The UK's best splash pads to cool the kids off in a heatwave
After a brief hiatus, summer's sizzling weather has returned this week, sending parents of young kids in desperate search of air-conditioned cafés and shady patches of parkland. But an even better solution is to aim for one of the many splash pads that dot the country. Filled with fun fountains, giant buckets and teeny slides, they're a great way to cool off young children on a hot day, without the worries that come with full-size pools. The added bonus is that many are free – welcome news with the expensive summer holidays just around the corner. Below, we round up the best across the UK. Falkirk Wheel, Glasgow The educational choice In the semi-industrial shade of the world's only rotating boat lift, the Splash Zone at Falkirk Wheel should get the kids' minds whirring as they work miniature lock gates, clamber between Scottish regions on an outsized map and pilot a boat from the sea to the canal. It makes it a must for little sailors, with the added bonus that there's plenty more to do on-site – from bumper boats to cycle trails, via an adventure playground. How to do it Free; Exact opening hours change seasonally but typically open 9.30am–5.45pm between early May and September; Happy Mount Park, Morecambe The best for nervous types Paid (so unlikely to attract disruptive teens) and time-slotted to ensure there aren't too many people, Splash Park within Happy Mount Park makes a gentle introduction to the joys of splashing for more cautious kids. With jets, cannons and buckets, there's enough to please a mix of ages and it's wheelchair-friendly too. The toy train, adventure playground, trampolines and mini golf course also within the park make for an easy place to while away a sunny day. £4 per child and £1 per adult (other attractions paid for separately); open weekends and school holidays between May and September; Walsall Arboretum, West Midlands The best for grandparents A surprisingly bucolic site, this pristine Victorian town centre park extends for 170 acres, revealing blossom trees, a stream, a bandstand and a duck-dotted lake. Follow the screams of joy that punctuate the peace along its pushchair-friendly paths, though, and you'll end up at the splash pad. Surrounded by shady foliage and next to a playground, it comes with giant flower showers and sprinkler-like fountains. There's a café nearby for ice creams, too. How to do it Free; open late-May until late-August 11am–5pm at weekends and during school and bank holidays; 11am–3pm on term-time weekdays;
