A ship ran aground in Norway and nearly crashed into a house. A crew member has been charged

(Jan Langhaug/NTB Scanpix via AP) OSLO, Norway — Norwegian prosecutors have charged a cargo ship's second officer with negligent navigation after he allegedly fell asleep on duty and the vessel ran aground, narrowly missing crashing into a home. The ship, the NCL Salten, ran aground shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday. No oil spills were reported, and none of the 16 people aboard was injured. Johan Helberg told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that he'd slept through the whole thing and only woke up when a neighbour started ringing his doorbell. Images show the ship's red and green bow just metres from Helberg's house along the Trondheim Fjord's coast. The second officer, whose name was not made public, was the navigator on duty at the time of the grounding, prosecutor Kjetil Bruland Sørensen said in a statement. Crews on Monday continued to take containers off the ship so it could be more easily removed from the area. NCL, the shipping company, said it was co-operating with investigators. Ship happens: Man awakes to find 443-foot cargo vessel ran aground in his backyard

When Johan Helberg said he wanted a waterfront view, he didn't expect the waterfront to come to him complete with a 443-foot cargo ship. Helberg awoke on Thursday to discover the massive bow of the NCL Salten resting a stone's throw from his home in Byneset, Norway, near Trondheim. The vessel had run aground in the early hours, narrowly missing Helberg's house by approximately 16 feet. Remarkably, Helberg said he slept through the entire incident. He was only alerted to his unexpected visitor when a concerned neighbor rang his doorbell. "I went to the window and was quite astonished to see a big ship," Helberg told The Guardian newspaper. "I had to bend my neck to see the top of it. It was so unreal." Authorities have determined that the ship's watch officer, a Ukrainian national in his 30s, fell asleep while on duty, leading to the vessel veering off course. The officer has been charged with negligent navigation. No injuries or oil spills were reported, but the incident did cause minor damage to a heating pump's wire on Helberg's property. And this isn't NCL Salten's first grounding. The ship previously ran aground in 2023, but managed to free itself without assistance. Efforts to refloat the ship during high tide on Thursday were unsuccessful. The Norwegian Coastal Administration is conducting geotechnical assessments before making another attempt. Shipping company NCL has stated it is cooperating with the investigation. As for Helberg, he remains in good spirits despite the unexpected intrusion. "It's a very bulky new neighbor, but it will soon go away," he quipped.

Man sleeps through massive container ship running aground on his front lawn

A Norwegian man managed to sleep through an enormous container ship running aground on his front lawn. Johan Helberg, who lives in Byneset, on the Trondheim Fjord, was woken by his neighbor on Thursday morning asking if he had noticed a boat outside, TV2 Norway reported. When he looked out his door, he saw a 135-meter-long (443-foot) container ship parked up in his front yard. 'If the ship had hit the rocky outcrop right next to it, it would have lifted up and hit the house hard. It only missed by a few meters,' Helberg told TV2. His neighbor, Jostein Jørgensen, who lives about 40 meters (131 feet) from the beach, told TV2 he was woken around 5 a.m. by the sound of a boat approaching. 'When I looked out the window, I saw a boat speeding toward the shore,' he told the local TV network, adding that he ran outside and shouted to raise the alarm. Jørgensen said the boat, the NCL Salten, got closer and closer until it ran aground about eight meters (26 feet) from the wall of his neighbor's house. 'He was lying asleep and surprised he had a visitor,' Jørgensen told TV2. The vessel was reportedly bound for Orkanger, at the southern end of the fjord, and had 16 people aboard when it ran aground. Bente Hetland, managing director of the shipping company NCL, called it a 'serious incident' and said the company was 'grateful that nobody was injured in the grounding.' 'At present time, we do not know what caused the incident and are awaiting the conclusion of the ongoing investigation by the relevant authorities,' Hetland said in a statement. 'We are currently assessing the damage to the ship.' A tugboat was initially sent to try to pull the vessel free, to no avail. On Thursday evening, a salvage company tried to mount an attempt to refloat the ship at high tide, but it was later decided it was not possible, the Norwegian Coastal Administration said in a statement. It said geotechnical investigations were now needed before another attempt could be made. While there have been no signs of oil leaking from the vessel, the authority said it had an oil response vessel on standby to respond, if needed.
