UFC Announces First Six Fights For Perth Card Including Main Event
The UFC heads back to Perth, Australia, on Saturday, September 27, for a fight card headlined by an important light heavyweight affair. In that contest, the surging Carlos Ulberg faces the reinvigorated Dominick Reyes in a matchup that will have repercussions at the top of the UFC's 205-pound weight class. The UFC recently officially announced the first six bouts for the UFC Perth fight card. UFC Perth Fight Card: Official Matchups Carlos Ulberg vs. Dominick Reyes - Light heavyweight Michelle Montague vs. Luana Carolina - Women's bantamweight Loma Lookboonmee vs. Alexia Thainara - Strawweight Colby Thicknesse vs. Josias Musasa - Bantamweight Choi Doo-ho vs. Daniel Santos - Featherweight Navajo Stirling vs. Rodolfo Bellato - Light heavyweight UFC Perth Main Event: Carlos Ulberg Vs. Dominick Reyes Carlos Ulberg (12-1) made his UFC debut in March 2021 after winning a contract on a Dana White's Contender Series card. Ulberg's knockout win on the DWCS moved his record to 5-0. At the time Ulberg was known mostly as a member of the City Kickboxing team out of Auckland, New Zealand. Ulberg earned a 'Fight of the Night' bonus for his effort in his first official UFC contest, but he did not get a victory. Instead, Kennedy Nzechukwu knocked him out in the second round of that contest. Ulberg bounced back from his first career defeat to pick up a decision win over Fabio Cherant. He followed that with victories over Nicolae Negumereanu, Ihor Potieria, and Jung Da-un. In May 2024, Ulberg got his first name opponent, when he went up against Alonzo Menifield. He dispatched Menifield in 12 seconds. The UFC then booked Ulberg against former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Volkan Oezdemir. Ulberg bested him by decision over three rounds. In his most recent outing, Ulberg faced a former UFC 205-pound champion in Jan Blachowicz. Ulberg won that three-rounder via decision. Ulberg heads into UFC Perth as the No. 3 contender in the official UFC light heavyweight rankings. Dominick Reyes (15-4) joined the UFC in 2017. He had a 6-0 record at the time. Reyes made a statement in his promotional debut, knocking out Joachim Christensen in 29 seconds to claim a 'Performance of the Night' bonus. Reyes followed that victory with five straight wins, the last of which was a knockout of former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman. The first-round finish earned Reyes his second 'Performance of the Night' bonus. More importantly, the victory set him up for a 2020 matchup with then-UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Reyes pushed Jones for five rounds at UFC 247, but his effort was not rewarded by the judges on that night in Houston, Texas, as Jones picked up a unanimous decision win. The fight was close. Close enough that UFC CEO Dana White said he has the fight scored three rounds for Reyes and one for Jones going into the last round. Reyes has struggled after that loss with consecutive knockout setbacks to Jan Blachowicz, Jiri Prochazka, and Ryan Spann. In June 2024, Reyes righted the ship with a first-round knockout win over Dustin Jacoby. Proving that win was not a fluke, Reyes knocked out former title challenger Anthony Smith at UFC 310. Reyes followed those two KO victories with a third straight stoppage by strikes, finishing Nikita Krylov at UFC 314. Reyes's current run has earned him the No. 8 ranking in the UFC light heavyweight division. New co-main event announced for UFC 319 event
The UFC 319 fight card has a new co-main event, as rising contender Aaron Pico will square off with unbeaten Lerone Murphy. Pico was expected to meet Movar Evloev this past weekend when the UFC went over to Abu Dhabi, but Evloev withdrew from the fight. Instead of trying to keep Pico on that card, officials moved him to the August 16 event in Chicago, Illinois from the United Center. MORE: Reinier de Ridder with a big win over former UFC champion Robert Whittaker A former Bellator fighter, Pico signed with the UFC after Bellator was acquired by the PFL. He owns a record of 13-4 as a pro, which includes a 9-1 run. The lone loss during that stretch was when he suffered a shoulder injury vs. Jeremy Kennedy. Murphy is 16-0-1, with the draw coming back in 2019 in his UFC debut vs. Zubaira Tukhugov. Since, he is 8-0, including an April decision over Josh Emmett to follow up a win over Dan Ige. UFC 319 features Dricus du Plessis defending his middleweight title against Khamzat Chimaev along with previously announced fights