Rivals/On3 Insider provides two key updates on Texas A&M's priority 5-star prospects
Texas A&M's recruiting success last month was borderline historic, as the school landed three five-star prospects in the 2026 cycle, culminating in Saturday's critical commitment from five-star edge rusher Bryce Perry-Wright, out of Buford, Georgia. Coach Elko and his staff have developed strong relationships with all 24 commits, and momentum could continue this week with the top-ranked defensive lineman in the class set to make his announcement. On Thursday, 2026 five-star DL Lamar Brown, the crown jewel of the 2026 cycle in the trenches, is expected to choose between the LSU Tigers or Texas A&M on Thursday, July 10. Right now, the Louisiana native, who has spent his entire football career in the backyard of Death Valley up to this point, is slightly leaning towards staying home. On Monday, Rivals recruiting insider Steve Wiltfong provided an update regarding where the Aggies stand with Brown during his appearance on Josh Newberg's Rivals show, stating that while he still believes LSU has the edge, Brown's nearly double-digit visits to College Station, combined with his belief in the program, still stand out. "They might be the program in on the move five-stars down the stretch" Wiltfong stated. "They have as good a chance as anyone to finish No. 1, and that starts with Lamar Brown. Maybe LSU has the edge, but there's been times where A&M has been the favorite. He's visited there seven times. Coach (Tony) Jerod-Eddie, Coach (Sean) Spencer, again, Coach (Mike) Elko, the scheme, how comfortable he is around the program, NIL opportunities; don't sleep on Texas A&M for Lamar Brown." While this take on Brown is similar to AggieYell insider Landyn Rosow's recent update that LSU and Texas A&M are "50-50" leading up to his announcement, Wiltfong also included a key update on the No. 1-ranked wide receiver in the 2026 class, five-star LSU commit Tristan Keys regarding Tennessee and Texas A&M's potential to flip the elite route runner. "There's buzz that's starting to rise where Texas A&M and Tennessee may be better positioned long-term. Now Miami is going to be swinging Tristen Keys as well, and LSU is doing everything they can to keep him in the fold. But the Aggies and the Vols are certainly doing a good job." For the Aggies to land both elite prospects ahead of Early Signing Day on December 4, it will take a strong effort from the coaching staff, and likely an in-season visit even if Lamar Brown commits to Texas A&M on Thursday. Texas tied for second-most 2026 five-star commitments in Rivals industry rankings
Texas kicked off Tuesday with the best news possible. Despite several other top programs pursuing him to the very end, five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson committed to the Longhorns. The Longhorns now have three five-star commits in the 2026 cycle per Rivals industry rankings. This lifts them past LSU and ties them with Oregon for the second-most five stars. Both trail Alabama, which has four. Texas flipped defensive lineman James Johnson from Georgia on Tuesday as well. Although he is a five-star prospect on Rivals, the site's industry rankings have him as a high four-star recruit. Every five-star industry ranking commit for Texas ranks within the top 20. Five-star Dia Bell is the No. 9 player overall and the No. 1 quarterback on Rivals. The aforementioned Atkinson ranks as the No. 9 prospect and the No. 1 linebacker. Richard Wesley is the nation's No. 18 overall prospect and he's the No. 3 edge in the country. What's impressive about the five-star success of Texas is the Longhorns have pulled from three different states. Bell is from Florida. Atkinson hails from Georgia. Wesley is from California. That means Texas has snagged three top 20 players and done so by plucking from three of the top recruiting states in the country. Texas is sitting in a great spot to have another top-tier recruiting class in 2026. Texas moves to No. 6 in Rivals industry rankings after flipping five-star DL James Johnson
The Texas Longhorns are on cloud nine after winning the recruiting battle for five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson and pulling off the flip of five-star defensive lineman James Johnson from Georgia on Tuesday. The addition of Johnson catapulted the Longhorns up the recruiting rankings. Texas is No. 6 per Rivals industry team rankings. Johnson is joined by Atkinson, five-star quarterback Dia Bell and five-star edge Richard Wesley atop Texas' class. Other big-time pledges include four-star offensive lineman John Turntine, four-star athlete Jermaine Bishop, four-star cornerback Samari Matthews and four-star defensive lineman Vodney Cleveland. Bell is the only one of those who hasn't committed since May; he committed last June. Kudos should be given to coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff for landing so much premium talent over the last few months. LSU football lands five-star Lamar Brown, beating Texas A&M for No. 1 recruit
LSU football secured a commitment from its top recruiting target on Thursday. Five-star defensive tackle Lamar Brown will stay home and play for the Tigers. Brown announced his commitment live on ESPN2 from University High in Baton Rouge. Brown is the top-ranked player in the state of Louisiana. Some rankings, including ESPN, slot Brown as the No. 1 overall recruit in the class. Brown is a two-way star on the high school field, but he's trending towards playing defense at the next level. Brown is the third five-star to commit to LSU in the 2026 cycle, joining defensive tackle Richard Anderson and wide receiver Tristen Keys. Brown's commitment was a legitimate mystery entering the day, but reports suggested the race was between LSU and Texas A&M. LSU and Texas A&M are used to battling for top prospects between Houston and New Orleans, but LSU won the battle here. It would have been a rough look if LSU lost Louisiana's top prospect to a conference rival. However, the battle isn't over.
