Detroit Tigers to place Kerry Carpenter on injured list with hamstring tightness
The Detroit Tigers will place Kerry Carpenter on the injured list for an aggravated hamstring, manager A.J. Hinch told MLB Network Radio on Tuesday morning. Hinch said Carpenter had an MRI on his right hamstring Monday, June 30, after he injured his hamstring against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, June 29. With Carpenter, a left-handed hitter, out of the lineup, the Tigers will recall infielder Trey Sweeney, also a lefty, after he was just sent to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, June 28. If it's the 10-day injured list for Carpenter, he could theoretically return July 11, but with All-Star break beginning Monday, July 14, it's possible the Tigers could keep Carpenter out of the lineup until Friday, July 18, when games resume. Hinch suggested the Tigers were being cautious even though the MRI didn't reveal significant damage. Carpenter has dealt with hamstring issues since early June and also was limited by it during the 2024 postseason. The Tigers slugger felt tightness in his hamstring in the fifth inning during the team's win against the Twins on Sunday. He was pulled from the game. He went 2-for-3, including a home run in the first inning, before he exited. MORE TIGERS NEWS: Detroit Tigers' Spencer Torkelson could come up short in MLB All-Star picks "It's really annoying," Carpenter told reporters Sunday. "But, man, everyone has been working hard on it. It's hard to put a finger on it, but we'll see how it goes from tonight on." Despite the hamstring issues, Carpenter is putting up another fine season toggling between the corner outfield spots and designated hitter. Despite a dip in batting average, slugging percentage and OPS, his power numbers are similar to last season. He has hit 16 home runs through 78 games; last season he hit 18 home runs in 87 total games. He'd been on an uptick the last five games, hitting three homers with six hits in 13 at-bats. Browns QB Kenny Pickett will be sidelined because of hamstring injury, AP source says
Cleveland Browns quarterback Kenny Pickett will be sidelined because of a hamstring injury. The injury is believed to have occurred during a red zone 11-on-11 drill late in Saturday's practice, a person with knowledge of the injury said Sunday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Browns were off on Sunday. Coach Kevin Stefanski is expected to address Pickett's status before Monday's practice. Pickett will be evaluated later in the week. The Browns have their first padded practice on Monday and go for three straight days until taking Thursday off and then practicing on Friday and Saturday. ESPN first reported the injury. Pickett is vying with Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders for the starting quarterback spot. Cleveland opens the season on Sept. 7 against Cincinnati. Pickett and Joe Flacco have received most of the snaps with the first team during the first four days of practice. Gabriel got some first-team reps while Sanders' just began getting some second-team work Friday and Saturday. After struggling early in the week, Pickett had his best practice on Saturday that included a couple of touchdown passes in red zone drills. The coaching staff likes Pickett's mobility and the ability to create plays on the run. 'Coaches are looking for the guy that's consistent, that's the same guy every day that they can count on. They can call any play and they know that we'll get them out of a bad play,' Pickett said on Thursday. 'If the shots called and it's not there, we'll check it down.' Pickett was acquired from Philadelphia in March. A 2022 first-round selection by Pittsburgh, Pickett has 25 career starts with 15 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. ___ AP NFL:

Astros GM Dana Brown says Isaac Paredes' injury is ‘more severe than we projected'
HOUSTON — The right hamstring strain suffered by Houston Astros All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes 'is a little bit more severe than we projected,' general manager Dana Brown said on Sunday afternoon, accentuating the team's need for more offense at Thursday's trade deadline. Brown said Paredes is seeking a second opinion and the team should know more about his prognosis within the week. Paredes has not been spotted at Daikin Park since he suffered the injury on July 19 against the Seattle Mariners. Advertisement 'It's tough to be optimistic when you know it's more severe,' Brown told the team's pregame radio show on Sunday. Paredes is one of a major-league high nine Astros position players currently on the injured list. Five of them, including Paredes, were in Houston's Opening Day lineup. Paredes has perhaps the most serious injury of that quintet. Brown's comments on Sunday must prompt serious concern whether Paredes will return this season — a reality that could alter Brown's approach as Thursday's trade deadline approaches. Earlier this week, Brown said the team is 'prioritizing the bats' while also remaining in the market for a starting pitcher. Acquiring both would be an ideal deadline, but Houston's lack of top-end prospect capital will make it difficult to win any bidding wars against other buyers. Few available players would be able to offset Paredes' absence. The pull-happy third baseman leads the Astros' lineup with 19 home runs and trails only injured shortstop Jeremy Peña for the team lead in both on-base percentage and slugging percentage. 'We're still looking for a left-handed bat, so that didn't change,' Brown told the team's pregame radio show on Sunday. 'If it's an infielder, great. If it's an outfielder, we'll take that as well. It really didn't change much, it's just more of a preference to be an infielder now.' Utilityman Mauricio Dubón has started six of the Astros' eight games at third base since Paredes' injury. Second base also remains in flux after Jose Altuve accepted a position change to left field this winter, though Brown has intimated the club could move Altuve back to second base if it acquires an outfielder at the deadline.

Vikings sideline Justin Jefferson with 'very mild' hamstring strain
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings will keep wide receiver Justin Jefferson off the field for awhile because of a mild strain of his left hamstring. Coach Kevin O'Connell said before practice on Friday that Jefferson would be re-evaluated next week. The two-time All-Pro, who has the most receiving yards in NFL history through a player's first five years, felt some tightness in his leg during the team's session on Thursday and cut short his participation as a precaution. The Vikings sent him for an MRI exam afterward. O'Connell described the injury as 'very mild' and said he had no concern about Jefferson being ready for the season opener at Chicago on Sept. 8, which is more than six weeks away. Still, considering his value to the team, the type of the injury and the demands of his position, Jefferson figures to miss more than just a few days of training camp practices. Jefferson suffered a significant strain of his right hamstring in 2023 that caused him to miss seven games. ___ AP NFL:
