Vallejo woman arrested for alleged fake carjacking, insurance fraud scheme in Madera County
A Vallejo woman was arrested after allegedly faking a carjacking last week in Madera County as part of an insurance fraud scheme, authorities said. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the Madera County Sheriff's Office said that on May 23 at 8 a.m., dispatchers received a 911 call from a woman identified as Martha Gutierrez DeRomero. The 57-year-old DeRomero said she had been carjacked at a remote intersection north of Madera near county Fire Station 3. DeRomero told responding deputies that she was driving her white Chevrolet van packed with merchandise to sell at a local swap meet and she had pulled over to the side the road to adjust a shifting load. According to the post, she told deputies that two masked males approached and took her at knifepoint. DeRomero said the van contained about $60,000 in merchandise, which consisted of fitness clothing, waist trainers and supplements, the post said. After the description of the suspects and the van was issued to surrounding law enforcement agencies, deputies with the Merced County Sheriff's Office found the van on Sandy Mush Road in Merced. Following an investigation and follow-up interview with DeRomero, detectives determined that she and her boyfriend, 57-year-old Alfredo Ledezma of Madera, had staged the carjacking as part of an insurance fraud scheme, the Sheriff's Office said. The alleged stolen merchandise was later found in a storage facility in Merced. Martha Gutierrez DeRomero, van seen in abandoned in a field in Merced County Madera County Sheriff's Office DeRomero was booked into the Madera County Jail for felony insurance fraud, conspiracy, and filing a false police report. Ledezma also potentially faces charges of insurance fraud and conspiracy, the office said. "What began as a serious and concerning report of a violent carjacking quickly unraveled under careful investigation," said Madera County Sheriff Tyson Pogue in a prepared statement. "Attempting to exploit emergency services for personal gain is not only illegal, it diverts resources from those who truly need help. I'm proud of our team for seeing through the deception and holding those responsible accountable." Pogue told CBS 47 Fresno that deputies got DeRomero to admit to the scheme during interviews. "Her story just didn't make a whole lot of sense. So, when they start following up on these leads, essentially, you know, the dots didn't connect," Pogue told CBS 47. "They determined that she was probably not being truthful and ultimately got her to confess that she was lying about the incident." Pogue also told CBS 47 the initial report of a carjacking prompted an emergency response from all corners of the county. "It's extremely concerning, extremely upsetting that someone would be so selfish to the safety of others to drag those resources into an incident for something that, you know, some say they're just completely making up for insurance fraud," Pogue told CBS 47.

Baltimore rabbi assaulted in attempted carjacking in the Park Heights community
A 62-year-old rabbi was assaulted during an attempted carjacking on Saturday, May 24, in Baltimore's Park Heights neighborhood, prompting renewed concerns about public safety and antisemitic violence within the city's Jewish community. Rabbi Emanuel Goldfeiz was taking out the trash behind his home at the Park Towers West condominium when he was approached by two suspects, according to Baltimore police. The suspects punched him in the face in an apparent attempt to steal his vehicle. Baltimore City Councilman Isaac "Yitzy" Schleifer said the suspects ran away after Goldfeiz produced a legally owned firearm. "Until he pulled out a firearm that he legally owned, that got them off of him," Schleifer said. "His back is very sore. He got hit in the face, so he's still feeling it, like anybody would after being so violently assaulted." Medics treated Goldfeiz at the scene for minor injuries. The suspects remain at large, and police are continuing their investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Baltimore police. The attack on the rabbi comes amid a reported uptick in carjackings across Baltimore. Police data shows 23 reported carjackings in the past month, a slight increase from the same period last year. Safety concerns ramped up within Jewish communities Schleifer said the attack has intensified concerns in the local Jewish community, which has seen a rise in threats and violence nationwide. "It's coming at a tremendous cost to the community," Schleifer said. "They are increasing their security spending, whether it be for cameras, setting up secured doors, or other protective measures." Though police have not classified the assault as a hate crime, Schleifer stressed the importance of remaining vigilant. "You have to be aware of your surroundings, especially at night," Schleifer said. "It really is unfortunate because it shouldn't have to be that way." Shooting deaths of Israeli Embassy staffers On May 21, two staffers of the Israeli Embassy were shot and killed after attending an event at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. The event, put on by the American Jewish Committee (AJC), celebrated young Jewish leaders. Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim were identified as the shooting victims. Elias Rodriguez, a 30-year-old from Chicago, is facing two counts of first-degree murder. The shooting is being investigated as a hate crime and an "act of terrorism." Police presence is increasing to protect from hate crimes Maryland law enforcement has said it is stepping up patrols to protect from hate crimes. Baltimore County Police said it would increase presence and patrols around places of worship, community centers, and other sensitive areas, in Pikesville specifically, given the large Jewish community there. The Baltimore Police Department and the Howard County Police Department also said they would increase patrols and presence similarly.

Colorado man arrested, accused of kidnapping, sexual assault, more after nearly 30-mile chase
A Fort Collins man was arrested after allegedly leading deputies on a chase that spanned several Colorado communities. The chase stemmed from an alleged carjacking, kidnapping, and sexual assault of a woman. Shane McSwane, 28, of Fort Collins, is accused of carjacking a woman in Aurora late Sunday night and taking that car 140 miles south to Colorado City to rob a Circle K. The woman's mother called the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office and told dispatchers her daughter was kidnapped and that her cell phone's location could be tracked. A deputy on Interstate 25 saw the vehicle going northbound near Pueblo Boulevard and tried to stop McSwane, who turned around and fled southbound in a "dangerous high-speed pursuit" on I-25, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office, before entering Huerfano County, allegedly crossing the highway median several times. Huerfano County deputies deployed spike strips onto the highway, which popped the tires, but McSwane continued for a few more miles, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office, whose deputies eventually performed a PIT maneuver as Huerfano County deputies boxed the vehicle in. A map shows the route a kidnapping, robbery, and sexual assault suspect took while he allegedly committed a string of crimes down Colorado's Front Range. CBS Deputies stopped the car near Walsenburg and got McSwane out at gunpoint and taken into custody without further incident, according to the sheriff's office. The woman, who was uninjured, told deputies she was carjacked in Aurora about four hours earlier after McSwane allegedly forced himself into her car, threatened her, and, while driving, touched her inappropriately and made her touch him as well. She went on to tell investigators that McSwane threatened to shoot a gas station clerk in Colorado City if she didn't give him a lighter. That clerk was also uninjured. Shane McSwane Pueblo County Sheriff's Office McSwane now faces charges of second-degree kidnapping, two counts of aggravated robbery, unlawful sexual contact, second-degree motor vehicle theft, two counts of menacing with a deadly weapon, felony vehicular eluding, reckless driving, and driving under restraint and could face additional charges, the sheriff's office said. "I want to commend our deputies as well as the Huerfano County Sheriff's Office for their swift, professional, and courageous actions during this highly dangerous situation. Their decisive response saved this victim's life," Pueblo County Sheriff David J. Lucero said in a statement. "We are thankful this ended without harm to the victim and the public." McSwane was booked into the Pueblo County Jail and is due in court Tuesday afternoon. Court records show he has a criminal history going back to 2010 for charges including drugs, escape from custody, theft, domestic violence, public indecency, harassment, and more in Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, El Paso, Jefferson, Larimer, and now Pueblo counties.
