World's largest digital camera captures clear images of galaxies

A team at an astronomical observatory in Chile has released images by "the world's largest digital camera", which can capture 3.2 billion pixels. The NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory, jointly set up by US institutions, is equipped with an 8.4-meter telescope and a 3.2-gigapixel camera. It has been recognized as the world's largest digital camera by Guinness World Records. The equipment is said to provide the widest field of view achieved by a telescope of its class -- wide enough to capture an area of the sky equivalent to 45 full moons in a single exposure. Images taken between April and May were made public for the first time. One composite image, compiled from 678 photos, reveals galaxies located thousands of light years from Earth in the direction of the Sagittarius constellation. The image clearly shows gases and dust -- the materials that form stars. Another composite, made from 1,185 photos captured in the direction of Virgo, reportedly contains around 10 million galaxies. The team plans to continuously photograph the entire sky over the southern hemisphere over the next ten years. Scientists hope to make new discoveries, such as finding asteroids within the solar system and identifying how dark matter distorts space. Dark matter is a mysterious substance making up the majority of a galaxy's mass and acting as an invisible glue that keeps stars, dust, and gas together. Associate Professor Utsumi Yousuke of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan and a member of the team said he expects numerous astronomical questions will be answered by observing the universe with an unprecedented breadth and depth.

World's most powerful digital camera captures historic first images

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has just released its first images, captured by the world's most powerful digital camera. Located on Cerro Pachón in Chile, this camera is set to transform how we see the universe. After years of planning and building, the observatory is ready to deliver stunning, ultra-detailed views of the night sky. It has a massive 3.2-gigapixel sensor made up of 201 individual imaging sensors. Each sensor captures 16-megapixel images, all combined to create incredibly detailed photos. The camera takes quick 15-second exposures every 20 seconds, capturing light from ultraviolet to near-infrared wavelengths. This means it can see far beyond what previous telescopes could. The journey started more than 20 years ago, led by the U.S. Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. After sharing early designs in 2015 and assembling the camera by 2020, the final build was completed in early 2025. The camera, roughly the size of a small car and weighing 6,600 pounds, was installed on the Simonyi Survey Telescope in March 2025. This marked a major milestone for the international team involved. The first images show breathtaking views of the Trifid Nebula and Lagoon Nebula, captured over a seven-hour period. These pictures reveal faint details that were previously invisible. In just 10 hours of testing, the observatory captured millions of galaxies, stars, and thousands of asteroids. This is just a preview of what's to come during the upcoming 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). The Rubin Observatory isn't just about pretty pictures. It will collect more data in its first year than all previous optical telescopes combined. Scientists will use this data to study dark matter and dark energy, which make up most of the universe but remain mysterious. The observatory will also discover millions of new asteroids and comets, improving our understanding of the solar system and helping with planetary defense. This camera and observatory are transforming the field of astronomy. Because it can scan the entire Southern Hemisphere sky every few nights, scientists will soon have an incredibly detailed, time-lapse record of the universe. The wealth of data collected will drive discoveries for years to come, spark new research, and help us understand the cosmos in ways that were never possible before. The release of these first images is just the beginning. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory's powerful camera will change how we explore space, uncovering secrets of the universe and potentially protecting Earth from asteroid impacts. Stay tuned as this exciting project continues to open new windows on the cosmos. Aussies lose it over now sold out $29 Kmart ‘keychain'

