Latest potential measles exposures in Waterloo Region include hospital ERs and Lifelabs
People who visited hospitals in Kitchener and a Lifelabs location in Waterloo may have been exposed to measles. The Region of Waterloo updated its list of potential measles exposures on Monday. The latest additions include: Curex and Waterloo Guardian Pharmacy – 5-380 King Street North, Waterloo Tuesday, May 13 between 1:15 p.m. and 4 p.m. Friday, May 23 between 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday, May 25 between 11:45 a.m. and 4 p.m. Waterloo Region Health Network @ Queen's Boulevard Emergency Department (formerly St. Mary's General Hospital) – 911 Queen's Boulevard Saturday, May 24 between 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. Waterloo Region Health Network @ Queen's Boulevard 700 Medicine Unit (formerly St. Mary's General Hospital) – 911 Queen's Boulevard Sunday, May 25 between 11 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. Conestoga College's Doon Campus was also listed as a potential exposure site on Friday. The latest data from Public Health Ontario showed at least 78 cases of measles reported in Waterloo Region between Oct. 28 and May 27, however Waterloo Region Public Health has reported at least 79 confirmed and 22 probably cases within the region. What to know about measles Measles is a highly contagious virus. The disease can spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or breathes. Even brief exposure to measles can result in illness. Symptoms include a fever, runny nose, cough, red watery eyes, small white spots inside the mouth and a red blotchy rash. Other signs of measles include diarrhea, ear infections and pneumonia. In severe cases, measles can cause brain inflammation and death. It usually takes between seven and 21 days for symptoms to show up. Anyone who believes they may have been exposed to measles is asked to stay at home and avoid contact with others. If medical treatment is needed, people are urged to contact their health provider ahead of time to prevent the illness from spreading to other patients.

Province warns of potential measles exposure at medical centres, other sites
Manitoba public health officials are advising residents of more potential measles exposures that took place in May across the province. The latest public exposure sites in Winnipeg include McPhillips Medical Clinic on May 25 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the warehouse uprising youth group at Riverwood Church on May 23 from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Dynacare Laboratory and Health Services Centre on Henderson Highway is also listed as an exposure site on May 26 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. In Winkler, individuals may have been exposed to measles who attended Moonlite Auto Body from May 23, 26 and 27 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the Best Western Hotel indoor pool on May 22 from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. the following day. Potential exposures to the virus in Winkler may have also taken place at the C.W. Wiebe Medical Centre urgent care entrance area on May 22 from 10:40 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at the Winkler Sommerfeld Mennonite Church on May 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Meanwhile, in Portage la Prairie, individuals may have been exposed on May 27 at McDonald's restaurant (25 25th Street N.W.) from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and at the city's hospital's emergency department from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. the following day. Public health officials advise individuals who think they may have been exposed to contact Health Links-Info Santé, isolate at home if symptoms develop and contact their health-care provider. Measles symptoms generally appear seven to 21 days after exposure and may include fever, runny nose, drowsiness, red eyes and irritability. White spots may also appear on the inside of the mouth or throat with a red rash appearing several days after initial symptoms. According to the latest data from the province, 53 measles cases have been confirmed in May as of May 24. Since February, 72 measles cases have been confirmed in the province with four probable cases.

2 new confirmed cases of Measles in Peel Region, public health agency warns
Social Sharing Peel Public Health is warning the public of multiple possible measles exposures after confirming two new, but unconnected, cases of the virus in the region. The health agency put out a release Friday saying it was investigating the new cases and warning that anyone who was present at the following locations during the times listed may have been exposed to the disease. May 21 Chapters and Starbucks at 3900 Highway 7 W. in Vaughan between 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. May 22 Brampton Urgent Care Centre East at 51 Mountainash Road between 7:20 p.m. and 10:43 p.m. May 23 Pakistan International Airline, Flight PIA 781 arriving from Pakistan at 7:59 p.m. Toronto Pearson International Airport, Terminal 3, including any areas visited during arrival, customs and exit processes between 7:59 p.m. on May 23 and 12:30 a.m. on May 24. Five were travel-related, and three were from close contacts or community spread. Last year, the agency confirmed three cases. Cases in Peel are not known to be connected to the current multi-jurisdictional measles outbreak in Ontario, according to the Peel Public Health release. Peel Public Health advises anyone who was at any of the exposure sites during the times listed to check their immunization record to confirm they are up to date with vaccinations. Anyone experiencing symptoms should contact their health provider and stay home from work or school. Anyone who is pregnant, has a weakened immune system, or has an infant under the age of one, should contact their local public health unit right away. Symptoms can include fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, a red rash that begins on the face and spreads down the body and small blue-white spots that can appear on the inside of the mouth and throat. They usually begin seven to 21 days after infection. There have been nearly 1,800 measles cases reported in Ontario since October, when a measles outbreak began across Canada. The disease is deemed eliminated in Canada by the World Health Organization, but the country is now at risk of losing that status.

Bay Area resident may have exposed others to measles after travel, officials warn
Health officials in two Bay Area counties warned about a potential exposure to measles involving a resident who tested positive for the virus after traveling. According to the Santa Clara County Public Health Department and the Alameda County Public Health Department, the person had returned home from international travel and passed through a U.S. airport where they might have been exposed to measles. The airport was not named. As of Thursday, the person was not hospitalized and is isolating at home. Officials released a list of businesses in Alameda and Santa Clara Counties where the person visitied, possibly exposing others to the virus. Locations include: • May 21 between 7:15 p.m. and 9 p.m. at the H Mart on 1719 Oakland Road in San Jose • May 23 between 11:45 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Starbucks on 34050 Newark Boulevard in Newark • May 25 between 4:45 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Trader Joes on 1306 Great Mall Parkway in Milpitas People who visited the above locations at those times may be at risk for measles if they are not immune or unsure if they are vaccinated. Immunization records can be checked by contacting one's healthcare provider or by visiting Anyone who is pregnant, the parent of an infant, have a weakened immune system or are unimmunized should contact their healthcare provider. People potentially exposed should monitor for symptoms for seven to 21 days, which include fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis and a rash that appears 10 to 21 days after exposure. Anyone with symptoms must call ahead to medical facilities before going in to protect other patients and visitors. Officials are expected to provide an update at a news conference on Friday. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the U.S. has seen 1,046 measles cases so far this year, with three deaths confirmed. Thirty percent of the cases were in children under 5 years of age.
