its response boats and Coast Guard Sector Detroit sent its MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to the scene. A Coast Guard rescue swimmer reached the boaters to check on their circumstances. Then all three individuals were taken up in a rescue basket into the helicopter. Middle Bass Island is among the small but populated islands in the Ohio waters of Lake Erie, near South Bass Island and its tourist city of Put-in-Bay.

High pressure will keep South Florida's chance of rain low through the weekend
South Florida will wrap up the month of July with another scorcher. Thursday morning saw temperatures in the low to mid 80s. The humidity will be a little higher throughout the day and afternoon highs will climb to the low 90s, with "feels-like" temperatures in the triple-digits. A few showers and isolated storms will be possible in the afternoon but the bulk of the rain will be over the Everglades and on the West Coast due to the sea breeze. It's the second day of lobster mini-season which will wrap up at 11:59 p.m. There are no alerts or advisories for boaters. Winds will remain light out of the east/southeast at 5 knots. Over the Atlantic waters, seas will be 2 feet or less and over the Keys seas will remain around 1 foot. There are smooth conditions on the bays. For those headed to the beach, there is a low risk of rip currents. However, the UV index is extreme so don't forget the sunscreen. High pressure will continue to act like a heat dome as we kick off the month of August on Friday. It will keep the chance of rain low through the weekend. Highs stay in the low 90s and it will feel like the 100s when the humidity is factored in. Heat advisories may be issued by the National Weather Service. The chance of rain will increase in the early to middle part of next week.

Hotter, drier South Florida weekend as Saharan dust moves in
This is the final weekend of July and it's going to be a scorcher. Afternoon highs will be in the low 90s, but the "feels like" temperatures will be in the low triple-digits. Make sure to stay hydrated and try to stay in air conditioned places when possible to avoid heat exhaustion and heat illness. Friday got off to a warm, steamy start with temperatures in the low to mid 80s and heat indices in the 90s. A few showers will be possible on Friday as the breeze builds out of the southeast, but the chance of rain is low due to drier air and Saharan dust moving in. It will be hazy at times due to the dust. Those with respiratory conditions are urged to limit their time outside as the air quality is moderate for most of South Florida. There is a high risk of rip currents along South Florida's beaches due to the strong onshore breeze. It is not safe to go swimming in the ocean. The UV index is extreme so don't forget the sunblock. There are no alerts or advisories for boaters along the Atlantic waters. Small craft caution should exercise caution over the Keys' waters as it will turn choppy near shore. The sweltering heat sticks around on Saturday and Sunday as high pressure dominates the weather pattern. Highs will soar to the low 90s and it will feel like the 100s. The National Weather Service may issue heat advisories due to dangerous heat indices. Early next week the chance of rain will increase a bit with the potential for spotty showers Monday through Wednesday. Highs remain in the low 90s. In the tropics, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring a broad area of low pressure over the north-central Gulf which is currently producing an area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. There is a low potential (10% chance) of development while this disturbance moves generally west-northwestward across the northern Gulf. By the weekend, the system is likely to move inland over southeastern Texas or western Louisiana, ending its chances for development. Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall is possible for portions of the northern Gulf coast through the weekend.
