Ukraine loses French-supplied fighter jet

The Ukrainian air force has reported the first loss of a French-supplied Mirage 2000 fighter jet in what officials described as an equipment failure on Tuesday evening. France pledged six of its 26 Mirage 2000 jets to Kiev as part of a multibillion-euro military aid program supporting Ukraine in its armed conflict with Russia. French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced the delivery of the first three jets in early February. Ukrainian media reported the crash occurred in the Volyn Region in western Ukraine, far from the front line. Video circulating online appeared to show the pilot descending by parachute. The Ukrainian military commended the pilot of the downed aircraft, saying he acted 'professionally' and safely ejected. Air Force public communications chief Yury Ignat said the unidentified pilot 'did everything to divert the aircraft to a safe place far from any settlement.'🇷🇺🇫🇷🇺🇦 First losses of French Mirage 2000 in Ukraine The fighter crashed due to engine failure. The French were delivering aircraft built in the 1980s to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which were modernized in the 2000s. 'Such incidents are common all over the world,' Ignat added. 'The important thing is the pilot is alive and well.' Ukraine has previously confirmed the loss of multiple US-made F-16 fighter jets in combat. While Kiev initially asserted that Western aircraft would provide a battlefield advantage, they have largely been used for intercepting Russian long-range missiles due to a shortage of air defense systems. The Mirage 2000 models sent by France are older and were scheduled for retirement by 2029. France also trained Ukrainian pilots to operate them. The Ukrainian military relies heavily on foreign aid to pay and equip its forces. Denis Shmigal, the former prime minister recently appointed defense minister in a government reshuffle, said this week the military would need at least $120 billion next year. He made the statement while addressing Ukrainian ambassadors, urging them to seek additional foreign support. Following a meeting with international arms donors Monday in Germany, Shmigal said Kiev faces a $6 billion shortfall in weapons procurement. Russia has condemned Western arms shipments, warning they only prolong the conflict without changing its outcome.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Ukrainian military loses first French Mirage fighter jet in crash ahead of peace talks

Ukraine 's military has confirmed the loss of a Mirage 2000 fighter jet supplied from France to a crash yesterday after it experienced equipment failure during an assignment, with the pilot ejecting safely. This marks Kyiv 's first loss of a Mirage jet since Ukraine's military started receiving them earlier this year. "Equipment failure occurred, which the pilot reported to the flight controller," a military statement said on Telegram. This comes as Russia has said it is unlikely to agree to a peace deal despite fresh ceasefire negotiations with Ukraine expected to take place today. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said: 'There is no reason to expect any breakthroughs in the category of miracles - it is hardly possible in the current situation.' The third round of talks are set to take place in Istanbul, Turkey after previous summits n May and June failed to yield any results, except agreement on swapping prisoners of war. 'We intend to pursue our interests, we intend to ensure our interests and fulfil the tasks that we set for ourselves from the very beginning,' Mr Peskov said. Ukraine Marks First Loss Of Mirage 2000 Fighter

A Ukrainian Dassault Mirage 2000 fighter has crashed, the first loss of one of the jets that were donated by France. 'On the evening of July 22, 2025, while performing a flight mission on a Mirage-2000 fighter jet, an aircraft equipment failure occurred, which the pilot reported to the flight manager,' the Ukrainian Air Force reported. 'He then acted competently, as is expected in crisis situations, and successfully ejected. The search and rescue team found the pilot, his condition is stable. There were no casualties on the ground. A special commission has been appointed to establish the causes of the aviation incident.' The Ukrainian Air Force received its first Mirage back in February. Before delivering the jets, France performed unspecified modifications to allow them to fly air-to-ground missions. You can read more about that here. This is the latest loss of a donated fourth-generation fighter. Ukraine has also seen at least three of its donated F-16s destroyed. This is a developing story. Stay with The War Zone for updates. Captured: moment seagull hits 600mph Typhoon at air show

A photographer has captured the moment a seagull collided with a Spanish fighter jet, shattering its canopy as it was performing aerobatic manoeuvres at an air show. A lesser black-backed gull flew into the path of the Eurofighter Typhoon as the plane was flying at about 600mph at the Aire 25 air show in San Javier in Murcia in June. Javier Alonso de Medina Salguero, an aviation photographer, captured the incident in a four-shot sequence before and after the moment the bird hit the right side of the windscreen. The final shot shows the shattered perspex and the pilot, who ended the flight and returned to land. The bird just before the strike and, below, the moment of impact JAVIER ALONSO DE MEDINA SALGUERO/SWNS JAVIER ALONSO DE MEDINA SALGUERO/SWNS Tens of thousands of birds hit aircraft in flight every year, almost always at low height near airports. The majority cause little damage. Most cases that make the news involve jets that suffer engine failure after their turbines ingest birds. A bird strike began the sequence that brought down a Jeju Air Boeing 737 in Muan, South Korea, in December, killing 179 people. Windshield strikes, which account for almost half of bird collisions with helicopters and about 20 per cent with fixed-wing planes, can be dangerous. Pilots have been killed and badly injured when larger birds have smashed through the windscreen, hitting them in the head and chest at speeds of more than 100mph. The impact energy of a seagull with a jet fighter near the speed of sound is huge, potentially destabilising it in low-altitude manoeuvres. The cost of replacing the canopy can run well into six figures. • Planes are striking more birds, but Detective Dove is on the case The photographer said he was using a Nikon D7500 with a 200-500mm lens when he saw the Eurofighter pull out of the display. 'They reported over the radio that it had hit a seagull and broken the cockpit. Just then, I looked at the photos I had and saw the whole sequence,' he said. 'I was amazed to see the front of the cockpit broken.' The pilot was able to land safely despite the shattered windscreen JAVIER ALONSO DE MEDINA SALGUERO/SWNS King Felipe was attending the show, in which there were displays by Spain's Eagle Patrol, the RAF's Red Arrows and Italy's Frecce Tricolori teams. The jet that hit the bird was from the Spanish air force's 11th wing, based in Moron.

Ukraine's military loses first French Mirage fighter jet in crash

July 22 (Reuters) - A Mirage 2000 fighter jet supplied to Ukraine from France crashed on Tuesday after experiencing equipment failure during an assignment, with the pilot ejecting safely, Ukraine's military said. It was the first loss of a Mirage jet since Ukraine's military started receiving them earlier this year. "Equipment failure occurred, which the pilot reported to the flight controller," a military statement said on Telegram. "The pilot then acted competently, as is expected in crisis situations, and successfully ejected. A rescue crew found the pilot in a stable condition. There were no casualties on the ground." Ukrainian news reports said the incident occurred in the northwestern Volyn region. Ukraine's military announced the arrival of the first batch of Mirage aircraft in February. U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets began arriving last year from different countries as Ukraine's Western allies sought to help Kyiv upgrade its largely Soviet-era air force fleet.