between Geoff Neal and Carlos Prates, Jared Cannonier and Michael Page, and Tim Elliott and Kai Asakura. It's always shocking to see the praying mantis that is 'The Towering Inferno' walk out and think he's a 155'er. Prefight: Jimmy Lennon Jr. is now announcing the two fighters. Voice smooth as silk, as usual. This fight was wild to take on 12 days notice. Going to be interesting to see how Tszyu deals with the length of Fundora. Tszyu gets his announcement and now it's Fundora's turn. Fundora is the tallest ever super welterweight champion. Fair amount of pop from the crowd for Fundora as well. Let's get it in. Round 1: Fundora is working the jab and Tszyu swinging for the fences already. Tszyu has a fair read on the distance early. Fundora is falling short with the jabs. Tszyu is also looking to dip on the outside for the right hand up the middle against the southpaw Fundora. BIG KNOCKDOWN FROM FUNDORA! Catches Tszyu trying to shift to the outside with a big left cross and Tszyu beats the count. Fundora is not pressing the pace too much and Tszyu lands a good left over the top. Tszyu doesn't look to terrified after the flash knockdown. MMA Fighting scores this round 10-8 Fundora (10-8 Fundora) Round 2: Fundora is out this round pressing with the jab and cross. Tszyu is trying to fight off the back foot which will be disaster for him. Now Fundora is fine pot shooting Tszyu. He catches Tszyu around the guard and stuns him again. Tszyu is covering up. Fundora backs off and Tszyu lands a big left that snaps Fundora's head to the side. Tszyu is struggling to get to the inside of Fundora, who is using his jab well for once. Tszyu doesn't have the head movement to deal with Fundora's length, especially after being buzzed twice in two rounds. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Fundora (20-17 Fundora) Round 3: Fundora stepping on the lead foot of Tszyu, savvy stuff. Tszyu lands a right from underneath and shoves Fundora. He's clearly stronger, more of that. Tszyu literally punches Fundora's right thigh. Now Tszyu is doing a good job covering the jab with his lead hand. He's having more success getting in and landing to the body (and thigh, lol). Tszyu leaned to his left too much and Fundora lands another left hand that gets a pop from the crowd. Tszyu has stopped worrying about the lead hand battle and Fundora is marching forward again. Tszyu and his coaches have some good ideas but it looks like he lacks the discipline to keep the plan in place. Close round. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Fundora (30-26 Fundora) Round 4: Tszyu is back to the high guard that he's had no success with. Tszyu is on auto pilot now. Tszyu goes cross to the body, left hook high and Fundora comes over the top, punishing Tszyu for having audacity. Tszyu is stuck against the ropes again this round. Tszyu is getting pot-shotted again. Tszyu is now winging in the right, Fundora landing 3 punches to Tszyu's one. Fundora got a bit lazy and Tszyu lands another big right over the top. He can't seem to hurt Fundora. Now Tszyu has Fundora's nose open again. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Fundora (40-35 Fundora) Round 5: Much more success for Tszyu early. Fundora is not jabbing as much and Tszyu is coming back with big shots high and to the body. 2⁄3 through the round and Fundora decides to jab again. Tszyu decides to try to fight the lead hand again and find the outside angle. Tszyu threw a dangerous leaping left hook that he got away with. Fundora is ending the round strong, putting Tszyu in the corner. Tszyu finally banks a round. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Tszyu (58-45 Fundora) Round 6: Fundora comes out and commands the center of the ring. Tszyu is setting up his left high by throwing to the body first. Fundora is now on the back foot, trying to land volume on Tszyu. Tszyu is fighting much less chaotic. It's serving him well. He just can't get too complacent. A good right hand from Fundora draws a reaction from the crowd. Tszyu slips to the outside and lands a nice right up the pop. Despite Fundora's volume, this is another Tszyu round. Is he mounting a comeback? MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Tszyu (67-55 Fundora) Round 7: Tim Tszyu has yet to go back to hand fighting. Fundora opens the round landing a bit heavier. He's trying to close out Tszyu's comeback. Fundora is reaching bad on the body shots from Tszyu and Tszyu is trying to crack that chin. Every time Tszyu gets his high guard back up, Fundora begins to