No deadline to apply for ration cards, says Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar

Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar said on Thursday that there was no deadline to apply for new ration cards, and no eligible person would be left out of the scheme. Addressing the media along with Civil Supplies Commissioner Saurabh Gaur here, Mr. Manohar said there was also no deadline to apply for modifications, and maintained that there was no delay in issuing the ration cards. The cards were being issued in 21 days of the submission of applications, subject to compliance with the eKYC norm. Modifications and updating of the cards were being done from May 7. As on date, eKYC of 95% of the ration cards had been completed, which no other State could accomplish. Out of 4,24,59,028 cards, eKYC was done for 22,59,498. Mr. Manohar said so far five lakh applications had been received, and there had been no major glitches in sanctioning the cards. After the coalition government took charge, ration card data had been linked with the village and ward secretariats. Ration cards would be distributed to all the eligible beneficiaries in June. The Minister clarified that those seeking changes in the ration cards need not submit marriage certificate or wedding photos as proof. Clear instructions were given in that regard to the secretariat staff, he said. Addition of names to ration cards would be done immediately after due verification, but valid documentation was required to have names deleted. Deletion of names was limited to cases of death. Surrender of cards had to be done by families together. eKYC, Aadhaar seeding and ration card surrender options would be made available through WhatsApp soon, Mr. Manohar added.

Government mandates 4% housing reservation for people with disabilities

New Delhi [India], May 22 (ANI): Union Minister Manohar Lal on Thursday took a milestone decision to provide a reservation of 4% in the allotment of central government housing for the person with disabilities. The decision was taken with an aim to reaffirm the commitment to equal opportunities for all citizens under the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs said in a release. 'In alignment with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, the Directorate of Estates has issued an Office Memorandum to ensure fair access to central government residential accommodations for persons with disabilities,' the release added. According to the ministry, this initiative is a reflection of 'the government's dedication to the empowerment of every citizen and also strengthens the foundation of an inclusive and accessible India.' Recently, the Supreme Court ruled that the eKYC (digital Know Your Customer) process must be made accessible to people with disabilities. A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan, while pronouncing a judgement on PIL pleas seeking directions to the government regarding problems faced by acid attack victims and blind or persons with low-vision in being able to complete the eKYC process, stated that the right to digital access is intrinsic to Right to Life under Article 21 of the Constitution of India. Additionally, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is directed to issue guidelines to ensure that alternative, inclusive methods are available for verifying customer 'liveness' during Digital KYC or e-KYC processes, moving beyond methods like eye blinking, which may not be accessible to persons with disabilities. Furthermore, the RBI must clarify that customer onboarding through video-based KYC (V-CIP) does not require eye blinking, making the process more directions also state that KYC templates and customer acquisition forms must be redesigned to record the type and percentage of disability, enabling institutions to provide accessible services or reasonable accommodations to customers with disabilities. As per the instructions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, under the monitoring of District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari, strong arrangements for electricity, water, toilets and medical facilities are being made on the travel route. The preparations for the journey are being finalized by the Gurudwara Management Committee in Govindghat, Ghangaria and Hemkund Sahib. 'Hemkund Sahib Yatra 2025: Before the opening of the gates, Chamoli police intensified preparations, did a field inspection of the walking route, and took stock of the security arrangements,' Uttarakhand Police said in a post on X. Hemkund Sahib, the renowned Sikh pilgrimage site in Uttarakhand, will open its doors for Darshan on May 25, 2025. In a bid to streamline the registration process, the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) has introduced Aadhar Authentication and eKYC to register for the Char Dham and Hemkund Sahib Yatra, one of the most significant pilgrimages in India. It is aimed at reducing registration time and enhancing the overall experience for pilgrims. With Aadhaar-based online registration, authorities can monitor pilgrim movements, prepare better to avoid overcrowding at temples, and improve weather-related information flow, especially in high-altitude regions. Aadhaar-linked registration can also help in better planning and management of accommodations, transport, food, and medical aid based on the actual number of registered pilgrims, leading to curbing wastage and shortages of resources. It can also be helpful in addressing emergency situations better, as it can further improve coordination between pilgrims and authorities, officials said. Situated at a height of over 15,000 feet above the sea level in the Himalayan ranges of district Chamoli , Sri Hemkunt Sahib has emerged as a popular centre of Sikh Pilgrimage which is visited by thousands of devotees from all over the world every summer. Hemkund is inaccessible because of snow from October through April. (ANI)
