Heat advisory in effect for North Texas due to dangerous temperatures

A Heat Advisory is in effect until 9 p.m. Saturday due to dangerous heat. High temperatures will reach into the mid-90s, which is typical for this time of the year. However, a dense plume of tropical moisture is lingering across the area. The heat, combined with the high moisture content, is causing the heat index values to reach up to 107 degrees on Saturday afternoon. The heat and the moisture will not only spike the heat index values, but they will also promote the opportunity for storms Saturday afternoon. Heat-driven storms will be likely across North Texas, and the highest chance of rain will be along and to the east of I-35. Not everyone will see rain, but those who do may get brief heavy downpours and frequent lightning, but no severe weather is expected. Storms will fizzle out by sunset. A ridge of high pressure will move into the Plains over the next several days, resulting in an increase of the actual temperature outside and a decrease in the humidity levels. Some of the hottest high temperatures of the year will be in the forecast next week. It has been 337 days since DFW has seen a triple-digit day; that streak will likely be broken soon. Some ways to beat the heat are to take frequent breaks in the A/C, wear loose-fitting and light-colored clothing, as well as drink plenty of water. Stay safe.

Howard County issues heat alert as temperatures, humidity soar in Maryland

Howard County has issued a heat alert from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday due to dangerous temperatures and high humidity. The WJZ First Alert Team issued Alert Days for Friday through Sunday due to the risk of dangerous heat, especially for those working outside. Temperatures are expected to stay in the low to mid-90s, but high humidity and heat index values reaching up to 109 degrees Fahrenheit will make it feel significantly hotter. These conditions can cause heat-related illness, the county said. On Thursday, Howard County Health Department officials urged residents to take precautions during extreme heat. Lenora Painter, director of the Bureau of Infection Control and Public Health Readiness at the Howard County Health Department, said tips include limiting physical activity to early morning, finding shade, and staying hydrated. Painter also emphasized the importance of checking on others. "We can make sure that we have decided as a community, area, neighborhood, that we want to make sure we are helping each other," Painter said. According to Painter, there have been 12 heat-related deaths so far this year in Maryland. When the heat index is 90 degrees or higher, or when excessive heat watches, warnings, or advisories are in effect, people should take steps to cool down immediately if they notice a rapid escalation of heat illness symptoms, Painter said. She recommended creating a "cool room plan" by identifying the coolest space in your home to go to when feeling overheated. Keeping fans on and using blackout curtains are also advised. Howard County also has more than 50 cooling centers, available. Symptoms of heat illness include headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, irritability, thirst, elevated body temperature, and heavy sweating, according to the CDC. The National Weather Service suggests removing excess clothing, loosening garments, and using water or ice to help cool person down if you are experiencing symptoms.

Heat advisory continues in North Texas as "feels-like" temperatures could reach 107 degrees on Friday

Another heat advisory and First Alert Weather Day are in effect on Friday due to dangerous heat lingering around North Texas. Small storm chances are on the way over the weekend. The heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service is in effect until 9 p.m. for most of North Texas. Just like Thursday, the culprit isn't the actual temperature but the heat index. Some areas will again reach or surpass a "feels-like" temperature of 105 degrees. Drink plenty of water, take breaks in the shade or in the AC and don't leave anyone in the car. DFW avoided a 100-degree day yesterday by all of two degrees. The drier air Friday afternoon might be the difference in hitting 100 degrees for the first time this summer. Higher humidity on Saturday, along with clouds, will keep highs in the mid-90s. By Saturday, there is the first chance of rain since mid-July. Coverage won't be great, but afternoon storms will queue up across North Texas. Severe weather isn't expected, but it'll be slow-moving, so heavy rain is possible in isolated areas. Rain chances taper back on Sunday afternoon before North Texas gets right back to hot and dry weather next week.

Dangerous heat returns to Southeast Michigan this week

Thursday is a NEXT Weather Alert Day in Southeast Michigan for dangerous heat, which returns for one day only. The late part of this week is at the center of a fiery bullseye as temperatures and dewpoints spike. Highs on Thursday will top out in the low 90s, but the biggest issue is the heat index, which will reach the 100 to 105 degree range. When the heat index reaches these temperatures, the heat stress on your body overcomes its ability to cool itself on its own. With the criteria we expect to be at, a heat advisory will likely be issued by the end of the day on Wednesday. A warning requires three hours or more of 105-plus degrees heat indices. Take breaks in air conditioning, stay hydrated, and we'll have a chance to cool a bit on Friday.
