College football recruiting reset: Fireworks for Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Alabama

The Fourth of July week is always a pivotal time in the recruiting world. Fresh off June official visits, recruits are ready to issue commitments, and it's when classes across the country begin to truly take shape ahead of football season beginning in the fall. Last week was no exception, with more than 150 recruits making a decision. But boy were there some fireworks in what was the most captivating recruiting week of the year to this point. From shocking decisions to some drama in the race for the top class, consider this your primer to anything you may have missed. Advertisement Let's get into it. Note: All rankings are from the 247Sports Composite. • No one had a better Fourth of July than Texas Tech and coach Joey McGuire, who landed five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo of Lake Ridge High School in Mansfield, Texas, in rather surprising fashion. Ojo is ranked No. 7 overall and the No. 2 offensive tackle in the Class of 2026. Just one day before the announcement, he wrote on social media that his finalists were Texas, Michigan, Ohio State and Florida, but he picked the Red Raiders on Friday with no indication Texas Tech was in the race. The Athletic reported Ojo is set to receive an annual compensation of $775,000 for three years from Tech's revenue-sharing pool, but there is a verbal agreement in place where the money could jump into the $5 million range depending on a potential increase in the revenue cap or schools' willingness to ignore the cap, as many have with NIL regulation. Should he sign with the Red Raiders in December, Ojo would become the highest-rated recruit in program history. Texas Tech also landed two four-stars last week in running back Ashton Rowden and cornerback Donovan Webb — both Texas natives — and is making some moves in the Class of 2027 as well. The Red Raiders recently emerged as the favorites to land five-star edge LaDamion Guyton, a Georgia native who is the top player in the '27 class, and Cooper Hackett, a five-star offensive tackle from Oklahoma. Talk about a talent infusion! • Alabama finished the month of June on a high note with commitments from two top-50 prospects — including five-star edge Xavier Griffin — in a three-day span. Turns out July has been even better to coach Kalen DeBoer and his staff. The Crimson Tide landed two more five-stars over the weekend in wide receiver Cederian Morgan, an in-state prospect, and safety Jireh Edwards from Baltimore. They also added defensive lineman Nolan Wilson, a Mississippi native who ranks No. 58 nationally. Advertisement Alabama's class is now ranked No. 5 overall with an average player rating of 93.06, tops among teams with at least 15 commitments. The class includes nine top-100 prospects and four five-stars, and three of the top four recruits in the state are headed to Tuscaloosa. Nick Saban, who was spotted taking pictures with recruits on Alabama official visits last month, would be proud. • When Fran Brown took the Syracuse job in November 2023, there were high expectations for the former Georgia assistant, who was among coach Kirby Smart's ace recruiters. Brown has lived up to the hype on the recruiting trail and made his biggest splash yet on Saturday when wide receiver Calvin Russell, a Miami native who ranks No. 47 nationally, committed to the Orange over Michigan, Florida State, Oregon, Miami, Florida, LSU and North Carolina. Like Ojo at Texas Tech, Russell is set to be Syracuse's highest-rated recruit in program history. Blessed Beyond Measures! — Calvin Russell Dual Sport Ath (@14gump_) July 7, 2025 • Stop us if you've heard this before: Georgia was dominant on the recruiting trail in June. And the rich only got richer last week as the calendar turned to July. Smart and his staff recently picked up a pledge from four-star tight end Brayden Fogle, an Ohio native, after landing 16 commits in June. There were five top-100 prospects among those June commits — cornerback Justice Fitzpatrick, defensive lineman Pierre Dean, offensive tackle Ekene Ogboko, defensive lineman James Johnson and cornerback Caden Harris, who flipped from Vanderbilt. With five-star quarterback Jared Curtis as the headliner, the Bulldogs are in prime position to finish with another top-three class. • Penn State added two commitments over the weekend from prime recruiting areas, four-star linebacker Tyson Harley of Gonzaga College High in Washington, D.C., as well as three-star offensive tackle Marlen Bright of DePaul Catholic in