‘Planned on WhatsApp': Mara denies link to 15-bike convoy crash that killed three near Seremban
KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) has denied organising the motorcycle convoy that led to a fatal crash involving 16 students from its affiliated institutions. The agency said the ride was a casual plan by the students and not an official event. 'Based on initial investigations, the convoy activity was an informal initiative casually organised by the students themselves through discussions in a WhatsApp group, without any official involvement from the institution or Mara,' it said in a statement. Three students from Kolej Poly-Tech Mara (KPTM) Bangi died in the crash, while nine others were injured and three escaped unharmed. One student from the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) suffered minor injuries and is being treated at Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar in Seremban. The incident took place around 2.30am on the North-South Expressway near KM 262 as students returned from a late-night gathering in Seremban. Police believe the first crash occurred when a motorcycle lost control, causing a chain reaction among the group of 15 bikes travelling together. A second crash then took place when a lorry and a car stopped near the scene and another group of students tried to overtake them, colliding with the vehicles. Mara said the three deceased students were Haris Azib Sulaiman, Afkar Fitri Affendi, and Aliff Syahmi Abdul Hakim, whose bodies have been sent to their respective hometowns. The agency said it had channelled RM1,500 in condolence aid to the families and is processing insurance claims of up to RM38,000 for each victim, subject to policy terms. Mara expressed sadness over the tragedy and pledged continued support, including emotional and psychosocial assistance for the affected families and students. It also called for public patience as investigations continue, promising full cooperation with the authorities and a transparent follow-up process.

CCTV captures alleged hit-and-run horror
Chilling CCTV that allegedly shows a car being driven by a mother striking and killing a woman in a hit-and-run crash has surfaced, as the accused faces court six months on from the incident. Zakia Bashi Qamber fronted Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday, charged with causing the death of the 40-year-old woman in the early morning crash in January. Grainy CCTV footage shows a vehicle, allegedly driven by Ms Qamber, approaching the woman with headlights piercing the darkness. The woman suffered serious injuries in the hit on Kinkaid Rd in Elizabeth East and died at the scene. Ms Qamber is charged with causing death by the careless use of a vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident after causing death. She was due to enter pleas to the charges on Thursday but Michael Woods, appearing for Ms Qamber, asked for an eight-week adjournment as he needed more time to consume material. Mr Woods said he was still waiting on body-worn camera footage from the scene of the crash, the confirmation of biological material on the undercarriage of the vehicle and a post-mortem toxicological report. He told the court he might consider a no case to answer application after reviewing the material. 'It appears there is a large amount of disclosure outstanding,' Magistrate Lynette Duncan said. She listed September 18 for the next answer charge hearing, where Ms Qamber is expected to enter her pleas. An interpreter stood with Ms Qamber in the dock and spoke softly to her throughout proceedings. Ms Qamber has been granted bail and left the court with a supporter. She has no prior criminal history.

Family pay tribute to ‘caring' 78-year-old killed when car crashed into house
Police have named a 78-year-old woman who died after a car crashed into her house following a collision in Coventry. Barbara Howard died in hospital after the Jaguar car struck her property shortly before 5pm on July 17. West Midlands Police said its officers understood that the car had been in a collision with a Volkswagen van at the junction of Shilton Lane and Lentons Lane. Ms Howard was inside the house at the time, police said, and specialist officers are now supporting her family. In a tribute released on Wednesday, her relatives said of her: 'Caring, sharing, glamorous, and stunning, someone who loved life. 'Dancing mother of Debbie and Julie, our best friend was taken in the most horrific way. We love her to the moon and back.' The drivers of both vehicles involved were spoken to at the scene, and police are appealing for information or footage to assist their inquiry.
