Skywatchers stunned: What was that bizarre white streak during the aurora?
credit: instagram/mikelewinski@flickr The American southwest skies burst into a spectacular cosmic display, leaving thousands of spectators mesmerized. On the night of Saturday, May 17, 2025, a once-in-a-lifetime, shocking spectacle of radiant green and purple auroras was observed across the entire expanse of the sky. An already rare phenomenon in itself was jolted by an unexplained, blinding white flash slicing abruptly across the sky. This ghostly-appearing, nearly otherworldly flash brightened the night with brilliant intensity, intriguing the sky observers and touching off a storm of conjecture. What was this oddly lovely streak? Around 11:30 p.m., a bright white streak was visible high up in the sky over Colorado and surrounding states. At first, individuals thought it might be an atmospheric occurrence called STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement), which typically is a purple or white ribbon blazing across the sky during powerful solar storms. But it was something else entirely. So what was it? Astronomer Jonathan McDowell verified that the white trail was a fuel dump from the chinese Zhuque-2E rocket's upper stage. Fired earlier the same evening from the Jiuquan Satellite launch facility in China. As the upper stage of the rocket flew over the U.S four corners country at an altitude of about 155 miles (250 km), it dropped a plume of exhaust that reflected the light, causing a bright contrail to be visible throughout the southwestern U.S. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 새로 나온 '실비보험' 최적가 가입추천! Photographers across the entire impacted region snapped excellent images of the display. Mike Lewinski, who was present in Crestone, Colorado, described, "The aurora was rippling low on the northern horizon when suddenly a brilliant streak of light, much like a rocket re-entry, appeared high in the sky and flowed down to the horizon. What was the public response? Clearly, a phenomenon and light as unusual as this will cause panic and commotion among the masses, particularly on social media websites, with a lot of users posting pictures and speculating as to what the white streak in the sky would be. Some believed that it could be a UFO, while others believed that maybe it was some new atmospheric phenomenon. Is this the new era's skywatching ? The breathtaking occurrences of May 17 will probably be forever seared into the memory of those who were lucky enough to see them, not only for the oddly lovely design but also for the dreamlike imposition of a man-made event upon one of nature's most spectacular spectacles. This moment is a breathtaking example of our time: an era in which the wonders of the universe and the universe can illuminate the sky simultaneously and breathtakingly.

Kim Soo Hyun fans sue YouTuber for defaming actor, deny claims of his sexual addiction to minors amid Kim Sae Ron controversy
Fans of actor Kim Soo Hyun have taken a firm stand against YouTuber Kwon Young Chan, filing a police complaint for defamation. They accuse Kwon of spreading false information about the actor's personal life, including serious allegations tied to the late Kim Sae Ron, during livestreams and YouTube broadcasts. Complaint filed with Seoul Seongbuk Police Station On May 8, attorney Yang Tae Young, representing the Kim Soo Hyun Fan Association, officially submitted the complaint at the Seoul Seongbuk Police Station. The group also turned in 56 instances of alleged defamatory statements made by Kwon between March and April 2025. False claims about Kim Soo Hyun's alleged relationship with Kim Sae Ron The complaint strongly refuted claims made by Kwon suggesting Kim Soo Hyun had a physical relationship with actress Kim Sae Ron when she was a minor. "The victim, Kim Soo Hyun, has never dated or had sexual relations with Kim Sae Ron when she was a minor, has never committed a crime against the deceased, and has never been found to have a sexual addiction to minors or to be a pedophile," his fans claimed. Kwon Young Chan accused of misleading the public The fan association claimed that Kwon introduced himself as a counselling expert and director of a celebrity suicide prevention group, using those titles to boost his credibility. He also claimed to have evidence, which he threatened to release to media outlets—further worsening the actor's public image without confirmation. Impact of defamation on Kim Soo Hyun's career and reputation The fan group further claimed that the unfounded accusations have caused significant social and financial harm to Kim Soo Hyun. "Due to the false allegations that were not confirmed, Kim Soo Hyun has suffered social and economic damage that isn't easy to recover from," it said. Kim Sae Ron's family's press conference sparks renewed backlash Adding to the controversy, an audio recording was released at a press conference involving Kim Sae Ron's family and Kim Se Ui of the Garo Sero Institute. The recording allegedly features Kim Sae Ron speaking about a relationship with Kim Soo Hyun. In the audio, she claimed that Kim Soo Hyun had sex with her when she was in 8th Grade. Beijing Stops Publishing "Hundreds Of Statistics" To Cover Up Economic Collapse
Two weeks ago, when we first reported that as a result of the ongoing Trump trade war with China, 'chinese factories are shutting down, laying off workers', we said that as a result of this war of attrition in which the outcome of every incremental clash and battle will be used just as aggressively for media propaganda, 'the fact that any marginal pain will be amplified as trade war weakness will mean that Beijing will do everything in its power to prevent the full extent of the shutdowns from being revealed.' Sure enough, fast forward to today when the WSJ reports that whereas 'not long ago, anyone could comb through a wide range of official data from China… then it started to disappear. ' Regular China-watchers know very well that when it comes to local 'data' reporting, China's fabrication and goalseeking skills are second to none, and even the US Bureau of Labor Statistics is a rank amateur compared to Beijing's National Bureau of Statistics, which tramples over actual econometric reporting with the glee of a bull in a, well, China shop. It's why nobody actually believes any of the propaganda released by Beijing, and instead independent, private (and very expensive) third-party services for data collection and analysis are used to measure accurately the current state of China's economy. So imagine how bad it must be when instead of simply making stuff up, China decides that the easier approach is simply to no longer report the fake data. The best example is surely the data on Chinese youth unemployment which hit a record 22% in the summer of 2023… at which China decided to simply stop reporting it altogether. In the US, bad data is just "seasonally" massaged and birth/deathed until it is +300,000. In China, they just stop reporting it.