Wayne, N.J. James Franklin's class ranks No. 14 nationally with an average player rating of 89.06 — the program's lowest since the 2017 class. • If the last names of some of Notre Dame's newest commits sound familiar, well, it's because they are. Four-star wide receiver Kaydon Finley, the nation's No. 110 prospect out of Aledo, Texas, is the son of former Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley and picked the Irish over Texas, his father's alma mater, on Friday. Advertisement A day later, three-star wide receiver Devin Fitzgerald, the son of former Arizona Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald, committed to the Irish. This, after four-star linebacker Thomas Davis Jr., the son of former Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, pledged to Notre Dame in November. Marcus Freeman is a hit with NFL dads, and the Irish, who now have the nation's No. 4 class, are reaping the benefits. • Don't look now, but USC has some competition in the race to secure the nation's top class. Hello, Texas A&M. The Aggies picked up three big pieces last week in defensive lineman Bryce Perry-Wright of Buford (Ga.) High, linebacker DaQuives Beck of Carthage (Texas) High and linebacker Tank King of Port Arthur (Texas) Memorial. Perry, ranked No. 38 nationally, is the highest ranked of the three four-star additions. Mike Elko's class currently ranks third nationally behind USC and Georgia, and the average player rating of 92.23 is higher than both — and the Aggies surely aren't finished. • Did Vanderbilt just pick up one of 2026's diamonds in the rough? Three-star offensive tackle Mitchell Smith of Picayune (Miss.) Memorial committed to the Commodores on Friday over Alabama and Florida State. He took visits to all three campuses before picking the Commodores in a ceremony alongside his loved ones. Smith is ranked No. 699 nationally and also picked up offers earlier this year from UCLA, Clemson, USC, Florida, Nebraska and others. The Commodores currently have 16 commits in a class that ranks No. 49 nationally. • Interim head coach Frank Reich scored quite the win on Monday when Stanford landed a pledge from four-star defensive back Lasiah Jackson of Leesburg (Ga.) Lee County. Jackson is the nation's No. 123 prospect and the No. 17 player in Georgia. He picked Stanford over in-state Georgia Tech, Florida State and Alabama. • It's been a tough few days for Texas and coach Steve Sarkisian, who, in addition to losing out on Ojo to Texas Tech, also lost Finley — an in-state legacy — to the Fighting Irish. It wasn't all bad news for the Horns. On Friday, they received a pledge from John Turntine III, an offensive tackle from Fort Worth, Texas, who ranks No. 36 nationally. Turntine is one of three top-100 prospects in Texas' class, joining five-star QB Dia Bell and five-star edge Richard Wesley. Advertisement • USC has had its quarterback in place since Jonas Williams flipped from Oregon in February, and on Friday, the Trojans landed one of the nation's top receivers to give him another threat in the passing game. Four-star Ethan 'Boobie' Feaster picked the Trojans over Alabama, Texas A&M and LSU in a big win for USC and a big loss for the in-state Aggies. Feaster plays at DeSoto (Texas) High and reclassified to the 2026 class in February. He is ranked No. 40 overall and the No. 4 wide receiver. Feaster joins five-star tight end Mark Bowman, the headliner of the class, to give Williams another top pass catcher. • One of the most fascinating quarterback prospects in the nation is heading to Kentucky. Four-star Cincinnati native Matt Ponatoski chose the Wildcats over Alabama, Arkansas and Oregon and plans to play football and baseball in Lexington. Ponatoski is ranked No. 280 overall and the No. 21 quarterback in the class. He was named Ohio Mr. Football by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association in 2024, beating out Tavien St. Clair, a former five-star prospect and current freshman at Ohio State. Ponatoski, who plays at Archbishop Moeller, threw for 4,217 yards with 57 touchdowns and only three interceptions as a junior. Ponatoski, a shortstop and right-handed pitcher, also won the Gatorade Ohio Baseball Player of the Year award. 'I think people think it might be too much,' he told local television station WLWT of playing both sports. 