march him back to the ropes. The two get in a phone booth and Tszyu lands a massive right. They are now fighting in the pocket and it's all action! A big left from Tszyu. Fundora is starting to clinch up! Tszyu just had his best round! He's playing a dangerous game, yet an entertaining one! MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Tszyu (76-65 Fundora) They just called the fight in the corner! My mind is blown! Something must have happened. This is insane, Tszyu was on an incredible comeback. The announcers are saying he was out on his feet. What a round, this has been a letdown of a finish for two great fighters. Official decision: Sebastian Fundora defeats Tim Tszyu via corner's stoppage in round seven. Postfight: Tszyu is up first. 'He's one tough motherf*****.' He seems in good spirits and calls Fundora the best fighter in the division. Tim Tszyu is obviously upset but he's taking the loss in stride. Now over to Fundora. Fundora is crediting his size for his win and wants to start 'bullying these guys.' He continues, 'I looked at myself in the mirror and said, 'Oh wow, I have reach.' Fundora is dry and he throws it out to Pacquiao and gets the crowd ready for Pac-man. Between 2011 and 2018, Poirier went 16-4-0-1, picking up notable wins over Max Holloway, Bobby Green, Jim Miller, Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje, and Eddie Alvarez. His losses during that stretch came to The Korean Zombie, Cub Swanson, Conor McGregor, and Michael Johnson. Poirier's wins over Miller, Pettis, Gaethje, and Alvarez set him up to fight for the interim UFC lightweight title against then-UFC featherweight titleholder Max Holloway. Poirier was the No. 3 ranked fighter in the UFC 155-pound division at the time, April 2019. Poirier claimed the interim crown with a decision win. In September 2019, Poirier faced Khabib Nurmagomedov in a title unification bout. Nurmagomedov won that contest by third-round submission. Three wins after that, including two TKO victories over Conor McGregor, put Poirier in another lightweight title fight. He lost that battle to Charles Oliveira, falling to a rear-naked choke in the third round of their December 2021 matchup. The 36-year-old Poirier is 2-2 since that setback with wins over Michael Chandler and Benoit Saint Denis. Poirier's losses during that run came against Justin Gaethje for the BMF title and, most recently, opposite Islam Makhachev for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 302 in June 2024. He holds the UFC featherweight record for wins (20), finishes (11), knockouts (nine), win streak (13 straight), total fight time (6:58:57), significant strikes landed (2,971), and total strikes landed (3,180). Holloway's overall UFC records include significant strikes landed (3,457) and total strikes landed (3,706). Holloway's run as UFC featherweight champ began in June 2017 when he knocked out Jose Aldo. Holloway entered that contest as the interim champ, a belt he won by knocking out Anthony Pettis in December 2016. He defended his title against Aldo (TKO), Brian Ortega (TKO), and Frankie Edgar (decision). He also attempted to win the interim UFC lightweight belt during that run, but he fell short, dropping a decision to Dustin Poirier. Holloway's championship run ended in December 2019 when Alexander Volkanovski beat him by decision. Volkanovski retained the title in an immediate rematch. Wins over Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez earned Holloway another shot at Volkanovski and his title in July 2022, but the champ retained his belt with a decision win. Holloway followed that setback with wins over Arnold Allen, the Korean Zombie, and Justin Gaethje. The Gaethje victory, a fight that many voted 'Fight of the Year' and 'Knockout of the Year,' earned Holloway the BMF title. That fight took place at 155 pounds. Holloway followed his BMF title win with the first knockout loss of his career, falling to Ilia Topuria in a UFC featherweight title fight in October 2024. They first met in a featherweight scrap at UFC 143 in February 2012. The bout was Holloway's fifth pro fight and first as a member of the UFC. He was 4-0 heading into the contest. Meanwhile, Poirier had been with the WEC/UFC for two years by then with a 11-1 pro record. Poirier won that fight, and earned Submission of the Night, for his first-round triangle armbar stoppage. The two faced off for the second time in April 2019 at UFC 236. That matchup was for the interim UFC lightweight title. Poirier won that 'Fight of the Night' bonus-winning scrap.
