Charges dropped against Harvey, Illinois, Ald. Colby Chapman after removal from City Council meeting
Cook County prosecutors on Wednesday dropped charges against Harvey Ald. Colby Chapman, who was arrested and removed from a City Council meeting in April. Chapman had been charged with disorderly conduct and resisting a police officer after she was arrested at the April 28 Harvey City Council meeting. At her first court appearance on Wednesday, prosecutors dropped the charges. Mayor Christopher Clark accused Chapman of being repeatedly disruptive at that meeting, and kept asking about an issue that had already been addressed, leading him to ask the council members to vote on censure Chapman and remove her from the meeting. Chapman said the city had sold a senior's home for $2,000, and she wanted to know why. Video shot by a frequent critic of the mayor, and shared on Chapman's aldermanic Facebook page, shows Chapman refusing to be removed. An officer then came to gather her belongings, prompting Chapman to say: "Don't touch my stuff!" Then Chapman pushed the officer, and was led out by police. She tried to stay in the meeting by holding onto the door. Harvey Chief of Police Cameron Biddings said she was later placed in handcuffs off camera. Clark has accused Chapman of repeatedly grandstanding at council meetings, and said she was censured and asked to leave council meetings twice before. Chapman's mother also was arrested at the meeting, and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Charges against her also were dropped on Wednesday. The video above is from an earlier report.

New law in New Jersey cracks down on intentionally setting public brawls
A new law has taken effect in New Jersey, aimed at cracking down on public brawls. Under the Garden State's newly enacted public brawl law, intentionally starting a public brawl would be a fourth-degree crime punishable by up to 18 months in jail, a fine of up to $10,000, or both. The law also upgrades penalties for disorderly conduct in certain circumstances. A disorderly persons offense is punishable by up to six months in jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. "Under this bill, a person is guilty of inciting a public brawl if the person acts with purpose to organize or promote a group of four or more other persons to engage in a course of disorderly conduct through improper behavior or by causing a disturbance at a public gathering," a description of the bill published in March 2025 read in part. The law also considers any person who attempts to hide their own identity or that of another person while engaging in disorderly conduct to be guilty of a disorderly persons offense. South Jersey Assemblymember Dan Hutchison, who represents District 4 and oversees Atlantic, Camden and Gloucester counties, sponsored the bill. "I think that this law now sends a message to the people who instigate these public brawls on social media that if they take this type of action, they do these things, that they're going to go to prison for 18 months. And if you participate in one of these public brawls, then you're looking at jail time up to a year," Hutchison said. Hutchison told CBS News Philadelphia the legislation came after unruly crowds took over the community celebration, Gloucester Township Day, in June 2024. Gloucester Township Day was canceled again this year after law enforcement officers discovered threats of violent activity were being shared on social media. "When it happened in my backyard, when I saw members of my police department being treated and being injured by these people, that was the straw that broke my camel's back, so to speak, and I was gonna do something," Hutchison said. The law goes into effect immediately.

Baby shower turns into brawl, gunfire damages cars at Broward plaza, police say
A baby shower ended in chaos Sunday evening when a brawl broke out and gunfire damaged nearby vehicles in a Fort Lauderdale shopping plaza, according to police. Police respond to large fight Fort Lauderdale police said they were called to the Town Center Plaza on West Broward Boulevard around 7:30 p.m. after reports of a large crowd fighting. The altercation occurred near a banquet hall, where a baby shower had taken place earlier that afternoon. Business owner finds bullet holes Nicolas Toussaint, who owns NG Shipping LLC in the plaza, said he noticed the damage the next morning. "When I was coming yesterday morning, I saw both cars had shots," said Toussaint. He recalled seeing the baby shower as he was leaving his business on Sunday. "That was a baby shower so I don't think they have to be that fight on a baby shower that shouldn't," he said. Toussaint said he didn't recognize anyone involved in the altercation and was grateful no one was hurt. "Good thing is, it's not me. Think about if you have somebody inside that car," Toussaint said. Disorderly conduct charges filed According to Fort Lauderdale police, two men were issued a notice to appear in court for disorderly conduct and were released.