'But it's what I signed up for and I'm ready to go.' Saw Matt Ponatoski at @Elite11 last month. Was really impressed with him. Think Kentucky got a gem: — Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) July 7, 2025 • Sacramento State has made it clear it intends to compete like a big-time program, and the Hornets are recruiting like one, too. Coach Brennan Marion recently picked up a commitment from four-star wide receiver Xavier McDonald, who ranks No. 115 in the 2026 class. McDonald, a Mississippi native, visited Sacramento State officially in June and picked Marion's program over Ole Miss, LSU and North Carolina. Getting this one over the finish line will be huge for Marion to prove his program is for real, but to earn McDonald's commitment in the first place is no small feat. • Looking ahead, this is another big week for top recruits. Four-star athlete Jalen Lott of Frisco (Texas) Panther Creek is picking among LSU, Georgia, Texas, Oregon and USC. He is ranked No. 49 nationally. Five-star defensive lineman Lamar Brown of Baton Rouge (La.) University Lab is committing on Thursday and has a top four of Texas A&M, Texas, LSU and Miami. The Aggies and Tigers have been in heavy pursuit, though he originally canceled his LSU official visit last month, only to reschedule it a day later. Advertisement Other top-100 prospects also committing this week: four-star defensive lineman Jamarion Carlton of Temple (Texas) High on Thursday, four-star athlete Samari Matthews of Cornelius (N.C.) Hough on Friday and five-star tight end Kaiden Prothro of Buford (Ga.) High on Saturday. (Photo of Joey McGuire: Josh Hedges / Getty Images)

College Football Recruiting: 5-Star Commits Over July 4th Weekend

ANN ARBOR, MI - OCTOBER 17: General view as the Michigan Wolverines kick off to the Michigan State ... More Spartans during the first quarter of the college football game at Michigan Stadium on October 17, 2015 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (Photo by) College football recruiting commitments come earlier and earlier every year, but there's a long way to go till the Early Signing Period in December. Seven of the top 10 recruits in the 2026 class already committed including offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell, the No. 1 overall prospect who chose Miami in May. Plenty of names are still on the board with a number of decisions set to be made over the 4th of July weekend. The rush of commitments kicked off early when 4-star QB Luke Fahey (CA) chose Ohio State on Thursday night. The fun is nowhere close to being over as programs continue to build on their 2026 class, and here are five 5-star commitments to watch over the next few days. Star ratings are according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Felix Ojo Offensive tackle Felix Ojo (TX) will choose between Texas, Ohio State, Michigan, Florida and Utah on Friday afternoon. He took official visits to all five schools recently with the Utes getting the final look last month. Ojo is trending toward the in-state Longhorns at this point and is rated as the seventh overall prospect, second offensive tackle and first and Texas. Calvin Russell Wide receiver Calvin Russell (FL) will reveal his decision on Saturday with a top three that includes Michigan, Florida State and Oregon. The Wolverines are considered the favorites a day before the announcement following his final official visit on June 20. If this comes to fruition, Michigan will continue to improve its future passing game after landing Bryce Underwood, the top overall 2025 prospect, with three wide receivers committed already. Jireh Edwards Safety Jireh Edwards (MD) will choose Alabama, Auburn or Georgia on Saturday after canceling official visits to Texas A&M and Oregon. Those were canceled following the OV to Alabama, and all signs point to the Crimson Tide adding one of the top 2026 safeties by the end of this weekend. Edwards is rated as the No. 23 overall prospect in the class. Bryce Perry-Wright Defensive lineman Bryce Perry-Wright (GA) is down to Clemson, Texas A&M, Texas and Miami with a Saturday commitment expected. Opinions are mixed on where he might land with Clemson taking an early lead, but Texas A&M appears to be in the best position at this point of his recruitment following a recent official visit. Perry-Wright is a top-five prospect in Georgia. Chauncey Kennon Cornerback Chauncey Kennon (FL) is expected to be the final 5-star prospect to make a decision over the 4th of July weekend at this point with a commitment coming Sunday night. The top contenders include LSU, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, Miami and Florida State. The Seminoles are in a strong position to pick up the No. 2 overall cornerback prospect in the 2026 recruiting class. Enjoy what should be a fun weekend of college football recruiting.

