These 7 mini habits build smarter students (and it is backed by Neuroscience!)
Often we equate smartness with studying longer, being more hard working, and getting good grades. However, inculcating smartness in children goes much more beyond toiling day and night. Neuroscience says that sometimes simple, everyday habits can make your child smart and the brain more focused, thus automatically translating into intelligence. Here are 7 such 'mini' habits... Sleep Sleep is one of the most important habits for a smart brain. When students sleep well, their brains process and store what they learned during the day. Sleep helps clear out toxins and strengthens connections between brain cells. Neuroscience says that without enough sleep, memory and focus suffer. So, aim for 7-9 hours of good sleep every night to help the brain work at its best. Enough breaks Studying for hours without a break can tire the brain and reduce learning. Neuroscience suggests taking short breaks every 25-30 minutes, a method called the Pomodoro Technique. These breaks help the brain rest and recharge, making it easier to focus when you return. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Didn't Anyone Tell You About This Power Saver? elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Pre-Order Undo Even a 5-minute walk or stretching can improve attention and memory. Practice Mindfulness Mindfulness means paying full attention to the present moment without getting distracted. (yes, even for children) Deep breathing exercises calm the brain and reduce stress. Neuroscience shows that practicing mindfulness regularly can increase the size of brain areas related to memory and decision-making. Students who practice mindfulness find it easier to concentrate and handle tough tasks. Move Physical exercise is not just good for the body but also for the brain. When students move, their brains release chemicals that help new brain cells grow and improve learning. Even simple activities like walking, dancing, or playing sports can boost brain power. Neuroscience tells us that regular exercise improves memory, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Brain healthy foods What students eat affects how their brains work. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (like fish and walnuts), antioxidants (found in fruits and vegetables), and whole grains give the brain the fuel it needs. Neuroscience shows that these nutrients help protect brain cells and improve thinking skills. Avoid too much sugar and junk food, which can make the brain slow and cloudy. Write it down Writing notes by hand helps the brain learn better than typing on a computer. Neuroscience explains that handwriting activates different parts of the brain involved in thinking and memory. When students write by hand, they understand and remember information more deeply. So, take out that notebook! Teach others One of the best ways to make information stick is to teach it to someone else. Neuroscience shows that explaining ideas strengthens the brain's connections and helps students understand topics more clearly. Teaching can be as simple as sharing what you learned with a friend or family member. This habit not only helps others but also makes you smarter in the long-run. While you may be tempted to juggle multiple projects, honing in on the most promising ones will yield better long-term success. Financially, this year brings both opportunities and valuable lessons. You may discover new income streams —freelancing, side gigs, or monetizing intellectual property—especially in the first half of the year. Be cautious between August and October , particularly regarding overspending on gadgets or travel . Creating a financial buffer and seeking expert advice can bring greater confidence and long-term clarity. Relationships This is a year of personal growth, emotional maturity , and clear communication in love and family relationships. If you're single, your natural charm and wit will draw admirers, but you'll be more discerning, seeking deeper emotional resonance and shared values. Expect some relationships to shift as you are naturally drawn toward people who stimulate your mind and embrace emotional authenticity . One-sided or unbalanced connections may fade on their own. Health This year, your wellness mantra should be routine and nervous system regulation . Your mental agility and busy schedule can make it hard to hit pause, potentially leading to burnout or stress-related issues . The beginning of the year is an ideal time to establish core wellness habits. Physical exercises like Pilates, swimming, or brisk walking will boost stamina, while practices like journaling, meditation , and screen-free evenings will calm your mind. Between June and September , stay alert for signs of overstimulation—such as headaches, irritability, insomnia , or digestive troubles —as they may be signals to slow down and recalibrate. Reduce your reliance on stimulants like caffeine and energy drinks, and maintain regular meal times to support holistic health. Pay extra attention to eye health and posture , especially if you work long hours on electronic devices. Routine health checkups and digital detoxes will help you stay grounded and refreshed. Travel This year, travel will bring inner transformation along with external exploration. You'll be drawn to new cultures, philosophies , or simply a fresh perspective on life. Expect both short and long journeys to carry deep meaning—especially if connected to teaching, writing, research , or spiritual pursuits . The months from May to August are especially favorable for travel, and work trips could open doors to new collaborations and exposure. You may even attend a conference, give a talk, or partner with people from diverse backgrounds. Personal travel may center around family reconnections, ancestral explorations , or solitary getaways. September and December are ideal for retreats or leisure trips that offer peace and rejuvenation . This year could also be the time to explore your dreams of temporary relocation or embracing a more nomadic lifestyle . However, be mindful of Mercury retrograde periods , as they may bring travel delays or communication hiccups. Make detailed plans, have contingency strategies, and embrace spontaneity without losing your organizational grip. You Share Your Birthday With Rahman (Actor) Gayatri Devi K.