*CHINA TO STOP PUBLISH DATA FOR YOUTH JOBLESS RATE — zerohedge (@zerohedge) August 15, 2023 Curiously, China halted reports on its youth unemployment just weeks after we quoted Goldman China strategist Maggie Wei (full note available to professional subs), who said that 'Chinese youth unemployment rates tend to be higher than overall unemployment rates as this group appear particularly vulnerable to economic downcycles, likely due to a lack of experience.' In other words, when it comes to early indicators of economic collapse, this is it…. And more importantly, such an indicator would also telegraph to China's millions of unemployed young men and women that there are millions more like them, and that all they have to do to fix their plight, is to demand change in Beijing and stage a youth insurrection. Which, of course, is the single biggest nightmare for China's communist party. But it's not just youth unemployment: according to the WSJ, land sales measures, foreign investment data and countless other unemployment indicators have gone dark in recent years, while data on cremations and a business confidence index have been cut off. Even official soy sauce production reports are gone. In all, 'Chinese officials have stopped publishing hundreds of data points once used by researchers and investors', according to a Wall Street Journal analysis. In most cases, Chinese authorities haven't given any reason for ending or withholding data. But the missing numbers have come as the world's second biggest economy has 'stumbled under the weight of excessive debt, a crumbling real-estate market and other troubles, spurring heavy-handed efforts by authorities to control the narrative.' Or, precisely what we said when we warned in April that ' Beijing will do everything in its power to prevent the full extent of the shutdowns from being revealed.' China's National Bureau of Statistics stopped publishing some numbers related to unemployment in urban areas in recent years. After an anonymous user on the bureau's website asked why one of those data points had disappeared, the bureau said only that the ministry that provided it stopped sharing the data. Congressman: Trump's Trade Pressure on China Comes at Perfect Time
For decades, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has flouted international trade agreements with impunity. The world has never meaningfully responded, and America's domestic manufacturing interests have suffered. Despite what some headlines may say, President Donald Trump's vision to hold the CCP accountable for its misdeeds and defend our role in the global economy is critical for the future of our nation. The United States' service economy is attractive to global investment because of the dollar's reserve currency status, access to surplus capital and intellectual talent, and our business-friendly environment. These attributes are crucial to America's standing as the world's strongest and most important market. However, this success has redirected our attention away from our manufacturing capacities, ultimately endangering our national security. Although we cannot predict future belligerence, we must shore up our manufacturing vulnerabilities in preparation. For example, the Chinese military has rapidly built up its naval fleet to project greater power in the Indo-Pacific as it prepares to reclaim Taiwan and expand its sphere of influence. Despite the threat, shipbuilding capacity for the U.S. Navy is nowhere near sufficient to maintain our current fleet—let alone keep pace with China—due to years of neglect. In response, President Trump is taking aggressive action to restore our maritime industry. A chinese flag is seen in the financial district of Shanghai on April 7, 2025. Asian equities collapsed on a black Monday on April 7 for markets after China hammered the United States with its own hefty tariffs, ramping up a trade war many fear could spark a recession. More HECTOR RETAMAL / AFP/Getty Images As a physician, I am also gravely concerned about our reliance on China for life-saving drugs. While a mutually beneficial and fair trade relationship is worth cultivating, we simply cannot rely on an adversarial nation to be a trustworthy partner should any type of conflict emerge. In a now-deleted article published early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Xinhua, the official state news agency of the Chinese Communist Party, suggested restricting exports of masks—which the CCP later did—and pharmaceuticals to cripple the United States. This belies the notion that the CCP would be a reliable partner if the world ever faced calamity again. In a further testament to Beijing's desire to harm our national security, we are currently witnessing the CCP cut off exports of rare earth minerals necessary for medical products and high-tech devices. Our public policy should reflect the stark reality that China is willing to sabotage America to further its desire for world supremacy. We must incentivize greater domestic or nearshore sourcing and production of critical medical supplies, key starting materials, and active pharmaceutical ingredients—the building blocks of nearly all medicines. The CCP has made its imperial aspirations clear and is working, with its nefarious partners Russia and Iran, to achieve global dominance and supplant the United States and our Western allies as global leaders. President Trump's provocations to induce long-overdue negotiations with Beijing are necessary to help level the playing field. Prosperity for some Americans cannot come at the expense of others, and for too long the decline of our manufacturing towns has been tolerated as long as the stock market has gone up. China has for decades employed malicious trade practices that undermine the United States, our industrial capacity, and our intellectual property. American companies cannot compete fairly as long as Beijing subsidizes state-owned enterprises, forces technology transfer, and commits outright theft of intellectual property. President Trump is applying immense pressure to restructure our economy at a pivotal and opportune moment. Investment is fleeing China, the American public supports targeted action, and he doesn't have to worry about reelection, only America's well-being. The continued strength of the American economy in the 21st century will depend on defending our interests and thwarting Beijing's hegemonic behavior.