Alabama, Michigan surge in June: What I'm hearing on the recruiting trail

June official visits have come to a close, and recruiting departments can finally take a breather with the busiest month on the calendar finally over. So what's going on across the recruiting landscape as prospects continue to issue commitments? Here's what I'm following. Note: All rankings are from the 247Sports Composite. Advertisement 1. OK, Alabama. The Crimson Tide started June with five commitments. They are now up to 16 in a class that ranks No. 7 nationally with an average player rating of 92.01. The last week has been especially impressive, with commitments from five-star edge Xavier Griffin from Georgia, in-state top-50 running back Ezavier Crowell and top-100 tight end Mack Sutter from Illinois. Following a less-than-ideal first season on the field, coach Kalen DeBoer is proving that he can get things done on the recruiting trail. 'I feel good about the people we have committed and the people we've still got that are going to make their decision to come to Alabama,' said three-star linebacker Zay Hall, a Tuscaloosa, Ala., native who committed on June 27. 'I feel like this is a great class, great people and great athletes for sure. But we ain't done getting commits. I feel like it'll probably be one of the greatest classes (in the country). 'I feel like (DeBoer) is a great recruiter. He breaks down things about football, of course, but (also) things outside of football that made parents feel good about their child being around him. … For his first time recruiting down here, he's impressed a lot of people. He's shocked a lot of people. He's done an amazing job.' roll tide🐘 — Ezavier Crowell (@EzavierCrowell) June 27, 2025 2. Count Cody Flournoy, the coach at Jackson (Ala.) High, among those impressed with DeBoer's in-state recruiting efforts. Flournoy coaches Crowell, who is ranked No. 33 overall and the No. 2 running back in the class. Crowell chose the Crimson Tide over Auburn, Georgia and Texas, with the Bulldogs and Longhorns emerging as big players in his recruitment. Flournoy is the first to admit that he has historically been an Auburn fan. But he sang DeBoer's praises for keeping Crowell home and how the Crimson Tide have continued to load up on top prospects in the post-Nick Saban era. Advertisement 'They're doing something right,' Flournoy said. 'What a big get (landing Crowell). For an in-state school, it's one of those (situations where) if you let this guy get out of state, whether it's Auburn or Bama, that sends up a lot of red flags, so kudos to them for getting it done. … For DeBoer to lock it down, I think it just means a lot to get your in-state guys. 'That just makes statements.' This comes after DeBoer signed only two in-state products, including none ranked in the top 10, in the 2025 cycle. 3. It's not just in the Southeast where DeBoer has excelled. The Crimson Tide have picked up four commits from the Midwest, too, landing prospects from Indiana, Nebraska, Ohio and Illinois. Sutter, ranked No. 80 nationally, represents a big victory for DeBoer in Big Ten country, with Alabama beating out Ohio State, Illinois and Ole Miss for his pledge. 'I think it says a lot,' said Brett Cazalet, Sutter's coach at Dunlap (Ill.) High School. 'Obviously, Alabama did a great job recruiting, but I think it says a lot about Mack that there was a lot of pressure to kind of stay in the Big Ten (to go to a) Midwest school, and he knew what he was looking for. The school that provided him those opportunities was Alabama. 'I can't imagine stepping into (Saban's) shoes, but coach DeBoer, the one thing that's very impressive to everyone is that he's won at all levels. He's not a guy that just kind of started at the high Division I level and worked up that way. He's done it at all levels and I think with high school coaches, that's an impressive thing. That's very unique in that world today.' Cazalet said co-offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan made the trip to Illinois and offered Sutter on the spot after watching him work out last spring. Cazalet then drove Sutter to that epic Alabama-Georgia game in the fall, and Sutter visited the Crimson Tide again for the Iron Bowl. He took an official visit to Tuscaloosa last month, which provided even more clarity that Alabama was the right spot. Advertisement Cazalet credited Alabama tight ends coach Bryan Ellis for his approach to recruiting Sutter. 'Coach Ellis, I think as you see his personality, he's not an overly — he's not on top of you all the time,' Cazalet said. 