Budget retail giant Kmart has sparked a frenzy with the release of a $29 keychain, with the item selling out online just days after the brand shared it to social media. The retail store shared a clip to TikTok of the keychain showing it also doubled as a mini digital camera that came with a charging cable and memory card. Kmart's video showed a woman attaching the item to her car keys, before turning it on and taking happy snaps with a friend. 'Say hello to Kmart's $29 mini digital camera,' the promo video states. Social media users promptly lost their minds over the reveal that it was not only a cute accessory but a functional piece of technology. '30 dollars is wild,' one social media user commented. Another added: 'I don't need it, I don't need it, I don't need, I don't need, but I'm afraid I might have to get it.' 'I ran to Kmart today and got four of them. Originally went to get for the three kids … had to get myself one. They are so freaking worth it,' another said. One social media user commented: 'The quality on it is actually really good.' 'This is soooo cuteeeee I want oneeeeee,' another said. One commented: 'Now why would you ever want this.' 'Other than for kids who don't have phones … why? We have cameras with us every day,' one said. 'Saw on TikTok. Immediately left TikTok and went to the Kmart website. Ordered. Paid. Impatiently waiting for order to arrive even though I literally ordered seconds ago,' another commented. Since the video was shared, it has sold out online and many said they couldn't find it in stores. Kmart took to social media once again to calm shoppers, writing: 'Rest assure more stock will arrive soon.' ï¸ Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the brand commented on its popularity. 'Kmart is delighted to see our Mini Digital Camera resonate so strongly with customers and gain viral attention,' a Kmart spokesperson told 'Its popularity reflects a growing appreciation for products that blend nostalgic appeal with practical, everyday functionality. At just $29, this compact and easy-to-use camera is perfect for capturing spontaneous moments, whether at home, travelling, or on the move. Best of all, it comes as a complete pack with a charging cable and memory card included. 'The resurgence of retro-inspired tech speaks to a desire for simplicity, sentimentality and self-expression. At Kmart, we're proud to offer thoughtfully designed products that spark joy and create meaningful connections with our community.' It's not the first time that the budget retailer released a piece of tech with a Y2K feel that caught the attention of shoppers. In March, it dropped a $39 Digital Video Recorder and it promptly went viral on TikTok. The compact camera featured a two-inch LCD screen, offers up to 16x digital zoom, and records in 720p HD — perfect for creating home movies reminiscent of the 90s and early 2000s. It also included an SD card, which you can insert into your laptop to transfer the files. 'The Y2K aesthetic is back, and so is the love for digital cameras and camcorders,' a Kmart spokesperson told 'The Digital Video Recorder brings retro charm with a modern twist — perfect for snapping candid moments and recording memories in a fun, nostalgic way without breaking the bank. 'We know Kmart customers love a good throwback, and these products have made it easy to join the trend. These budget-friendly gadgets offer a simple, no-fuss way to capture life's everyday adventures.' 'Kmart just released little handy cams,' said influencer @cocodevile. 'I'm going see if I can find it before anyone else gets it cause I know they're going be very popular'. Once they found the item, they took it home and gave it a whirl, claiming 'the quality is very bad' but 'I like that'. It's the grainy, low-resolution footage that brought back a wave of childhood memories for Coco and their followers. 'The quality is so Y2K,' one person commented, while another noted: 'I feel like this would be cool if you want to film your life like it's the 80s/90s. Nostalgic aesthetic. Pretty cool for the price'. Another declared that they wanted to have the digital video recorders on tables at their wedding for guests to film candid content. The hype has already influenced many, with one stating, 'I bought one last night,' and another saying: 'Excellent review, I have been influenced and will be buying for the nostalgia, thank you'.

Kmart sends nostalgic shoppers racing over $29 gadget: 'OMG I need it NOW'

Shoppers are racing to Kmart Australia stores to get their hands on a mini version of a retro item that's made an unexpected comeback. Alongside a resurgent interest in all things Y2K fashion and style, early 2000s inspired digital camera have suddenly become trendy again. This is despite most people already having a digital camera available at their fingertips via their smartphone. Kmart have jumped on board the trend by offering a range of standalone digital cameras. But the latest addition to their range - a cute key-chain sized Mini Digital Camera, priced at only $29 - has quickly earned legions of fans. The mass retailer released a TikTok video this week that showcased the camera being clipped onto a set of keys, emphasising its petite size. But despite its adorable stature, the video also demonstrated that it is a 'real' functioning digital camera with surprisingly good picture quality - and video recording capability to boot. The mass budget retailer's latest social media video is captioned: 'Yes, it's a real camera and yes, we will be bringing it everywhere with us these school holidays'. Within a day of being released, the TikTok video amassed over 400,000 views and 20,000 likes. Kmart fans couldn't contain their excitement about the mini-sized version of the retro item. 'OMG THATS SO CUTE,' exclaimed one shopper. 'I NEED THIS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!' excitedly declared another. 'I bought it when it just landed I love it! Can't stop using it,' another happy customer added. The online product description explains that the camera has a 'compact design and user-friendly features'. It also suggests the tiny device is 'ideal for travel, vlogging or spontaneous everyday snapshots'. The dimensions of the miniature gadget are 4.24cm (L) x 2.92cm (H) - and the screen display size is 2.43cm. The compact camera also comes with a USB charging and data cable, keychain, lanyard and 32GB memory card. It also has an built-in flash for night time photographers, as well as six filter options to jazz up images. But among the hundreds of replies to the recent viral video were confused remarks about 'why' demand for digital camera existed given that most people own smartphones. 'Other than for kids who don't have phones… why? We have camera's with us every day,' questioned one person. To this, a commenter offered a simple one-word explanation: 'Nostalgia'. Another added: 'Digital cameras are making a short comeback with the youth, just like bad fashion.' A third person confirmed that even though we've all 'got cameras in our pockets' they were certain 'plenty' of people are 'going to want' this cute buy. The comments were also filled with questions from curious shoppers about some of the functionality aspects of the camera. In reply to queries about the 'quality' of the pictures taken on the camera, one person confirmed that it 'is actually really good'. Others asked whether the device could capture videos, to which Kmart's own social media account confirmed that the camera had the capability to record videos. However those who haven't previously owned digital cameras were stumped as to how images taken on the camera could later be transferred to a phone or laptop. Some helpful replies explained that the camera's SD memory card could be inserted directly into some laptops to extract the images, or that you could transfer the files via the provided USB data and cable cord. Photos taken on the camera can also be printed out by placing the memory card into a photo printing machine – like the ones found in-store at Kmart. A recent statistic from eBay Australia revealed that searches for digital cameras have surged more than 48 per cent in the past year alone, with iconic 2000s-inspired models particularly in high demand.
