Russia says it captured another village in Ukraine's Sumy region

Russia said on Tuesday it had captured another village in Ukraine's northeastern Sumy region, the latest in a series of settlements seized near the border, amid growing fears in Kyiv of a larger-scale offensive. Russia's defence ministry said its forces had taken control of the village of Andriivka, located about five kilometres (three miles) from the border. The announcement came the same day Ukrainian officials said a Russian attack on the city of Sumy, farther south, killed at least three people.

India's Kerala state on high alert as vessel with hazardous cargo sinks off its coast

NEW DELHI — India's southern state of Kerala on Monday issued a high alert along its coastal areas and asked fishermen not to venture near the site of an accident where a container ship carrying hazardous cargo sank off its coast in the Arabian Sea. The Liberia-flagged MSC ELSA 3 was sailing between the Indian ports of Vizhinjam and Kochi when it sank about 38 nautical miles off Kerala early Sunday. All 24 crew members were rescued, India's defense ministry said.

North Korea detains officials over warship accident, state media says

SEOUL (Reuters) -North Korea has detained shipyard officials responsible for a recent major accident during the launch of a new warship, state media said on Sunday. The failed launch that crippled the 5,000-tonne warship was witnessed by leader Kim Jong Un who said the accident damaged the country's dignity and vowed to punish those found responsible. The mishap likely occurred in front of a large crowd at the northeastern port of Chongjin, increasing the public humiliation for Kim who tried to show off military might, experts say. As the investigation into the case intensified, law enforcement authorities arrested the chief engineer of the Chongjin Shipyard among others, state KCNA news agency reported on Sunday. Satellite imagery shows the warship, covered in blue tarps, lying on its side, with the stern swung out into the harbor, but the bow remaining on the side slipway, according to the U.S.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Kim has ordered the ship restored before a ruling party meeting in June. KCNA said the rehabilitation plan was pushing ahead. Against U.S. military buildup in the region, North Korea's armed forces "will thoroughly contain and control all sorts of military threats from the enemy countries", KCNA said in a separate dispatch citing the policy chief at the defence ministry.

Russia says downed 112 Ukrainian drones, 8 people wounded

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly rebuffed calls by Kyiv and the West for an unconditional and immediate ceasefire. (AP pic) MOSCOW : Russia's defence ministry said that it had downed 112 Ukrainian drones today in a third night of attacks, with Moscow again targeted with strikes that again disrupted operations at several airports. Since yesterday evening, 'air defence systems destroyed and intercepted 112 Ukrainian drones', including 24 that were headed toward the capital, the ministry said. Eight people were wounded in the Lipetsk region around 450km southeast of Moscow when debris from a falling drone struck an industrial zone in the city of Yelets and caused a fire, regional governor Igor Artamonov said on Telegram. Russia and Ukraine have deployed drones against one another on a near daily basis since Russia launched its military offensive on Ukraine more than three years ago, but Moscow has rarely been targeted. Flights were halted at several Moscow airports yesterday, Russia's aviation authority Rosaviatsiya said. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly rebuffed calls by Kyiv and the West for an unconditional and immediate ceasefire. Russia now controls around a fifth of Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula which it annexed in 2014. The fighting has killed tens of thousands, forced millions to flee their homes and destroyed cities and villages across the east and south of Ukraine.