'He's more to the point: 'We want you,' stay in contact, build the relationship but not bothering Mack all the time, and I think Mack really appreciated that.' 4. Switching gears to Alabama's rival, Auburn and Hugh Freeze got their quarterback last week when four-star Pennsylvania native Peyton Falzone flipped to the Tigers from Penn State. Falzone is ranked No. 246 overall and the No. 18 quarterback in the cycle, giving the Tigers a face to build the class around as Freeze looks to get moving with this group. Auburn has just six commits in the Class of 2026. Falzone said he first started thinking about making the switch when Auburn offered him about a month ago, after he originally committed to Penn State in April. The Tigers' offensive scheme — which suits his game well as a dual-threat quarterback — was a major selling point. As a junior, Falzone threw for 2,135 yards and 23 touchdowns with four picks while also rushing for 697 yards and eight scores. Breaking the news to Penn State coach James Franklin was tough, Falzone said, especially as an in-state prospect. But sharing his good news with Freeze and the staff has him fired up for what's to come. He has already started recruiting other top talent to join him. 'The past week was definitely a stressful one,' Falzone said, 'and I spent a lot of time sitting down with my family. Auburn just really outweighed the competition and how (Freeze) leads the team with the faith and family base is huge.' 5. Moving over to the Big Ten, how about the run Michigan is on? The Wolverines picked up 11 commits in June, none more impressive than four-star edge Carter Meadows out of Washington, D.C. Meadows is ranked No. 72 overall and the No. 9 edge and picked the Wolverines over South Carolina, Penn State and Ohio State. The Wolverines also added another four-star edge when Julian Walker, out of South Carolina, committed to the Wolverines on Tuesday over South Carolina and North Carolina. Walker's dad, Jamil, works on the strength and conditioning staff at South Carolina. Advertisement Michigan's class is ranked No. 9 nationally and includes 12 blue-chippers among the 19 commitments — the average player rating of 91.29 ranks ninth. 6. One of the most fascinating parts about Michigan's class is that it doesn't include any in-state prospects. That will surely change between now and December (and it needs to if Moore wants to maintain relationships with high school coaches), but it's clear Moore intends to lean into Michigan's brand and recruit nationally. The Wolverines currently have three commits from Texas, two from Washington, D.C., Illinois and Virginia and one from California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, Ohio and South Carolina. Notre Dame has commits from three of the top 10 prospects in Michigan. The state's top player, four-star athlete CJ Sadler, who most recently visited Colorado and North Carolina, is set to issue a commitment Aug. 15. 7. USC still has the nation's top-ranked class. The Trojans have 30 commitments, including 20 blue-chippers and nine prospects in the top 100. Georgia comes in at No. 2 with 26 commits and 19 blue-chippers, including five top-75 prospects. The Bulldogs just made quite the splash in landing four-star defensive linemen James Johnson out of Miami and Pierre Dean out of North Carolina. LSU has the nation's highest average player rating with a 94.24 mark behind 11 commits. 8. Another team on the rise: Tennessee. The Vols on Tuesday picked up commitments from three-star cornerback Jamyan Theodore from Chattanooga, Tenn., and a pair of four-star teammates out of Jackson (Miss.) Academy in linebacker TJ White and defensive lineman Dereon Albert. Albert chose the Vols over North Carolina, while White picked Josh Heupel and his staff over Auburn, Florida State and Mississippi State. Tennessee's class is ranked 12th and includes seven blue-chippers and four top-200 prospects among its 16 commits. The Vols have seemingly also done a nice job maintaining their relationship with five-star quarterback Faizon Brandon, the nation's No. 6 prospect. 9. If you're looking for interesting prospects to follow, keep your eyes on Jaron and Kennan Pula, twin brothers who both play wide receiver at Lone Peak (Utah) High. The twins originally committed to UCLA in September, but both decommitted last week, fresh off a visit to Utah. Might the Utes be able to keep them home? Thank you @Utah_Football for an awesome weekend!! — (@jaron_pula) June 23, 2025 10. Four-star quarterback Landon Duckworth committed to South Carolina in August 2023 but backed off that pledge last summer. Now, a year later, Duckworth could rejoin the Gamecocks' class. Duckworth, the only uncommitted top-20 QB in the 2026 cycle, is down to two schools: Auburn (which already has a quarterback in its class) and South Carolina. Flournoy, his coach at Jackson (Ala.) High, believes the Gamecocks could be the frontrunners and that Duckworth's skill set would fit the offense nicely, considering his similarities to Heisman Trophy hopeful LaNorris Sellers. A dual-threat, Duckworth threw for 3,400-plus yards and rushed for nearly 650 as a high school junior a season ago. Advertisement 'One of the things that South Carolina loves about Landon is, 'Hey, he can make a play when plays break down' and if you watch college football, plays break down quite often,' Flournoy said. 'I think at South Carolina, they have a lot of success with LaNorris Sellers. … Landon fits that mold.' (Photo of Sherrone Moore: Junfu Han / USA Today Network via Imagn Images)

Woman Says Her Husband Always Oversleeps, and It Might Destroy Their Marriage

A woman and her husband got into an "extremely bad' fight over his habitual oversleeping Her husband has always had 'trouble' with mornings and often misses their shared commitments Having vented about him on Reddit, the woman, 35, was encouraged by commenters to end the relationshipA woman got into an 'extremely bad' fight with her husband over his penchant for oversleeping, and now she thinks her marriage is 'over.' The 35-year-old detailed her story on the popular 'Am I the A------?' Reddit forum. In her post, the woman explained that she and her 39-year-old husband have been together for 17 years, and he has 'always had trouble with mornings.' 'He'll set three to four alarms over the course of an hour-and-a-half, usually between 9 to 10 [in the morning], and sleep through all of them. He's super angry when he wakes up, whether I have a part in it or not,' she said, adding that they own a business together and that he will often 'sleep through their shared commitments' if she doesn't wake him up. The original poster (OP) said that her husband is often 'out tinkering in his shop' — sometimes until 5 a.m. — and drinks many beers while doing so. Recently, after a 'hard week,' the OP said that she and her husband agreed to spend an upcoming Sunday discussing their business and 'ongoing financial problems.' They planned to start the discussion at 10:30 a.m. However, the OP said that 10:30 a.m. came and went, and her husband continued to sleep. She finally attempted to wake him at 11:15 a.m. and told him that it seemed as though he was 'avoiding' the things they needed to discuss that day. The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now! 'This turns into a one-hour fight where he tells me that he meant to set his alarm [and] it must not have saved. He also tells me that he is tired and shouldn't have to wake up on a Sunday," she said. She went on to reveal that 'the fighting got extremely bad' and left her 'sobbing' — so she packed her things and drove five hours to her parents. 'I think my marriage is over, and I keep thinking, 'Am I the a—--- for expecting him to keep his promise to wake up? Or am I just crazy for doing this 1,000-plus times?' ' she said at the end of her post. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. The vast majority of commenters told the woman that she is in no way at fault in the situation — and that she made the right decision to leave. 'NTA [not the a------],' said one person, adding, 'You do not need to be putting up with this treatment. He is the one staying up so late and drinking so he feels like s--- all the time and can't meet his commitments. Why should you accept literally any blame? This dude is not good.' 'NTA … you made a decision together to be up at a certain time on Sunday. He was then upset when you tried to hold him accountable to his commitment,' someone else said. Another person said, 'NTA. He has a problem that he's not addressing. Whether it is drinking, sleep hygiene, insomnia, planning, or something else, it's his responsibility to manage it. At the very least, he should talk to his doctor.' The same person added, 'As for leaving, I think you did the right thing. You can drive yourself crazy trying to make someone see logic or your [point of view] when they won't hear you. At some point, the only thing you can do is draw a line and then act in self-preservation. It's up to him to decide if he's going to let this be a wake-up call or not.'
